“Big Smiles, Packed Dancefloor & The Latest & Greatest Hits with Alex Baker”

Unfortunately, this was not our experience at all.

Alex arrived an hour late, meaning our event was without the DJ for a significant part of the time we had booked and paid for. When he did arrive, there was very little interaction with the audience and he appeared disengaged and unhappy to be there.

Although he stayed on later to make up the missed hour, that really wasn’t the point. We booked a DJ from 7pm to 12am, and having the music and entertainment we had paid for at the time we booked it was important, particularly as we had a house full of guests.

The description promised “Big Smiles” and a “Packed Dancefloor”, but unfortunately neither reflected our experience.

Very disappointing and certainly not the service or atmosphere we expected.

Dan did an epic job at our summer party. He did both a live set and a DJ set for us and helped to make our party really wonderful. Dan was an absolute pleasure to work with - he listened to what we wanted, turned up in plenty of time and delivered an exceptional set. We loved having him at the party and would love to work with him again.

Just like to say a big thank you to Neil the JD for my Son christening celebration you definitely had us all dancing. The set up was next level, I highly recommend him to be anyone DJ.

Fantastic service from Sebastian the DJ we hired for our wedding and a great website to have things sorted out for decent prices.

Found a great DJ band for our party. Messaging the band was very easy. I was also able to speak to a customer adviser at Poptop Events too when I needed it.

Easy to find what I wanted and how to book.
The follow up was helpful too.
I chose Jared as a DJ who was happy to play specific genres.
He arrivedl well in time to set up and played many of my favourites as requested. If I ever had another party like this I would be glad to rebook Jared.

I tried to book a wedding DJ through Poptop. Five booking attempts were needed in roughly 17 hours before one accepted. Of the first four, two suppliers did not accept the deposit, one was confirmed unavailable by Poptop's own support team, and one supplier withdrew their quote. After each failure Poptop issued a discount code (NEWSUPPLIER10), explicitly capped at the value of the Poptop service fee.
By the time the fifth supplier accepted, I had reasonably sourced an alternative DJ independently. I cancelled the Poptop booking 1 hour 37 minutes after acceptance and 25 days before the event date — well within the supplier's refundable window. Poptop refunded the £199 deposit in full but retained the £39.76 service fee as a "cancellation fee."

I raised a formal complaint. Over four rounds of correspondence:

The £39.76 was first described as a "cancellation fee" under T&C section 7.5, then as 10% of "Total Booking Value." Section 7.5 itself says the fee depends on proximity to the event and the supplier's refundable status — both of which weighed in favour of no fee.

I was not provided with documentary evidence of the "Total Booking Value" used in the calculation, nor evidence that the calculation method was disclosed at the point of booking.

After I cited the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (s.49 reasonable care and skill; ss.62 and 64 fairness and transparency of consumer terms), Poptop's Customer Support Lead wrote in writing that:

"The material in our support documentation does not go into the level of clause by clause detail you are asking for... nor does it contain a more granular internal definition of 'booking value' or 'booking fee' beyond what has already been explained to you."

"Our help content does state that the client service fee is non refundable when the client cancels a booking... there is no additional written provision that overrides this rule."

The Consumer Rights Act arguments were "matters for your card provider, Trading Standards or the courts to decide." Appalling!

In other words, Poptop confirmed in writing that the rule under which my £39.76 is being retained sits in their "help content" rather than expressly in the Terms and Conditions I agreed to at the point of booking, and that the T&Cs themselves do not adequately define the terms used to calculate the fee.

The only remedy offered was a discount on a future booking — which is conditional on using the platform again and costs Poptop nothing if I do not.
Practical advice for anyone considering Poptop:

Be aware you may be charged a "service fee" on each booking attempt, and that this fee is treated as non-refundable if you later cancel a booking even where the supplier's own terms make the deposit refundable.
Ask in writing, before paying, what the "Total Booking Value" is and how the service fee is calculated from it.
Be aware that, in my experience, repeated supplier non-acceptance can happen on the same day for the same booking, requiring multiple attempts to produce one accepted booking.

I am proceeding via a card-issuer chargeback and a complaint to Citizens Advice / Trading Standards. I leave the experience for others to weigh.

I booked Jared for my wifes birthday and he was excellent. Very accommodating to requests and was generous with his time. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Your vendors are rip offs. And what they put up online is different from what they decide to charge.

They over charged us. I wish I was paid for saving a life ( I am a nurse), as much as a dj charged us for 4.5 hrs work!

DJ Funkomatic was brilliant!

He read the room knew the audience, and it was a fantastic night because of it.

He was late, but this was just an unseen variable and he kept me up to date.

I would highly recommend this gent.
