Unexplained change of itinerary

We booked 3 days of West Highland hiking holidays via Orbis Way for late April 2025. During the initial inquiry four months before the trip, the representative was friendly and nice and answered all the questions in the investigation. Finally, we agreed and confirmed the itinerary, including quotation and hotel selections. We also paid a 20% deposit. However, two months later, the final itinerary altered all the hotels. The hotels were opposite our hiking destination for two nights, and we had to take the taxi back and forth; one day is 18 miles one way, which is highly inconvenient, time-consuming, and costly. They agreed to compensate us for the taxi but never provided an explanation for the change of hotels, despite my constant inquiries. It was very disappointing and frustrating!

Hi Min Rao,

Nice to greet you again.

We are really sorry that the organization of your trip did not turn out to be as desired.

We gave you a solution with 400 GBP so that you could arrange private taxis for your transfers, instead of taking public transport.

We are really sorry to hear, that even do you agreed to this solution, in reality you were not, and preferred to put us a bad review.

We always try to give all clients a solution when inconvinients happen or cancel the trip so that you can make your own arrangments.

We are really sorry for any inconvinients and hope you had a wonderfull West Highland Trails.

Best regards,

Worst Travel Experience Ever - DO NOT USE ORBIS!!

There were so many things that went wrong with this booking from beginning to end. I booked my West Highland Way solo hiking trip with Orbis Ways, thinking that, as a solo female traveler from the U.S., I would prefer having a travel company handle all logistics for me. In addition, I believed it would give me some peace of mind knowing that I'd have an on-the-ground travel company that I could call in case of emergency. WRONG!

Let's start from day one: When I arrived at Milngravie, I tried to check in at my hotel only to learn that my booking had never been paid for by Orbis. I called, the hotel called. We waited several hours before the hotel finally got through and managed to receive payment from Orbis for my room. (Later, when I complained about this to Orbis, Carmen from Orbis made an excuse stating that the hotel lost the reservation, but this wasn't the case. The hotel told me that they frequently had this problem with Orbis.) When I arrived at Tyndrum, I was told that I was to arrange for taxi service to get to my hotel. Carmen assured me before I left for my trip that the Taxis were plentiful in Tyndrum and that I would have no trouble booking a car to take me from the trail to the hotel. Again, wrong!! First off, there is often no internet service on or near the hiking trails. When I arrived at my stop, there was no phone service so no ability for me to call a taxi. A fellow hiker made a call for me, only to learn that the taxi company recommended by Orbis wasn't available to take me to my hotel. In the end, I had to hitch a ride with other hikers to get to my lodging. The worst experience occurred when hiking to Kinghouse. According to my itinerary, I was to hike to Kinghouse and then hop on a bus to get to my Air BnB located in Ballachullish - close to 45 miles away!!! I stood by the side of the road for close to an hour waiting for a bus that never arrived. I asked a few passers-by who later informed me that the bus was not due in for another few hours. By this time, I was out of food and water and furious with Orbis for their lack of planning and oversight. Once again, there was no phone service to be had in that remote part of the country so I walked an additional 1.5 miles to the Kinghouse hotel. The hotel desk clerk informed me that it would be nearly impossible for me to find a taxi or private car to take me all the way to Ballachullish at that time of day. All cars were either booked or taxi drivers were finished for the evening. It was only through her efforts that she managed to contact a driver who was willing to take one last rider for the hour-long ride to my AirBnB. I paid out of pocket over $120 US for the round trip taxi ride from Kinghouse to my boarding house and back - for which Orbis has yet to reimburse me.

