I've been wanting to learn European Portuguese for a long time and this site has been a godsend!
It's the perfect one-stop shop for everything: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation.
And to make studying less boring, there are so many ways to practise!
I love the short videos and the podcasts. It's also about real life situations, language I can use (not like o tigre bebe leite/the tiger drinks milk - and other nonsense from other language learning apps).
My Portuguese went through the roof as soon as I signed up for membership! I am motivated, consistent and learning in a fun way!

I just wish there was a platform like this for more languages!

"Practice Portuguese" is a fun way of learning Portuguese and I started here about 2 years ago. I would like to thank you today as I passed the official DIPLE B2 level exam for Portuguese.

The app is hands down the best on the market for learning European Portuguese. Rui and Joel (the creators) have created an excellent program that is very comprehensive with grammar, listening, and speaking.

Definitely the best app to learn European Portuguese! Going through all units I could clearly see progress in my journey. I wish there would be more apps like this to learn other languages too! I would be a polyglot very soon then :)

Clever and engaging way to learn European Portuguese

There are so many different learning options, includingand video recordings of real Portuguese speakers. Language rules are also clearly set out so you don't need to guess how the words work. This is a great way to learn.

Preparing for a move to Portugal and this is the best European Portuguese learning tool I've found. I especially appreciate the pronunciation (Portuguese is not a phonetic language) help, the bite-sized chunks, and the variety of tools available to the average learner. While not cheap, the monthly rate is in line with other online apps that don't match PP (and I've tried a few).

I cannot believe how much I have learned and continue to learn in a relatively short amount of time using Practice Portuguese, both the app and website just depending where I am. I have tried MANY websites, apps, and podcasts, and NONE come anywhere close. I have even started having thoughts in Portuguese when I wake up in the morning!

If you want to get the most out of Practice Portuguese, take time to familiarize yourself with all of the ways to learn, and make sure you use all of them- they work in different ways to make the language stick permanently in your brain. When I first started, I only did the lessons and didn't use the other components, and I didn't have the same results. It's designed to reinforce your learning in multiple ways, based on research about language acquisition (they mention this in videos).
There are 3 main components: 1) lessons/ units, 2) Practicing listening with videos, podcasts and audio scenes, and 3) "Smart Review" with flashcards and on-the-go quiz repetition of phrases you are working on. It's important to use all 3 together to really start to grasp how the language works. Spend time exploring the site/app and use all of it for the best results. I use it every single day. You get points for your activity so it becomes sort of a fun game for me.

Here is a breakdown of exactly how to use this website and app to maximize your results:

Start with completing one or more lesson units. These are well-organized by topic and level, and have you actively participate while learning, which reinforces what you are learning. It's not just reading. You even have the chance to practice your pronunciation and the software analyzes it for accuracy. On the website, it additionally tells you what words it heard you say with your pronunciation (not necessarily what you intended to say), so you can work on the specific word you are pronouncing incorrectly. You can hear words and phrases at normal speed and at slow speed. They also have regular Portuguese speakers saying the phrases outdoors so you can get a sense of the real feel of the language at a normal speed, as well as the intructor's voice. I recently had a native Portuguese speaker complement my pronunciation and said it was unusually good for a beginner (I am A2)!

After the lesson, you can add vocabulary words and phrases to "Smart Review" flashcards and on-the-go verbal repetitions and then use the "Smart Review" every single day. When you use Smart Review, you mark whether or not you guessed correctly, and it has an algorithm to quiz you more on the ones you struggle with. It uses science on language learning to also bring back phrases you previously learned to make sure you still remember them. This is evidence-based language learning at its finest. I use the flashcards on my phone when I have a few minutes, and I use the "Listen and speak" (where it says the phrase in English and you have a moment to repeat it in Portuguese) in the car or when I go for a run. Using Smart Review regularly is ESSENTIAL to really learning. Unfortunately, there is fair amount of material that I learned in the past and then forgot because I didn't have anything like this to continually reinforce the repetition for me. Additionally, you learn more than vocabulary this way. You learn how sentences are structured, even before the individual lessons about that.

