Beware
Beware, they wrote down our credit card info and made unauthorized charges to TMobile prepaid web. We know it was them because that was the only place my husband used his card ad our credit card company said they typed the numbers in manually. This was the St. Maarten location. AWFUL, company...bunch of crooks.
Huge scam
Huge scam! Don't Book. Ads w/ cheap prices then at the rental spot they put on fees I've never heard of, demand high holds and are so robotic in responses to questioning it all!
I only usually leave good reviews BUT…
I only usually leave good reviews, BUT there’s not a good thing to say about this company. If your flight is delayed and you arrive 2 hours late, they will give your rental away and then it’s based on availability…. When you are traveling with 7 or more, they will find something “close” to working for you but raise the rates by TRIPLE!! Then I read the other reviews, and YEP!” Trust the 1 stars as they are accurate!
I wish I could use curse words to…
I wish I could use curse words to express the anger I have towards this agency. First of all, they NEVER answered the phone for us to be picked up at the airport. Finally, after 11pm someone decides to answer only to tell us they are closed. The next day, we Uber it to get our rental, only to find out they canceled it because we didn’t pick up the vehicle on the day it was supposed to be picked it up. No explanation after our experience, only it’s cancelled. No compassion, no trying to work with us, no nothing. Don’t rent from these people, and be aware, they also have numerous other rentals on the same street but same management .
This Car Rental place is a total scam…
This Car Rental place is a total scam my daughter did not read the reviews before booking please read the reviews stay far away from MEX CAR RENTAL these people are scammers; we are looking into getting a lawyer to see if we can stop this company from scamming people out of money and deposits.
They are a group of thieves!!!
They are a group of thieves!!!! Go to another car rental supplier. They obliged you to add a very expensive and “mandatory” insurance, otherwise they don’t give you the car.
Booking price 450 USD + “mandatory” insurance 900 USD = 1350 USD
Terrible rental, minus two stars
Terrible rental, took almost two hours to. Check out a car, had to prove we had car insurance, had to pay for toll fees,$75, when we discovered we needed to turn in the car early we had to pay an extra $80 dollars as they were not open at 5am, and we had to leave it at the airport. Do not use this car rental, the only reason I used it was because I used my miles from my credit card and this was the company associated with this car.
Sadly can't give minus scores.
Sadly can't give minus scores.
Nobody at the airport desk for over an hour, none of the helpline numbers were answered. TWO hours in a Q to get to the desk, 30 minutes to do the paperwork (which I had already booked) then another 40 minutes to wait for the car to be brought, damaged almost no fuel.
I had a email confirmation showing the price agreed with full insurance included. The girl behind the desk said it was from a comparison site and the cost would be over double. The staff were slow and uninterested. Shambles. Use a bigger maybe more expensive. But has a better reputation
Is it possible to give zero stars?

I booked a car on booking.com.
Paid for the car + insurrance.
When I came to pick up the car tvey wanted me to pay an extra $1500 for insurrance.
When they found out I paid with a debit card they refused to give me the car.
Never use this company!
This place is fine
I rented a car with Mex in Cancun, Having read the reviews, I was absolutely ready for a terrible experience, but decided to risk it for the price. The place was a little full, so it took us 30-40 min to get to the counter. After this, the agent understood and didn't push me on additional insurance since I am insured externally (they do take a deposit by blocking 1,500 usd from your credit card, which was returned fully). It took us less than 10 min to get everything signed and ready, including the purchase of an additional driver for my wife.
We got a decent car, they had to give us an SUV as they didn't have my category which was lower (free upgrade I guess). The car was clean and had gas on it, and the return was very easy. Honestly, I don't see why this company has such bad reviews. My experience was perfectly fine renting from them.
Mexc is a tourist trap scam.
As others have said, it's a tourist trap scam. They charge exorbitant rates for their insurance (my original price $200 for 8 days ended up costing me $1200 by the time they were done).
Even ignoring the scam policies, it took almost 2 hours to get our reserved car. The absolute worst car rental experience I've had on any continent.