At several hotel stops along the way, hotel and inn keepers complained about Orbis Ways, stating that they no longer wanted do business with the company because they frequently didn't get paid by Orbis. Or, they said that travelers would show up for their reservations only to learn that Orbis had never paid the hotel or completed the reservation. This was certainly my experience at a couple of locations. I made my West Highland Way Trip reservation during the Spring for a trip to occur in the Fall. I was told by Orbis that all of my rooms were booked and was given a list of the Inns where I'd be staying along the route. The Inns and Air BnB's looked spectacular! However, I pushed Carmen from Orbis repeatedly throughout the summer for confirmation from each hotel of all of my reservations so I was assured that all Inns and Air BnB's were solidly booked and there would be no issue once I arrived in each town. She assured me that the reservations were confirmed and that a detailed confirmation would be forwarded to me one month before my travel date. I received the itinerary, with reservations and photos to match, but the actual rooms I stayed in were nothing like the photos. In many cases I stayed in makeshift trailers or hostel-like accommodations BEHIND the beautiful inns or hotels shown in the photos sent to me. It was like a bad joke. Some of my rooms had no hot water; a couple offered no breakfast; most had no bath tubs (a necessity after long hiking days). When I spoke to the innkeepers about my rooms or asked why my room could not be upgraded, they explained that Orbis had made my reservation just a few weeks before and all of the better rooms had already been taken. I was outraged given that I had been encouraged to book my trip months ahead of time in order secure decent rooms. Instead, I paid top dollar for, in some cases, below standard accommodations.

While I'm sure Orbis does a better job booking tours in Spain and Portugal, the part of the country in which this country is based, they have no business booking travel tours in the UK - and particular not for solo, self-guided travelers.

The Camino de Santiago from Sarria to Santiago is an extraordinary journey that perfectly captures the essence of the pilgrimage. Starting from Sarria is ideal, as this route offers the minimum 100 kilometers needed to receive the Compostela certificate, which holds special significance for pilgrims. The scenery is stunning, with lush forests, charming villages, and the iconic Galician countryside along the way, providing a serene and inspiring atmosphere.

One of the highlights is the camaraderie shared with fellow pilgrims from around the world, creating a sense of community and shared purpose. The path is well-marked and manageable for most fitness levels, with many welcoming albergues (hostels) and local restaurants that offer hearty meals, including traditional Galician dishes.

Reaching the Santiago Cathedral is a profoundly emotional experience, bringing a sense of accomplishment and reflection that many describe as life-changing. The journey from Sarria allows for a balanced mix of physical challenge, cultural immersion, and spiritual growth. It’s a truly unforgettable experience and highly recommended for anyone seeking adventure, peace, or personal reflection.

Our agent, Carmen G, was excellent in putting a package together and making the arrangements, which all worked like clockwork. When two friends later decided to join us on our Camino, Carmen liaised with the agent they were dealing with to ensure that our itineraries matched and that we were accommodated together wherever possible.

Starting the Camino de Santiago from Ferrol along the Camino Inglés is an exceptional journey, offering a quieter yet equally inspiring path to Santiago de Compostela. This route is ideal for those seeking a more reflective and less crowded experience. Beginning from the coastal city of Ferrol, the Camino Inglés spans about 120 kilometers, providing the minimum distance needed to receive the Compostela certificate.

The journey is filled with stunning Galician scenery—lush forests, rolling green hills, and charming coastal views that create a refreshing backdrop for the pilgrimage. The route is well-marked, and the stages are manageable, making it accessible for various fitness levels. Along the way, pilgrims encounter quaint villages and friendly locals, and can enjoy traditional Galician cuisine, such as empanadas, pulpo a la gallega (Galician-style octopus), and fresh seafood, which adds a unique cultural layer to the experience.

Hiking the Rota Vicentina in Portugal is an incredible experience that combines stunning coastal scenery with rich local culture. This long-distance trail stretches along the southwestern coast, offering two main routes: the Historical Way and the Fishermen’s Trail. Both routes provide hikers with diverse landscapes, from dramatic cliffs and unspoiled beaches to peaceful forests and quaint villages, showcasing the natural beauty of the Alentejo and Algarve regions.

