Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 109 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Consumers frequently complain about unhelpful customer support teams, excessively long telephone waiting times, and severe difficulties when trying to access their own funds or manage accounts online. Many people also experienced frustrating payment issues, unexpected account restrictions, and sudden financial charges resulting from rigid system limitations and poor communication. Some reviewers were happy with specific staff members who provided patient, polite, and exceptionally efficient assistance during their visits to local branches. A few customers deeply appreciated the friendly and dedicated support they received when navigating complex personal banking matters with capable employees.

On the 14th of November I visited the Newton Abbot branch to activate the LPA that has been put in place for my wife who now has Dementia. Having already processed access with two other financial institutions, I did not expect any problems. My time is now very restricted due the difficulty of spending time away from home. Just after lunch I was asked to wait. After 40 minutes and being ignored by members of staff seemingly absorbed by their computers I had to leave. No one expressed any concern.
Last Thursday, visited the Dawlish banking hub. The guy there was helpful, but did not have the necessary equipment to scan my LPA documents, so could not help
If this bank has now restricted access to only a few major branches it would be useful there was someone available and interested.
After how I was treated I am not visiting Newton Abbot branch again. It’s got to be Exeter, but without a relative living near I cannot be away for long enough

How Alphacom Business Systems Limited attempted to access NatWest online banking

After nearly 40 years of banking with NatWest, without any alteration of company officers, it has been impossible to set up on-line banking as "the signatures do not match our records" Our latest statements have not been delivered to our registered office and our account blocked.
When requesting, by telephone, how this can be rectified we were advised to visit a branch yet the branch does not deal with businesses and suggested telephoning again.
Round we go again in a vicious circle with no apparent way to resolve the matter, receive our missing statements nor set up on-line banking.
Why would anyone wish to deal with this bank?

Fraud team as much use as a chocolate firegaurd.

Having banked with Nat West for over 30 years I was hit by a scammer trying to take £49.00.

The bank identified it and then when I got through to the fraud team they said I needed to contact the fraudster and deal with them before they would unlock my card.

Perhaps they live in a world where scammers are helpful and respond to emails saying 'oi, stop scamming me you *****'.

Next stop transferring my business to another bank, utterly useless, imagine you were abroad, didn't have any cash at hand you'd be utterly in the sh*t.

Do NOT use switching service!!!!

Forget the bonus. With no consent or approval or confirmation in writing they will EMPTY your previous bank account! When you call, their customer service centre (if you can get through, without being diverted to an online solution totally unfit for your problem) are terrible! When I asked where it was confirmed to me in writing (spoiler: it wasn’t) that my old Lloyds account would be emptied I was told they don’t need to as I should have known?! Going into branch first thing to close my account and crawl back to Lloyds and kiss them. I was tempted by the £180 joining bonus and am paying the price. Do NOT switch!!!

Customer service

I have been a customer of this bank exclusively since I was 17 years old ( I am now a month from being 65 years old so nearing 50 years). I have never had experience of a plummeting customer service experience. I have been trying to collect my rewards which are not a small amount by my standard but have been given the telephone experience run around that is in my opinion beyond belief. I made 7 phone calls to customer service yesterday only to be cut off 7 times because I could not provide telephone pin (I have never done telephone banking) I was then referred to online banking ( again I have never and will never do this). I travelled to my branch to be advised they could not help me as they have to go through the same telephone number for customer services as me. I have made a formal complaint. Today I have had to circumnaviste the same system but refused to answer their automated questions which meant I had to hang on the phone for 49 minutes before a could talk to an actual customer service representative. He was unable to help me but did put me through to the rewards team who picked up immediately. I explained that I wanted to redeam more than a 100 pounds worth of points before my holiday only to be asked if I had already redeemed them. I once again explained that I do not do telephone or online banking so was unable to do this myself. Once she understood the problem the customer service agent advised me they would be in my account within 3- 4 days. Whilst I was physically in my local branch I was aware of at least 3 customers who were being advised that the local branch could not help with their enquiries/ problems such as duplicate direct debits being taken and that again they would have to contact customer services themselves by phone !!!. Am I correct in thinking that this bank wants us to withdraw our savings etc so they can concentrate on more on customers who are prepared to pay for their accounts whilst the bank itself saves money by not having representatives on hand to help. I also pay for my account and I should at least be able to at least expect a minimum level of service.
I will let my formal complaint continue and will then contact the financial ombudsman. In the meantime if anyone from the complaints department at NatWest bothers to check the appalling reviews they are receiving about the banks customer services experiences perhaps they should consider flagging them the the person in charge of complaints about NatWest. In my opinion they really need to be aware of this! Unless they really don't want to know or care less

Get What You Pay For Free Banking CRAP service

Nat West are running a offer for business banking which offers switching in 7 days and Free of charges for 2 years.
What they don't tell you is it takes weeks to open an account and even then you can't use it. This is because you then need a card reader to set up any payments which you only find out after they have taken days to send you a number of codes to set up Internet Banking. Then you have to complete another switching request as though it was the first time you had asked (you state you want to switch when you apply although they have probably forgotten as its so long ago. They also don't tell you that when your new account is set up you don't get fere banking until they complete the switch, which I guess is no problem as you cannot use it without the card reader. The you find that they sent you an electronic switching form which requires access automatically to other apps on your computer to automatically send the form, which only a moron with no knowledge of Cyber Security would do. What a croc. If I ran my business that way I would be broke ... oh wait I am broke cos I cannot use the account they have set up !

