Had my Quella single speed for about 4 years. Commute daily, takes an absolute battering. Desperately needed a new wheel - hub had perished. Expected a simple hub but tyres and inner tube included to... See more

About Quella Bicycle
Written by the company
Fixies exist at the unique intersection of thoroughbred track racing and urban fashion. Quella was created to encompass the best of both. We combine vintage inspired, minimalist British design and 21st Century track technology to create elegant, timeless bikes that function at the top end of the fixie market and, importantly, don’t break the bank.
Since our launch Quella has evolved into a company with big brand capability and small brand personality, with customer service at the forefront of all we do. Our bikes are hand-built in our ‘Old Egg Shed’ on the outskirts of Cambridge by our experienced team of bike-builders, allowing you almost limitless freedom in the builds that we can undertake.

A purchase some 10 years ago
A purchase some 10 years ago.
I bought my Quella single speed steel framed machine for commuting. I am still using it now 6-8 times a week 5-6 miles each way.
It has been a rock solid performer suffering only occasional punctures and scratches from my falls, my fault not the bike’s. I hope to be buried with it!
Beautiful Bike
I’ve had no issues whatsoever since I’ve bought the bike. It’s an absolutely beautiful bike and made with quality materials. I’ve had a lot of positive comments from people about the bike and will definitely buy from Quella in the future. They’re also very responsive to calls and email and they’re good with after sales care or questions you might have.
Great Service
I have ordered Accessories and Parts which have been good value for money and delivered promptly - Quella are the single speed ‘go to’ Company
A great company to deal with
A great company to deal with, my Oxford bike arrived within 48 hours and was easy to build up. Great looking bike and all seems very well made with a beautiful paint finish. First few rides haven’t disappointed, super smooth and solid. Very happy!😊

Beautiful bike built to a very high standard. The sales and aftersales service have been exemplary since purchasing on the cycle to work scheme. I don't claim to be an expert but the Oxford Varsity is an excellent commuting bike for me. Pricing of spares is reasonable so no need to go elsewhere. Highly recommend.
Exceptional Customer Service
I recently bought a Nero to replace my much loved daily commute bike and couldn't be happier. I had an issue with my local bike shop during the build of the bike and Quella went out of their way to help. Going above and beyond with customer service! Big shout out to Jess, Mike and the team. Looking forward to getting to know my new bike better!
Chain breaks and worn tyres
My experience with the Nero bike has been frustrating. I got it assembled by Halfords. Since then I've had two chain breaks. After the first and replacing the chain myself, I got Halfords to re-inspect the bike, since a chain break is normally so rare and dangerous. As per the other reviews, it seems it is not so rare for this bike. Eventually I put a on a half-link chain which has held up so far.
The bike is used for a simple commute to work and hasn't had much mileage. After a puncture I inspected the tyres and both were worn through. Again, replacement with hardier parts was needed.
The bike overall is ok value for money - but it seems there is some design issue or skimping with component choices leading to some danger and a maintenance headache.
Struggles under pressure
I have mixed feelings about my experience with Quella. The concept behind the company is excellent, offering bikes that are easy to receive and simple to set up. However, I've encountered a couple of issues with my Nero Courier Black Single-Speed Bike in less than five months of ownership.
Living in Manchester city centre, I use my Quella bike about five times a week to commute to work and travel to various places, averaging 30 minutes per journey. I’d like to note that I am quite competent with bike maintenance and set up, and I also perform regular cleaning and oiling to prevent issues. The terrain is mostly flat, the roads are relatively well-maintained, and my riding style is not particularly demanding. Despite this, after just 2-3 months, the tension screw on the right side of the bike stripped and would slip whenever I applied pressure to the pedals. Additionally, the thread where the tension screw was inserted into the bike was also stripped, requiring me to purchase a third-party chain tensioner that could be clipped on from the back of the bike. More recently, the bike chain snapped, marking yet another mechanical failure due to the bike being unable to handle the tension from the pedals. It’s disheartening to face these issues within five months, especially on a bike priced at £399.
While I’m not a bike designer, my recent experience suggests that Quella needs to reassess the quality of their product.
Quella might try to respond to this review by highlighting that their frames are made of ‘Hi-Ten Steel’ and they use ‘KMC Z410’ chains, but despite their specifications, my bike still experienced mechanical failures with these components. Quella might also argue that my bike setup was incorrect, but I can caveat this with the fact that I followed Quella’s own setup videos (in addition to using my knowledge from previous experiences).
A single-speed bike should be able to withstand the regular tension and pressure of everyday use, yet mine did not.

