AVOID. This company is a scam. They will fake your signature to sign the car off without marking off all damages and then invoice you an extortionate amount even when there is photo evidence of the “ problems “ before the car had been driven. No staff on arrival or leaving and will try and take your money. Avoid at all costs!!!

Unexpected charges and lack of transparency – read before booking
We rented a car from Rentsmart24 at Malpensa airport. Initially, everything looked promising: 24/7 shuttle service, affordable rates (under €40/day), and a smooth pickup.
However, at check-in, we were asked to sign the rental agreement before seeing the car. We were strongly advised to buy extra insurance — a point echoed by many other reviewers. Without it, we were told even a minor scratch would cost €300. With the insurance, the daily rate rose to about €52/day.
When returning the car (outside office hours, as allowed), we were told to simply leave the keys inside. No inspection took place. A few hours later, we received a charge for a “missing parcel shelf” (a removable trunk cover), along with an unexplained extra fee of €100.
We contacted customer service to explain:
– The parcel shelf was never in the car when we picked it up
– It wasn’t mentioned in the vehicle condition report
– It is not an essential car component
– It would have been physically impossible to fit our luggage if the shelf had been there
The response? That we should have reported its absence at the start.
We found similar experiences shared by other customers regarding accessory charges and lack of check-in/check-out transparency. In our case, we were not shown any photographic evidence or given the chance to discuss the issue before being charged.
In our opinion, clearer documentation, photos at both ends of the rental, and better communication would go a long way toward restoring customer trust.
We have submitted a formal complaint to the relevant consumer authority.

Thieves, please be careful of that. I rented a car from the company rentsmart24 and paid everything they owed me and comprehensive insurance about a year ago. Now they are withdrawing money from me without justification or an official invoice. When I call them, they tell me to call another center a number of times without result.

Please be careful with them. They stole my money after a year of renting without any bills or anything. We live in Europe and when you call them they don’t speak English and they throw problems at each other and you don’t benefit from anything.
how to get your money back
Today, after 5 weeks, I got my money back, thanks to my bank. After the incident, I called my bank, explained what happened, showed them some reviews on google and trustpilot. They fought rentsmart, and VISA got my money back from them. Also, they fined rentsmart with 500 euro for bad practicies.

Fraudulent scammers and cowboys!
Rented with the Milan Linate airport office on Via Baracca 6. Rented via the Auto Europe site. Customer Ratings on Auto Europe looked good, I don’t know why because this company will rip you off whenever they can. Pickup was ok, it took a while as there is an online check-in which is glitchy. They didn’t check the car with us before we drove off (lesson learnt) but we took extensive photos of all dings, bumps and scratches, which were multiple. Difficult to get detail in full sunlight but we did a pretty good job. Retuning the car 4 days later, the tall thin bald man in the office suspiciously went straight to the rear bumper on the driver side (he didn’t even bother to look at the rest of the car), and pointed out almost invisible damage (striations in the paintwork and a crack in the bumper). I showed my photos of the damage but he refused to see and accept them, he said they were not clear and he would have to charge me for the accident we had. There was no accident, no one hit us and we did not hit any other vehicle. He then took so long going over the rest of the car and the interior and talking to the shuttle bus driver, that we risked missing our flight home. Eventually I had no choice but to accept or miss our flight, which he knew! We were charged €313 euro for damage we did not cause, that was there when we picked up the car. It was so obvious that they were scamming customers, they tried the same approach with the car that was dropped off before us. Looking at other reviews on google and TP, I can now see that this is a common occurrence with this bunch of rip off merchants, Avoid at all costs unless you are willing to pay for costs that you don’t owe!
Stay FAR away – outright scam in Palermo!
This company is an absolute DISGRACE. I rented a car through Rentsmart 24 in Palermo, and upon returning it, I was suddenly charged for “new damage”: a small scratch that was clearly already there. No proper inspection at pickup, no clear documentation, and then out of nowhere they deduct hundreds of euros from your deposit.
At first, I thought I was just unlucky — until I checked Trustpilot… Hundreds (!) of people with exactly the same experience. Always in Palermo, always some alleged “damage” that wasn’t reported, always losing your deposit. This isn’t a coincidence — this is a well-oiled scam operation. Rentsmart 24 in Palermo survives by stealing customers’ deposits.
I’ve filed a complaint with the European Consumer Centre and started a dispute with my credit card provider. Don’t be fooled by the low prices — you’ll end up paying much more in the end, with zero service and nothing but stress in return.
NEVER AGAIN Rentsmart 24. If you want to save yourself the nightmare: do NOT rent here.

