Bought two cat collars = rubbish product

Bought two cat collars - one for a kitten (15 weeks) and another for a mature cat (3 1/2 years) on 19 April 2022, and also tags to go with them.

Both collars were fitted to the cats 100% correctly.

The kitten has not left our bedroom as yet (waiting to be spayed and microchipped), and plays with soft toys and a flexible cord with a small, furry, mouse on the end that we drag across the carpet for her to chase. Yet, the collar elastic snapped and it fell off her while she was simply playing!!! This item had lasted all of 12 days. Then last night - 14 May 2022 - our mature cat came home without his collar. It had apparently fallen off him ... maybe the same sort of thing happened and the elastic snapped, not sure, but he's now without a collar and tag.

$50 excluding postage is what I'd spent on the abovementioned four items, and, concerned about the obviously poor / rubbish standard products I had bought from Purr.Meow.Woof., I e-mailed telling them of my experiences and simply asking to be compensated $15 for the loss of the mature cat's tag. In other words, I just wanted them to replace the mature cat's tag, having graciously and generously accepted the cost of having to replace both collars!!!

The reply that I received from Purr.Meow.Woof. reads; "They are a breakaway collar so they will get lost if a cat loses it, this is a normal process with cat collars." IGNORED me saying the kittens collar BROKE!!!! And further, "In the future we would recommend using a completely round cat tag." But they sell tags IN ALL DIFFERENT SHAPES AND SIZES ... no mention on their website of a recommendation to buy a ROUND cat tag and no other shape!!! Had I read this recommendation before I placed my order, I would have of course bought a round cat tag.

Have advised Purr.Meow.Woof. that I will NEVER buy anything from them ever again.

Coincidentally I have had the pleasure of owing and caring for 23 cats during my lifetime (I'm 66). They've all had collars and tags. NOT A SINGLE COLLAR has ever been broken or "lost".

Update to original message:

Sent Purr.Meow.Woof a copy of the link to this webpage. Received a reply - written by the co-owner - which reads; "Are you trying to blackmail us? Go away."

New Zealand where I live, and where Purr.Meow.Woof operates from has a Consumer Guarantees Act, and this company has breached its obligations by selling substandard products and also ignorning my legitimate and valid complaints.

Update following reply from Purr.Meouw.Woof's co-owner (see below).:

"Mr Bachelor's Degree in English" had the audacity to deride my English when his English was proven to be subpar by him writing; "Your first email which was very badly written you explained both collars BROKE, to which we've simply replied they will breakaway as that is what they're designed to do."

He is a bald-faced liar too claiming that I said both collars "BROKE" (his use of capital letters) when I actually stated that the kitten collar elastic had snapped, and, in relation to the adult cat collar I wrote "maybe the same sort of thing happened and the elastic snapped, not sure."

In response to him saying; "In regards to the kitten collar you've sent or offered no evidence of the damage which is expected for a replacement which we're only happy to do for any customer with a faulty product - We are required to do this by law and will always do so." In my original complaint e-mail I wrote that; "I had to dig out an old, leather, collar from my (deceased) mature cat and use that while I wait for a replacement to arrive - not ordered through your company because no product should last such a short length of time when used under normal conditions." Having thought about complaining to Purr.Meow.Woof. after the kitten collar elastic snapped while she was simply playing, and having also considered asking them to replace the broken kitten collar with a new one but knowing that the new one would be the same kind that had lasted merely 12 days, I decided I did not want to have a replacement of their rubbish product. Accordingly, I decided to absorb the financial loss and put the broken kitten collar in the bin, then going on to order a quality. robust, product - leather with metal buckle not cheap plastic - from another supplier. But, when the adult cat came home without his collar - of same make and material as the kitten collar - I understandably and appreciably thought, exactly as I wrote in my original complaint e-mail; "... maybe the same sort of thing happened and the elastic snapped, not sure, ..."

I also NEVER "demanded" anything but wrote; "I ... believe that you need to provide me with a new, free, Gold tag. Please confirm in reply that you are going to do this to compensate for my losses."

In conclusion, the "break away" collars excuse is outrageous given the ELASTIC and not the CLIP broke!!!

Reply from Purr. Meow. Woof.

Thanks for taking the time to write up this review Lee.

We're going to break this down into sections to give the public an explanation on what is going on.

Your first email which was very badly written you explained both collars BROKE, to which we've simply replied they will breakaway as that is what they're designed to do.

In regards to the kitten collar you've sent or offered no evidence of the damage which is expected for a replacement which we're only happy to do for any customer with a faulty product - We are required to do this by law and will always do so.

Your email also demanded a free tag from us for the lost cat collar, something we or any other company will refuse. We do not and will not ever replace a collar or tag for a cat that has simply lost it as they're designed to breakaway when needed to ensure the safety of your cat.

You have also stated the elastic potentially failed on the standard cat collar, this is false as none of our standard cat collars contain elastic, just the kitten collars.

We also send a welcome email with a link to our blog giving you tips on keeping a collar on for longer and making sure you get the best use out of it. As we have not seen if you have a read of it or how it was placed on your cat we can only assume the collar was lost when your cat needed it to be released saving it's life. You're welcome.

Our note about a round tag is something we advise to any customer who has issues with disappearing collars and one that customers usually thank us for, you bought a fish shape tag which is 38x24mm and the round cat tag we do is 25x25mm and without the points that could allow them to be snagged if that is what is happening.

Our response to question about blackmail was simply put as you emailed a link direct to this review (which we could only view with the link you sent while it was pending) 5 minutes after we said we would not be replacing or be bullied into giving you a free tag and you replied with I am going to give you a bad review, we've been in business for many years and please don't think you're the first person to try this.

You also stated in the email you had bought elsewhere and would not be buying from us again, so why would we even want to send you a freebie when your first email says that? No company would do that.

We've got thousands of customers all over NZ who love what we do, I'm sorry we didn't give into your ridiculous demand and will not be bullied by a bad review to do so.

All the best.