OK so there was a problem
OK so there was a problem, perhaps Halfords should have spotted it, the front chainwheel wasn't quite round, but Quella stepped up. They were easy to contact, they were knowledgeable and helpful. They solved the problem quickly and without charge. I'd choose them again.
You make amazing bikes that just love to be ridden.
This company always responds, they make great bikes, have great service and are always trying to help.
Here is my story over the last 6 years.
I have owned a first generation varsity trinity. I replaced it with a Nero cappuccino, lovely bike. Someone borrowed it and never gave it back.
So I replaced that with a quella Cambridge, carbon wheels, big gear and bigger lock. However this year I was diagnosed with arthritis. I can't get my leg over the frame.
So I contacted them asking for a step through. They responded within hours and better than that said they will look into to it for 2025.
I cant wait to come back. This is just a great company to deal with, that makes a great product.

A great purchase.
I purchase a Nero - black.
I am over the moon with the bike, its light and the gearing ratio is ideal for my work commute.
The purchasing process was very intuitive, I wanted a few modification and the staff were so helpful and actually made the process enjoyable.
Amazing company
Amazing company. The staff here are so helpful and the bikes are fantastic.
Great looking bike at a great price
Great looking bike at a great price, Abi was really helpful and organised a couple of changes for me. Bike arrived in 2 days with DPD and I love it!
meh..
Nice aesthetics, decent frames, terrible components - when looking to fix an issue I had with my wheel this was there response just before disappearing back in Oct 22-
Dear Michael
Thank you for sending over your video.
It does appear that your wheel has a slight buckle. We can look to replace this wheel for you however Abi did mention that you outlined that the buckle was not present when the bicycle arrived?
Quite often buckles in Mag wheel occur due to impact when riding, this can be as little has dropping down curbs and riding uneven surfaces. They do not take impact as well as a spoked wheel and cannot be made tru once they bucklel! Magnesium is also not as flexi as a carbon 3 spoke.
Kind regards
Regards
Chris

Quella Fixie,Really Disappointed with this Bike!!
We bought our son a Quella fixie bike for his 15th Birthday via Halfords, we have had nothing but trouble with the bike since the very day we picked it up, we are currently on our 5th Broken chain and now have a bike that our son refuses to ride to school anymore as he doesn’t trust it and feels that it is unsafe.
We are currently trying to get a refund on the bike in order to try and purchase an alternative bike.

An ill-conceived bike and poor response.
I bought a Cambridge electric bike and it came, I built it, worked out how to get it going, rode it for a couple of hundred yards and realised I’d made a mistake!
My only experience of electric bikes was of comfy ones, the kind of thing that might appeal to guys who need an electric bike.
But this is not at all like that, it has thin tyres, a saddle which clearly yearns to slice you in two, and racing handle bars. I’d have loved it when I was twenty, but when I was twenty I wouldn’t have been interested in it being electric. So I guess, to me, it is an ill-conceived machine.
Anyway, I emailed them to see if they would offer me a refund of any sort. But No, I’d ridden it, so all they could offer was to sell me a different saddle, different tyres, and different handle bars. Which would combine to spoil its undoubtedly good looks.
So, I’m disappointed. I’d have thought they could’ve given me some sort of refund and sold it to a guy who’d appreciate it being already built, even if ridden for a couple of hundred yards. That’s £1k per hundred yards!
I see Quella have responded and I have to say I think they are being disingenuous when they say ‘it is difficult to accept a bicycle back after 2 months having been on rides as we are unable to re-sell this item brand new’. They know full well it had not ‘been on rides’ I just got on it once for a few hundred yards. Similarly, they know I wasn’t thinking they’d pass it off as brand new, I was simply enquiring whether they’d take it back and give me some sort of a refund. So I’ll stick by my original review and elaborate some more if required.

Loving my Quella Nero
Loving my Quella Nero. Agile and sturdy. Extremely quiet if you don’t forget to lube the chain from time to time. I don’t usually care much about looks but the simplicity of this design won me over.
I have always been a cycle touring enthusiast, and this is my first real single-speed. I absolutely love the change, in particular being able to ride without thinking about gears and re-learn how to use body weight and posture to maximise performance instead. It’s so much fun and so rewarding.
All the components used are good quality in relation with retail price. Plus, if I may express a more subjective opinion, It’s a pleasure to support local companies obviously built on passion, rather than bigger firms whose strategies are largely built on greed.
Ok enough words gotta go and ride now.
Bye