I listen to "shorties," short audio scenes about what I just learned when I have a few minutes, and even when I brush my teeth. I listen to them at 0.8x speed first (there are speed options) and read along with the transcript. There is almost always something I don't know or understand, but i do my best to figure out as much as possible from the context. Then I turn on the translation button to see what I missed and replay it. I end up learning new words just by context this way.
You can bookmark lesson notes about subjects that are particularly challenging to refer to later (like the verbs vir and vim in the past tense which are frustratingly similar). The comments at the end of lessons, shorties, videos, and podcasts are actually quite helpful and informative, and the Practice Portuguese team spends time answering questions thoughtfully, so I always learn more from the comments as well.

I may be obsessed, I know, but I went from struggling on my own with books and other podcasts for a year with minimal progress. Suddenly after a month with PracticePortuguese.com I am actually able to have conversations. My only regret is that when I initially signed up a year ago, I didn't really explore what the site has to offer and just did a few lessons but didn't really use this amazing resource the way it is designed to be used. I came back over the summer to realize how much I had missed out on, and now I am unstoppable. My family may stage an intervention.

If you are a beginner and start at the beginning (me) you will be led logically and practically into the Portuguese language. The lessons are well paced and the review and test sections help to assimilate the language.
I would absolutely recommend Practise Portuguese.

Practice Portuguese is a very useful tool to learn Portuguese, especially for early beginners. I find it really complete, there are lessons, videos and interactive questions, you can practice your pronounciation and also ask questions to the team if unclear.
And last but not least, you can see that both Rui and Joel put their heart on this project. Congrats! :)

I was very happy to finally find an app allowing me to learn european portuguese. It combines seamlessly vocabulary and grammar, facilitates revisions and is just very fun to use with short audios and videos adapted to all the levels. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning portuguese

Great website, good lessons with a clear progression path. Everything one would need to learn European Portuguese.

The helpful team from Practice Portuguese is now responding to my experience with words that can now be interpreted as character slander. "Cruelty" is never a word taken lightly in legal circles. Continuous Issues with the treatment this company gives to this customer demonstrate, ironically, that while teaching a language, the responders from that team choose their words poorly when responding to a perfectly reasonable complaint. It would be best for them to quit responding at this point before they are sued for public defamation of character.

This app is the best Portuguese learning app I've had.
1- it's European Portuguese through and through.
2- in each unit there a chance to ask questions etc. Then a team member pretty much always answers. It's great.
3- there's a separate section for verbs and the conjugations, besides those in the units.
4- each unit comes with pre-reading notes when needed.
5- these notes are also accessible through another section
6- I love the falsh cards to test yourself on the content saved from previous units.
I still have to explore so much more, such as the podcasts. This app is spot on!

I feel like Practice Portuguese provides a very approachable and dynamic way of learning European Portuguese. Their additional content like their YouTube videos and podcasts are great for learning, too. They also seem to be quick to engage with comments and queries from customers, as I've seen on the lesson pages and from having mailed them.

This site continues to improve all the time. Each day I use it, I often notice improvements to the user UI that make the lessons easier to master.

Brilliant language programme. Love the way you can ask questions about grammar and get a really clear response. Lots of content. Really excellent.

This is easily the most comprehensive app for learning European Portuguese. I moved to Portugal in early 2021 and started using this website from day one. Along with practicing speaking with friends, this app has helped me to get to about an A2/B1 level over the past two years. I would be even better had I devoted more time exclusively to learning Portuguese. Practice Portuguese (PP) really shines in the areas of pronunciation and grammar. There have been instances where people have thought I was Portuguese due to the way I spoke, only to shortly find out that I don't understand everything they say. Again, this is not an issue with the app but of my own determination. This also highlights that you also need to be very courageous and SPEAK with people at any opportunity you get. My only critique for PP is to maybe adopt tutors or coaches. But the product is quite exceptional as it is now. 5 stars!

This app combines lessons, grammar, vocabulary and practical practice in a way that makes more sense than any other app I have used. It is worth the price.
