Despicable and dishonest practices
I was having trouble installing my new Brother Printer and googled the Brother Website. I somehow got redirected to the Netrix NZ website (my fault for not checking the URL ).
I entered my details and then tried to install the Printer driver and got an error message. Simultaneously I get a call from someone called James who said he was from Brother and had identified a problem with my computer and could rectify the driver problem if I gave him access to my computer.
I was very cautious and asked how could he prove he was from Brother. He said he could give me his employee ID and I could call him back on their helpdesk number; he was very persitent.
I said I would try and resolve the problem myself and then did some checking.
It was then I realised that the website was not Brother and neither was the Helpdesk Number the same as the Brother phone number.
When I got on the Brother website I was able to resolve the install problem.
In the middle of the Install James called me back and I challenged him about who he really worked for and why his phone number was coming up as suspected SPAM
He still maintained that he was a Brother Employee and wouldn't back down, offering to send a Technican to my House.
I then said if he did I would call the police.
In the end I hung up on him as he had no shame at all.
The encounter and brazenness of James left me shaking. They seem the be a legit company, who prey on people who use Google like I did to get support and behave in a dishonest despicable way.
Please do not deal with these people, I shudder to think what may have happened if I had been foolish enough to give them access to my PC.
I am naturally suspicious and have an IT background, but they almost fooled me
