In early 2024, we had two prints and a wedding bouquet reframed by The Art Room. The framer amenable to our needs and the items were soon returned to us. Shortly thereafter, we noticed the side panels of the bouquet appeared to be contracting inwards and returned on two occasions for corrective action to be taken. In June, we noticed that the top lining of the bouquet box seemed to be collapsing. We were reluctant to return to The Art Room at this point, but the framer advised us that he would apply a more substantial solution as earlier attempts had failed.
After 2 weeks, we enquired about the status of the repair, only to be told that work had not yet started on it had been exceptionally busy. We found this frustrating as no one had made contact to advise us of a significant delay. We felt that as a customer with a fault, it would have either been prioritised or at the very least its status regularly updated to us.
By now, we had lost confidence and sought a full refund. We were advised by the business owner that the job had been "vastly" underquoted and should have been "at least double" what we paid. Since no one from the team had made mention of this supposed 'underquote' at any point, it seemed oddly convenient that only now was it being brought up. He rendered no apology for the delay, but did agree to issue a full refund.
When my husband visited The Art Room to collect the bouquet, he was shocked to find that the entire frame, mounting box - even the backing panel on which the bouquet was attached - had been removed, and the entire bouquet dumped in a cardboard box, wrapped in bubblewrap. As any framer should know, bubblewrap placed over extremely fragile preserved flowers carries acute potential for damage.
The framer (who had invited the business owner along) advised my husband that the frame and mounting box "was The Art Room's property" and as such had been removed, implying distrust that we might not otherwise return it. My husband asked if The Art Room had notified me of this intention, to which the framer replied nonchalantly with words to the effect of "no idea". Whilst we totally accept that the frame is indeed The Art Room's property, we believe a more reasonable approach (due to the extreme fragility of the bouquet) would have been to return the product to us, allowing us to go elsewhere and have the frame removed and replaced. At the very least, they could have left the bouquet on its backing panel to afford it some structural support. We would then happily have returned the original frame to The Art Room. It’s worth noting that the bouquet was taken to the art room in it’s original box frame and this was not returned to us!
Through the process, the framer exhibited an undertone of what we can only describe as 'passive defensiveness' in his manner. Everytime an issue arose, the framer would always have ready excuses as to 'why' the issue was not his fault: it was the environment, or the effect of being mounted on an external wall, or we'd chosen the wrong thickness of frame, or something else. He'd ask us to check everything he'd done in minute detail, always going out of his way to make us aware that "I didn't do that" or "That wasn't me". This passive defensiveness set us on edge and made us wonder why he felt the need to do this. It is also important to stress that all of the items had hung on the same walls in our house for over 15 years, with no issues whatsoever.
The framer knew the bouquet was extremely fragile and of great sentimental worth to us, yet at the end when we wanted our money back, he chose to return it to us in a cardboard box. He did not show my husband that it was in a cardboard box until he had his boss with him. That spoke volumes: he clearly knew that he had disrespected a customer's property and that it was the wrong thing to do. The Art Room chose to remove the frame and dumped the bouquet in the cardboard box BEFORE a full refund was provided. It was only when we advised them that unless a refund was made, we would be contacting Trading Standards that a refund magically appeared.

There was no rush, we were given as much time as we needed to make our decision on frame/mount combination. They gave good advice for the colour and type of frame that worked best with our pictures. And the price was where expected it to be.
Excellent work, great service. We are very happy with the frames on our pictures and the advice given to us. Would definitely recommend