The Fishermen’s Trail, which follows the coastline, is especially breathtaking. Every turn reveals a new view of the Atlantic Ocean, with vibrant turquoise waters and sandy coves. The Historical Way, slightly inland, winds through small towns and fields, allowing hikers to experience traditional Portuguese life, including local cuisine and the warm hospitality of the locals.

The trail is well-marked and accessible, with paths suited to various fitness levels, making it enjoyable for both experienced hikers and beginners. There are numerous accommodations along the way, from cozy guesthouses to more traditional inns, and each night can end with a taste of the region’s delicious seafood dishes.

The company always responded efficiently to our queries. The literature supplied was helpful. We got what we were promised on paper. No surprises along the way,

Save for one substandard accommodation, the quality of the services supplied on the ground were up to standard.

Hi Carmel,

Thank you for trusting Orbis Ways!

Hiking the West Highland Way is a breathtaking adventure and one of Scotland’s most iconic long-distance trails. Stretching 96 miles from Milngavie near Glasgow to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, this trail offers hikers an unforgettable journey through some of Scotland’s most spectacular landscapes.

The trail is well-marked and accessible for hikers of varying abilities, with a range of terrains—from gentle paths through rolling hills to more challenging sections around Loch Lomond and the rugged Rannoch Moor. Each day brings a new view, from serene lochs and lush forests to majestic mountain vistas, making the journey both varied and visually stunning.

The West Highland Way also provides a fantastic balance of solitude and camaraderie. Hikers can enjoy peaceful moments surrounded by nature and the occasional encounter with fellow walkers, sharing stories and experiences. Along the way, there are plenty of cozy inns and guesthouses where hikers can rest and sample hearty Scottish food, such as haggis, hearty stews, and fresh local fish.

Finishing in Fort William, with Ben Nevis towering above, is a truly rewarding experience, giving hikers a profound sense of accomplishment. The West Highland Way is perfect for those seeking adventure, natural beauty, and a true taste of Scotland’s wilderness. It’s a highly recommended trail that leaves a lasting impression on all who walk it.

Sadly our experience has not been good

Sadly our experience has not been good. Quote for our walk included 5/4 star hotels. All our hotels have been down graded to 1/3 star hotels. Hotel stops not evenly spaced last two days a 12km walk then a 30km. Original quote had evenly spaced night/hotel stops. This is not what you would expect I would advise do not use them better booking trip yourself!

Hello Rebecca, Julie, Mandy and Mary,

Nice to greet you again.

We are really sorry that your trip was not as you expected.

At no point we have downgraded you from any accommodation, as the ones that have been booked have never been modyfied, and for this we always have written proofs records.

What has happened is that you have confused the reference accommodations of the initial quote, even do it says clearly that they are subject to availability, and if not available, you would have a similar category.

The main person of contact of your trip (Mary) received all the documentation with all confirmations on 07/08/2024 and on the 16/08/2024 she even asked us about some of the accommodations that are booked in writting, so I am not sure if maybe the comunication between you and her went wrong at some point, but all confirmations have been clear from the beggining and Mary was conscious about it.

Regarding calling the assistance department, I can confirmed that we have the record that you have spoken with then twice while travelling, and there is no record of any missed calls. What we did find are missed calls on the same dates to our Reservations department (which is not the number you needed to call) on the break time, and therefore they where missed calls.

These calls where directly checked with the assistance department and they have confirmed that you had found out the correct number and then were able to speak with them.

Regarding the milleage, as explained to you when you did call the asssitance department, unfortunately we are not responsible if you don´t read the information that we send you, where it clearly explains that you need to take the ferry for a few minutes and walk all around (as we do not even provide information about how to walk all around)

Regarding an accommodation not letting you use the bathroom of your room before check in time, this is totally normal when the room is not ready and therefore check in times exist.

We were wishing to speak to you on the phone (together with the main contact person) in order to check all details with you and offer you a solution, but unfortunately we have not been able to reach you.

We would highly aprecciate if you contact us, in order to offer you a solution.

Best regards,

Hi Richard,

Thank you for trusting Orbis Ways!
