Mullvad VPN

Following the introduction of the Online Safety Act I decided to use the Mullvad VPN (virtual private network) app to circumvent identity and age checks. It works seamlessly with my system (Microsoft Windows 11 Professional) with only a slight but unnoticeable reduction in speed. By spoofing my location to other countries I am also able to access content which would otherwise be blocked for those in the United Kingdom. I am so pleased with it I have renewed it for a further 6 months (using an anonymous voucher bought off Amazon).

If privacy is an issue then be aware their headquarters in Sweden were recently raided by the police but they were unable to gain any information, confirming Mullvad do not keep any records or logs of their customers' online use.

Mullvad VPN breaks Windows Internet Connection

I subscribed to Mullvad because of its strong privacy reputation, but the software caused deep system‑level problems on my Windows 11 PC. The Mullvad tray icon stopped responding to right‑clicks, and even after extensive troubleshooting—including reinstalling Mullvad, creating a new Windows user profile, running SFC/DISM, and performing a full in‑place Windows repair—the issue persisted.

The most alarming discovery was that Safe Mode with Networking had no internet connection unless Mullvad was uninstalled. That means Mullvad’s drivers or services were interfering with Windows at a very low level. Once I removed Mullvad, Safe Mode networking immediately worked again.

I contacted Mullvad about the issue, but they refused to refund the remaining subscription, citing a strict 14‑day refund policy. For a company that markets itself as user‑friendly and trustworthy, this rigid stance is disappointing and short‑sighted.

I’ve now removed Mullvad from my system entirely. A VPN should never break core Windows functionality, and when it does, the company should stand behind its product instead of hiding behind a narrow refund window.

After I published the initial version of this review Mullvad did refund my last payment. This is to its credit. However, the customer should not have to go through a lengthy unpleasant experience and to publish a review on TrustPilot in order to get his money back when a product breaks his Internet connection. Mullvad would do itself a service to revamp its refund policy to at least a 30-day refund no questions asked. And it would also do well to take its VPN back to the drawing board.
