Please avoid.

I purchased a used 2019 plate Fiat 500x from Ross in early August. Vehicle only had one previous owner and mileage was fairly low for the age of the vehicle, therefore I thought this would be perfect to downgrade to (previously had a 2023 Peugeot) to save some money due to having a baby.
I was told when purchasing the vehicle by Ross, that the car would be serviced prior to being given to me. I took this as though the vehicle would have a good check over, I was wrong. Prior to collecting it I had confirmation via email that it had been serviced.
On collecting the vehicle, I noticed there was no paperwork or indication of a service being done. The latest service in the book was from March 2025. I questioned this on my collection to be told it wouldn’t have been serviced but had a ‘used vehicle check’ .
Less than 2 days later, I discovered the vehicle had no coolant. I topped this up and within less than 24 hours it was empty again. It had a leak. I also noticed the engine was idling very rough which didn’t quite seem normal and the gears were knocking when changing. On top of this the DAB wasn’t working properly. It only worked on one channel. On my test drive, the radio was on this working one channel, therefore I didn’t notice the DAB in fact didn’t work.
As I was still within my 30 days of purchasing the vehicle, under the Consumer Right Act, I had the right to reject the vehicle, so I took it back to the dealership.
I was told by the used vehicle Manager Kiran that I was wrong and that I must give him the opportunity to fix the vehicle first. This isn’t what I requested but was given no other choice. I also asked for compensation in replacement of a refund to be told they don’t offer any compensation. I stressed that the coolant leak should have been picked up on the so called ‘used vehicle check’. I asked for paperwork of this check but was given the invoice for the service in March.
The vehicle was in the garage at the dealership for around a week. The coolant leak was fixed with a new seal. The DAB was fixed with a new part. I was told the rough Idling was due to the vehicle being 3 cylinder and that there were no issues with that. Unfortunately I forgot to chase the gear noise while the vehicle was in the garage and therefore had to take it back at a later date.
The day I took it back in regards to the gear box, a service technician came out for a drive with me and confirmed he could hear the knocking. He told me he thinks the vehicle has had a new clutch so could be the reason. On return to the dealership they said they would put the vehicle on the ramp and give it a check over. 10 minutes later, they said they checked it over and it was fine and no issues. I don’t believe that in 10 minutes a gear box can be checked over that quickly. Before leaving I asked for my paperwork of previous work/service on the vehicle, for question to be avoided. However, the male at the desk confirmed that the used vehicle health check was carried out in MARCH 2025. He said to me ‘I assume that’s just before you picked the vehicle up’ to which I replied ‘no, I bought it and picked it up in August’. This confirmed NO checks were completed on the vehicle prior to handover and the vehicle had been sat on the forecourt since then.
Since the vehicle has been into the service garage at the dealership, the gears still knock and now a new noise has developed. A squealing/squeaking noise from the engine while idle and squeaking/creaking from under the bonnet when pulling off.
I had a bit of faith restored when the coolant and DAB issues were fixed, however I do not believe this car has been checked over properly and by competent mechanics. I am now having to go to an independent mechanic and pay for a full check over. I have had the vehicle for 25 days (minus the days it was in the garage) and get nervous to drive the vehicle especially being pregnant.
I have been a Palmers customer for the last 8/9 years and never had such issues. I really am truly disappointed and now having to take this further.

Unhelpful and Uninterested

My Fiat 500x was stalling at every intersection. I took the car in to them as a last resort, to be fixed and said there were no error messages, left the service history (which they didn't look at). They ran diagnostics which didn't pick up an error. Checked the oil and found there was no oil in it and there was a leak. The car had had an oil change in Oct 24. I asked why the oil sensor hadn't shown that the oil was low on the dashboard. They didn't know. I asked why they hadn't looked into the oil sensor and they said it was because I hadn't asked them. They didn't fix the oil leak. Didn't have any suggestions of what needed to be carried out further, other than "see how it goes" and then if there are problems, replace the Multiair unit - which they quoted 1.5k-2k, and they weren't even sure that would fix the problem. I found them unhelpful and uninterested. I wouldn't recommend.

Avoid

Avoid at all costs
Went for a test drive in a car the didnt have, had to drive a different model
Ordered a new car after being told they had “ field loads of them “
Paid a deposit with a delivery time of 1 week
Then told delivery would be 2 months !!
Asked for deposit back after only 2 days
They refused, yet its them that have broken the contract
Nasty people, nice and glossy on the outside , untrustworthy crooks.

Ross at Palmers Fiat was great

Ross at Palmers Fiat was great! Helped me choose the right car for me at the right price for me too. Was extremely knowledgeable in the Fiat I was looking to purchase and was able to answer all my questions. Once the deal was agreed, he kept me up to date on when I could expect my car. Highly recommended Ross and Palmers in Hemel if you are looking for your next car!

I would not buy a car from Palmers Group, ever again.

I had hoped that my previous review of Palmers would assist me, but to no avail. Vehicle still not fit for purpose, no response from Directors, and 10 months of prevarication. Now looking to return the vehicle under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. The Car industry in the past has reported that there has been a major problem with MG's Infotainment system, don't take my word for it, you can google it. Post sales support has been awful, I would not buy a car from Palmers Group, ever again.

Do they ever answer their parts and service emails or phone ? i've waited over a week and despite many phone calls being put on hold and no responses to emails i'm no further forward. All very well having one phone number for all departments, but it would be helpful if they answered the phone.

Met with Daniel the Subaru salesman at Palmers Hemel Hempstead and found him to be very helpful. My family and I were new to the Subaru brand but had a good experience with Daniel @ Palmers from start to finish. Very helpful and knowledgeable and based on our experience with him we decided to go for the Subaru Outback. Thanks for all your help.
