Night Zookeeper
Fantastically Fun Learning
Night Zookeeper is a London-based children’s brand comprising of an online learning program, a book series and a TV mini-series. All of our products centre around the magical world of the “Night Zoo”. Our aim is to make learning fantastically fun for children aged 6 to 12 years old, and unlock their creativity in the process. Our reading and writing program has been used by over 1 million children worldwide.
Night Zookeeper was founded in 2012 by Joshua Davidson and Paul Hutson. Our e-learning product was originally launched in November 2012 as a creative drawing iOS app for kids, which went on to be recognised as one of the 50 best apps of 2013 by The Observer and The Guardian.
In 2014, we revamped the app into a web version which included more extensive writing elements, a dashboard for monitoring progress and personalised feedback from tutors. Over 1 billion words have been written by children on the site. Night Zookeeper is also used in schools by teachers worldwide in an effort to harness the power of digital learning in the classroom.
Throughout the pandemic, Night Zookeeper was able to act as a useful resource for families around the world to keep their children learning as schools were forced to close and remote learning took hold.
As of 2024, our program is used by thousands of children in several countries as a way to improve their reading and writing skills in a fantastically fun way, whether as part of a homeschool, in the classroom, as a supplementary resource, or simply a productive form of screen-time.

I paid for several items on their site as I was impressed with their reading comprehension packages. After payment another screen showing I paid indicating I had 7 days to download my digital purchases but no information on the physical copies. The receipt did not show my itemized purchases as receipts typically do. It only showed the 3 items I bought. I recieved no information for shipping. I don't even know when or if I will actually recieve the physical copies I purchased. So I checked my email as all business send a confirmation email. Again, it only showed that I paid for 3 items but, it did not list the price of them, tax, or any shipping information. I emailed immediately all 3 available customer service, support, and sales emails and no one responded. They are based in the UK according to online. So I even waited until 1am USA time and emailed, I still did not receive a response. I need someone to contact me ASAP as this is a time sensitive issue.
Update October 24. 2025 I was told "We completely understand, and we have gone ahead and refunded you $***.**. Please allow up to 10 days for the bank to process this" Today is November 7. 2025 ten business days later. Monday Nov 10. 2025 I will update my review depending on if the company was being honest.
UPDATE Nov 11. 2025: The company emailed me confirming that they issued the refund, and I truly appreciate them for resolving the issue. Because of this, I’ve decided to update my review and focus only on the product itself.
I received a free copy of Book 1 after ending my free trial, and I’ve been using it with my child. I really like that each chapter includes worksheets that’s a great feature. However, I don’t like how large the writing lines are for the written answers and the story paragraph page. The lines seem more appropriate for kindergarten age children.
As a homeschool parent, I’d prefer lines that are closer together or traditional handwriting lines, as they help children write more neatly. I also think the story page could be improved by including more guided questions to help the child plan their writing such as identifying the main idea, adding supporting details, and forming a clear conclusion.

Night Zookeeper is a great compliment to what my daughters are taught in elementary school, grades 6 and 4. The site marries guidelines/prompts with freedom to explore and expand their creativity.

Night Zookeeper has been such a wonderful tool for helping my child build confidence with reading and grammar. The stories are imaginative and engaging, and the creative writing challenges make learning feel like play rather than work.

Affordable app for kids that really don't enjoy language arts. It puts the work into a fun, game like experience.

My older child really enjoys using Night Zookeeper as part of her at home learning. I have appreciated how she went from very uninterested in school work, to excited to play the games and write her stories. Night zookeeper breaks the writing down into steps so it all feels very manageable to the student. But then they get to see it all put together. They can read other student's writing as well and be inspired. The program is bright and fun to use. I subtract 1 star because of the parent dashboard. I have spent a lot of time exploring it and trying to figure things out. I wish that I could set goals for my student or see how much work they have done in a certain period of time. As I said, I have an older child and she doesn't like me to sit by her and manage every bit of her schooling. It is hard to determine if the work that she completed in a day or in a week is sufficient for our at home learning goals. Even if she sets a timer and tells me she is working on it- she could be spending the entire time in the drawing section and not actually working. So without me physically sitting next to her and watching what she is doing, it is hard for me to gauge. For that reason, Night Zookeeper is a fun supplement language arts program, and not something I will use as a primary program for homeschool.

My child really likes this platform. They didn't like English subject or anything to do with writing, but he really seems to be enjoying it so that's a win. I am glad I came across this app and tried it out. I don't mind paying for apps that he actually uses and where they can learn. They are homeschooled so I would recommend it to homeschooling families but also anyone wanting to help their children learn while having fun. Because learning should be fun otherwise how can they learn?! We've bene using it for a few months now.

My grandson can work at his own ability level. And the feedback is a great feature.

My son really enjoy Night Zookeeper. He found new enthusiasm in creative writing . My hope is for him to continue growing in his writing skills but most of all he enjoys the learning process

My children enjoy this program. They especially love creating their own characters, and getting to look at what other kids are creating as well. I give 4 stars because my children still stay away from writing up a whole story, and that is what I would like them to get used to, and become more comfortable doing.

We just finished our first week with Night Zookeeper. My son loves the games and creating his animals. We've tried several platforms for helping with reading comprehension. This is the first one he hasn't fought.

My child has borderline dysgraphia which has made literacy (particularly writing and grammar) a real struggle. He would get extremely anxious at school when given a writing assignment. We've been using Night Zookeeper for 2 weeks and the difference is astonishing. His interest in writing has dramatically increased and he now asks me for more time since we only spend 30 minutes on grammar and writing per day. Now he'll easily stay on for an hour and not want to stop.
I'm still working on how to structure it as a full curriculum for ELA - but getting there. It's more like a sandbox than a structured curriculum, but that's likely what kids who are not linear thinkers like about it!

Night Zookeeper has made my second grader a more confident writer! He has an active imagination and is always making up stories and adventures in his mind, but when it comes to writing his ideas down, he would get frustrated because he could not write as fast as he could think.
Night Zookeeper's gentle prompts and constant encouragement has helped him overcome his writer's block and he now thinks writing is fun! Within 2 days of working through Night Zookeeper, when it is time to do his writing homework, he picks up the pencil and writes freely with ease.
My son also is starting to enjoy spelling more. Instead of being afraid of getting spelling wrong in a word, he enjoys taking his time and learning how words are built. He is no longer afraid of making mistakes. The constant positive feedback in the Night Zookeeper platform has drastically boosted his writing confidence. He enjoys writing every day, which is making my heart soar with joy and relief!
