Unexpectedly disappointing Schema training experience
I attended the first day of the basic two days Schema program offered by Psychology Training based in Melbourne. The workshop was facilitated by Dr Christopher Lee.
Initially I was impressed with the facilitator, who seemed intelligent, articulate and knowledgeable.
However, as I asked questions and shared some reflections during the day, the facilitator became increasingly abrupt, dismissive and passive aggressive, leaving me feeling increasingly uncomfortable.
Given that I made perhaps 7-8 courteous & constructive contributions during a 7-hour day, I found his behaviour disturbing and offputting. I did not return the next day.
When I approached the business for a refund of the workshop fees, I was told that as the business incurred expenses in putting on the workshop I would not be given a refund. The reasons for my withdrawal relating to the quality of the training and the facilitator’s behaviour were completely dismissed.
A skilful educator encourages and welcomes questions and alternative viewpoints as an opportunity to go deeper into the subject matter rather than feeling threatened and acting resentfully. An ethical company is concerned about the quality of its offerings and consumer satisfaction and will take responsibility for its mistakes.
If you are happy to be lectured at by a knowledgeable but also insecure & defensive expert, this workshop may be for you. If you value an open and in-depth exchange and exploration of ideas leading to genuine learning, I suggest you look elsewhere.