Unfortunately I booked car from them…
Unfortunately I booked car from them before reading reviews :-(
But equipped with other people's feedback before pickup, we managed to film whole car from all possible angles (or we thought so...). I had my own insurance, they asked to buy theirs - which I refused, so they made me sign their form confirming that.
During pick up in Guadalajara downtown, they have carefully recorded all scratches in a form, ask us to take pictures, etc., so it looked like we are well prepared for return at the airport.
There staff tried to rip us off claiming we damaged spare tire. The tire was really old heavily used and bulging on one side - unusable in emergency. We were not shown the defect (it was impossible to find unless you got under the car), but it only took 15 seconds them to "discover" the problem on car return - clearly they have pulled this trick many times before (as mentioned 1000s times here). They were asking us to show them any picture on the tire to prove it wasn't us... I had to fill incident report for them to "check their system and decide if it was preexisting fault". With plane leaving soon, it wasn't easy conversation.
I was charged over £100 for replacement tyre on my credit card.
Never ever I would rent car from them again.
Poor customer service and my advice
Giving 2 stars for poor customer service (I was told that I am lucky to have a car because the couple behind me in the queue wouldn't have one because they don't have other cars.... SERIOUSLY ???!!) and no explanations on why I was charged 455 MXN after my rental. I sent an email but got no response.
There were other stuff which got solved : double payment cancelled, quick assistance to get a new car if you buy their insurance so it was not all bad for me, but they do have shady practices (see above) and they are not the greatest to give you explanations.
HOWEVER, do yourself a favour as a general rule:
- If you can, ALWAYS book through the car rental company website and don't get tricked by third party websites extras which don't exist for the car rental company ;
- You do NEED a CREDIT CARD to rent a car. Debit card is NOT allowed (hello Europe)
- Insist on using your credit card insurance if you are sure about it and if you are able to call your bank in your country (buy a specific sim card plan). Be ready to spend a higher deposit in that case (around 45000 MXN)
- Avoid this company if you can. If you are lucky, you'll get a car even with a reservation. If not, go to see Toura Cancun.
- Take A LOT of pictures. ALWAYS. PICTURES OF F***ING EVERYTHING. Car Dashboard with car engine ON/Indoor/Outdoor. Even if you look like a d*** pain in the ***, don't mind anybody, take your time and take ALL pictures you need at check-in AND check-out of ANY vehicle that you rent (even for a change of vehicle).
- Did I mention a sim card plan? Be able to call any mexican phone number + your bank in your country in case of emergency. Not just internet data. It was useful to me.
Bad Experience
First the car was a lower and smaller car than what I originally reserved. I reserved a Toyota Rav4 and I got a Kia Kick. Second the fuel is near empty when I got it and the first thing I have to do on my trip is find a nearby gas station. Finally, they charge me a $100 cleaning fee without telling me afterwards because we were in Florida and there are sand from the beach. Not transparent about it at all. They expect the customer to wash the car before returning?
Terrible scam and lack of respect for tourism
Cautiously a few days before the trip, I checked my reservations, and looked for the online reviews of this provider Mex Rent A Car, in which I found very worrying comments, especially that many people complained because when they arrived at the counter they were informed that their car had already been delivered to someone else because they only separated it by 40 minutes from the time of the reservation. So I called on December 16 on two occasions to the company Mex Rent A Car, to make sure that this was not going to happen to me since my flight arrived at 13:55 and not at 12:00 as it was in my reservation, both people confirmed that this was not a problem, it is more that I had 6 hours to pick up the vehicle, however, I still asked for my arrival to be updated to 15:00 to give me time to pick up my luggage and arrive at the company's premises. I was confident that it would be so and I would have no problem.
On December 25 we landed a little earlier than scheduled, waited for our bags and finally went to the Mex Rent A Car counter that is directly leaving through the immigration and customs door, where they told us to go out and look for a vehicle with their logo which would take us to the place of delivery of the vehicle. We left and quickly found the vehicle and were dropped off at the vehicle delivery offices (a dirt road place where everything gets dirty, suitcases, shoes, etc).