As a Nat West customer of 40 odd years I am very disappointed at the AI systems now in place instead of homo sapiens.
I tried to apply for a credit card recently and you have to jump through hoops to get through the application system and the photo id verification was just rubbish.
I gave up the will to live in the end and will go elsewhere .
Would not recommend them to anyone

It is impossible to speak to a human being. I have spent almost an hour going around and around in circles with a robot, which just keeps asking the same questions. This is infuriating. Whatever happened to employing people?

What a disgusting bank

What a disgusting bank. I recently had cause to submit an LPA (Lasting Power of attorney) to NAT West to take care of my father's affairs etc. Not only was it rejected with no reasons but Thier exact words were "unfortunately we can't add you". I and my poor mum were both de banked by them about 7-8yrs ago again not a single reason given as to why!!.... and we both pulled our hair out trying to think of reasons as to why but couldn't. My father continued to bank with them even though we all said he should move his funds to another bank but he's a creature of habit. Now he's unable to get to the bank and totally bed bound and now suffering even more anxiety and becoming extremely emotional as he thinks the bank is trying to steal his money which is a considerable amount.
AVOID NAT WEST AT ALL COSTS especially if you have an LPA and would need to use it at some point. MOVE TO ANOTHER BANK BEFORE ITS TOO LATE

Unacceptable response time but good aftercare

MY card has been suspended due to a suspicious activity and I have now been on the line for nearly 30 minutes and I still haven't got through. This is at 08:30 am. One assumes that some kind of urgency exists on a fraud enquiry. I am now going to upgrade my comments because after evetually getting through they were very good and had picked out a suspicious transaction where I had unwttingly subscribed to a monthly membership while making a prchase, this has now been cancelled.

Online support is utterly terrible

The chat bot function is so limited as to be useless. If you get to chat with a human they are running many threads at once so take ages to respond. Meanwhile you get timed out of the site. Even then the respondent doesn't seem to understand the problem, or simply can't do anything.

I am trying to get a scam payment stopped before it leaves my account. I've been trying for hours today and yesteday - useless. Phone calls are better, although call centre lines are noisy and difficult to understand. Even then call centre reps seem to have limited ability to help.
Ridiculous and very poor set up for such a huge business like Nat West.

I recently switched to Natwest bank

I recently switched to Natwest bank to get the £200 switch incentive. I was impressed by the online and mobile phone app which were clear and straightforward to use. What a shame I did the switch as compensation to the way Natwest treated my family in 2002 when they lost the court of protection document in respect of my late father. Needless to say the whole family (several generations of Natwest bankers) then closed our Natwest current accounts. As soon as I received the £200 in August this year I switched to another bank.
I would be interested to know if Natwest have since discovered that lost document? It was handed in to the St Johns, Worcester branch. The chap there had never seen one before so said he would send it to the main branch in Worcester - it was never seen again! Perhaps it has fallen down the back of a filing cabinet? Please NatWest, have a look - the stunt woman who applied for a job in the 70's recently received her letter back as it was found that way.
The chap in the St Johns branch knew my father and would always ask after him. I do not blame the St Johns Branch, and he was adamant that he had forwarded it. When I complained to my telephone banking account at the time, Natwest did not seem to care about the stress the whole family were going through. The chap (I forget his name) did say that he would chase it up but I never heard from him or anyone else from Natwest again.

Don't rely on these people

My salary paid by my French employer has been held for 6 days by Natwest fraud dept. They haven't informed me, asked any questions nor given any timeframe for completing their investigations. This despite the payments over 5 years have all been ok - with some being more than double the payment they have stopped. What lovely people....NOT !

They've just released my money with no word of apology or explanation. What charmers...,

How irresponsible and difficult they are.

I am now finding this bank very irresponsible! They didn't let me know that my credit card had gone over its limit, and now have left me with a poor credit score without my knowledge!! They are also being very difficult about cancelling direct debit which I don't want and cannot afford.
Also in the past few years ago they kept allowing an obvious scamming group to keep taking all of my money, and when I tried telling them, they temporarily put my money back, and then threatened to return it back to the scammers called 'Padre', so then I had to immediately find another Bank to put all my money in, to prevent this! How can they not realise this, they should do as I ask, it's my money! How difficult they are and irresponsible!!

Frustrating Experience with Cheque Payment Handling

I recently received a cheque made payable to my business name and tried to pay it in through the NatWest app. After encountering some issues, I contacted customer service via the app and phone. After a long wait, both advisors assured me the cheque would not be processed and advised me to request a new cheque from my client.

I went out of my way to collect a new cheque and paid it in, only to find out that the original cheque had in fact gone through, resulting in a double payment. Now I’m left with the inconvenience of sending a refund to my client, all because of poor advice from NatWest.

This has been a frustrating and unnecessary hassle, costing me time and causing confusion for my client. Better communication and service would have avoided this mess entirely. Disappointed with how this was handled.