Rip off car rental company. Worst customer service
We arrived into Palermo Airport 30 minutes after our estimated arrival time at 22.30hrs due to delayed departure. The shuttle bus to the car hire collection point took a while to arrive.
When the shuttle arrived we were driven to a remote car hire collection point. After we declined to purchase the enhanced insurance cover we were informed that we would be charged 75€ due to arriving late for the collection. The representative referred us to the terms and conditions in our hire agreement which stated that a late charge would be payable. There was no such provision in our contract. Despite this the representative insisted that the late charge would have to be paid otherwise we would not be able to get the get the car and we would have to go elsewhere.
As my wife was heavily pregnant, it was late in the evening and we were fatigued from the flying we were left with no other option but to pay the late charge.
The representative was rude and dismissive throughout. We felt completely robbed and it left a bad start to our holiday.
We will never use the company again. Beware of the rip off charges at Palermo Point hire.
Dishonest and make fraudulent damage claims
Returned car to Pisa office at 7.30am on 22nd April after emailing them to make sure there would be someone there to check vehicle in. There wasn’t and this is when the scam started. I received poor quality photos of a wheel and a message saying had I got a photo of it. They then said I had damaged it ( which I hadn’t!) and would need to pay 123 euros for it. When I asked for further clarification they did not send any and just charged my credit card. I have since taken this up with discover cars and my excess insurance but recommend you avoid this company at all costs. They are dishonest and you should AVOID! AVOID!

Thieves! They hand you the vehicle, but leave the pre-inspection up to you. So, you don't really know what they consider damage or not. They take advantage of the situation, knowing that the renter wants to leave as soon as possible. When returning the vehicle, they pointed out some scratches, saying they were from plant branches that weren't there before, which was impossible because the vehicle was parked in an underground lot. Because of this, they charged me 140€ in damages to my card. Additionally, they included another 60€ in "administrative fees" on the invoice, which they hadn't previously budgeted."

Unauthorized Charges After Car Rental Return – Urgent Request for Clarification
Dear RentSmart24,
I am writing to formally dispute several unauthorized charges that have been applied to my account after returning the rental vehicle.
We returned the car 8 hours earlier than scheduled, with a full tank of fuel, cleaned, and in excellent condition. We even repaired a broken side mirror that was already damaged before we picked up the vehicle, to avoid any potential disputes. Additionally, we have full video documentation of the car’s condition before and after the rental.
Despite this, we were charged for:
• Late return (even though the car was returned early)
• Damage we did not cause
• Ongoing daily charges with no explanation
These charges are completely unjustified, and I request an immediate investigation and a full refund of any incorrect amounts. We are especially disappointed that such behavior from RentSmart24 has left us with a negative impression of the country, despite our overall wonderful experience in Italy.
If no resolution is provided, we will initiate a chargeback through our bank and submit formal complaints to the appropriate consumer protection authorities.

We arrived to pick our car up an hour late due to flight delays. The shuttle bus signage was non existent and across the road from all the other rental places as we only found out later. We ended up having to walk to the hire company. On arriving, we were told that we were too late to pick our car up. We had paid for 2 weeks so if I wanted to leave the car in the parking lot for the duration; it would not have mattered. Amazingly they had a car available at almost 4 times the price we had already paidb. We were told we had to claim any money back from Discover Cars. We rang the number for Discover Cars and it turned out the number was for RentSmart24. Total scammers. Do not use and stick with reputable companies and do not be seduced by seemingly low prices. I am now trying to get my money back.

Avoid renting cars from these scammers. They are poorly rated and would advise against handing them your credit car details.
I opened a case against them through the European Consumer Centre, because they decided to withdraw EUR 433 from my credit card "based on a false claim" and "pretending not to have the information".

"ECC Italy explicitly requested the trader to provide the name of the insurance company and the claim number. In the trader's last reply, the trader admitted that the documents you submitted were not forwarded to the insurance company. As a result, your credit card was charged for the damages."
Legal proceedings against RentSmart24 have been initated in my home country (EU) - "Judgments issued through the ESCP in one EU Member State are eligible for recognition and enforcement in another Member State".

Escalated the issue to their payment services provider (PSP) - Under PSD2 Article 73, the payment services provider is liable for unauthorised transactions. I have witheld naming the PSP for the time being until they investigate.
