It all started with a song. In about 2013 I wrote a song - The Everything Goes Back To Normal Button. To support its release, and because it seemed like fun, I thought I'd built 50 real Everything Goes Back To Normal Buttons as merch. One button was given away on each night of the tour to whoever seemed to need it most. They sold out so quickly, and I've been asked about them so many times, I figured it was time to making more. So in 2026, Normal Buttons was born. Since then we've added a Pro model, made within an incredibly beautiful shiny enclosure. These buttons are endlessly fascinating to me. On one level, they’re completely useless. Just a metal box with a button that says Everything goes back to normal. Press it and nothing happens. A novelty. But on another, the whole thing feels imbued with some sort of mystic power to me. Press it, and all kinds of things happen. You lot have been asking me to make more of these for 13 years. There must be a reason right? I think the action of pressing connects with the ten million other times in our lives when we press a button and the thing we expect to happen, happens. The door opens. The microwave beeps. The keyboard types. This button piggy-backs on all those memories. Such a familiar object with such an unfamiliar message hijacks the brain for a moment, causing “Wait, what?” befuddlement. It must work. It’s got a button. Even with absent electronics it seems to hold some magical potential. Fun, serious, nothing, everything… what even is normal? I don’t know. It’s almost like a song, no inherent function or value and yet meaningful somehow, at least to people who are into that kind of music.See more