I introduced myself, and a lady decided to attend me and informed me that my vehicle was no longer available and that I would surely not want to pay the difference to get another one, I was truly surprised since as I explained before I had called and they confirmed that it would not be a problem, and also the lady who already seemed to be making decisions for me that I would not want to take another vehicle. I tried to reason with this lady, but she said that was their policy (policy not written anywhere where I rent or reserve the vehicle), I called the central where they simply could not do anything for me and I have no choice but to pay the difference ($500 extra) for a GWM brand TANK vehicle, which is a vehicle that did not meet my needs, a vehicle that to get on and on the elderly people who were traveling with me was very complicated, we had to buy a stool to use it as an extra step and also a vehicle with very high gas consumption.
Finally I finish my trip and return the vehicle much cleaner than what they gave it to me and very upset because they did not even thank me which led me to look for the PROFECO office at the airport of Mérida and put there an initial complaint, where I was informed that I could do this procedure and they explained my rights completely.
Do not rent from these thieves
Do not rent from these thieves! They advertise as being cheaper. They pull all these tactics out to charge you more money in the end. They charged us a cleaning fee for sand that was in the car stating that it takes them longer to vacuum. The car was a bucket to begin with. The car was rented for 2 weeks, of course it’s gonna be a little dirty. Then they sat and laughed about them screwing us. Paid over 900 US dollars for a small 2 door sedan. Shame on them all!
Don’t rent with this company!
We booked a car for Cancun airport through Mex Rent a Car’s own website. There was no prepayment option, and we received a confirmation with all details after booking and again the day before the booking stating that all was good. When we arrived, the personnel simply told us that no cars were available since we hadn’t prepaid. She just gave us the number for their service center and refused to answer any questions to us. She kept saying “no cars no cars”. We called their service center who just said the same and left us on hold for 30 min before hanging up on us. Absolutely terrible experience.
I reserved a car through Priceline for…
I reserved a car through Priceline for mex rent a car. I received a confirmation number and a number of emails confirming everything was set. When I arrived in Fort Lauderdale I was told “everything is down and no cars are available “ I tried calling mex rent a car but after being on hold for 45 minutes, they disconnected me. Getting through to Priceline wasn’t much better. I was forced to rent without a reservation and paid nearly 8X more than I was reserved for. If I could give mex rental car zero stars I would. I highly recommend never using this company. Same for Priceline
Dishonest deceptive company do not rent from them!
Requested full coverage and paid for CT insurance at Tulum airport. Was told everything except the vehicle interior was covered. Returned the car with spare installed (had a flat tire a day earlier), CT coverage online shows tires ARE included, but they charged an additional $205.53 for a tire claiming that CT only covered tires when the rental was done online. They allege that renting in the airpiort required additional LCA insurance. LCA was never offered or declined. This company is deceptive and dishonest in their practices. When dealing with customer service they provided a paper that supposedly showed declining the extra insurance coverage, however, that paper was fabricated by the returning rental IN agent and NOT written by the initial vehicle OUT rental agent. The assurance of full coverage was a lie, this company and its employees are dishonest scammers. Do yourself a favor, walk or take public transportation but do not rent a vehicle from Mex Rent a Car.
Terrible experience
I had an extremely disappointing and frustrating experience with this car rental company. They forced me to purchase additional insurance (SLI), claiming it was mandatory, even though I already had coverage through my credit card. Upon consulting with a lawyer, I discovered this was completely unlawful under Mexican consumer protection laws.
Furthermore, the deposit they charged was outrageous. The contract I booked through Expedia specified a deposit of $540 USD, yet I was forced to pay $1,500 USD. When I questioned this, the staff simply dismissed my concerns, saying that the terms on Expedia’s website were “wrong.”
Adding to the frustration, their location blocks access to the Expedia website, making it impossible to verify the terms of your booking on the spot. This seems intentional and highly unethical.
This company’s practices are deceptive and predatory, leaving customers no choice but to comply with their inflated charges or forfeit the booking. I strongly discourage anyone from using their services. If you value transparency and fair treatment, look elsewhere.
