Had a 3 month subscription. T&Cs say You can cancel anytime within your introductory period to avoid moving onto the higher rate, though cancellations may take up to a week to process. However they took payment on 28th Jan for a subscription taken out on 9th November so almost two weeks before the 3 month point. Refused to refund. Note that looking at the account online there is nowhere that gives a subscription end date, nor in the e-mail sent when the subscription is taken out. They tried claiming that the expiry end date is the date of the 13th issues (so less than three months) but this is not mentioned in the offer or confirmation e-mails. In any case, because of Christmas there were two 'missing issues' so 1st Feb was actually the 11th issue delivered.
Great magazine but appalling subscription department.
For example, our house had signed up to two print deliveries by mistake, so I asked them to cancel one. They cancelled BOTH, and refused to reinstate either of them. Arrogant incompetent bxxtards.
Customer service team helped resolve the issue with my voucher. Very grateful to Jack who was quick to respond.
I messed up my subscription renewal and thought I would miss out on their Christmas special offer subscription with free champagne. It was sorted efficiently and politely. Very impressed. Love the content for a realistic view of the world
I had a similar experience in cancelling my subscription as many others appear to have had. In October 2023 I cancelled my subscription to The Spectator and they sent me an email confirming the cancellation. Last week I happened to notice that they had kept charging me for more than a year. It took a week to sort out but they have agreed a refund (but no compensation, despite stealing money from my account). Moral of the story: a) don't subscribe to The Spectator b) if you have ever cancelled a subscription or free trial to The Spectator, go back and check your bank account to confirm they aren't still charging you. And c) check your bank statements...
Very enjoyable events especially the Wine Cruise, although a little expensive. Lunches in the Boardroom are exceptionally enjoyable but very often difficult to get tickets due to limited places and disappointed not to get a place for Christmas lunch.
My wife and I have been to many Speccie wine events over the last few years and without exception they have all been tremendous. Johnny Ray and the guest winemakers always lay on a memorable event and Laura and Chloe put on first rate masterclasses. If you haven’t been you’re missing out! Thanks for many great memories! The conservative party are down, might even be out, why, the behaviour of Michael Gove, Dominic Cummings Rishi Sunak and their follows, towards the resignation of Boris Johnson, is unforgivable treachery by so called loyal friends.
Now the Spectator have employed Michael Gove as Editor, so you must agree with his actions, have you read Nadine Dorries Book The Plot, amazing, that can not be good for the magazine.
What a wonderful way to cruise down the Thames and pummel a few clay pigeons. The cruise was perfectly orchestrated and the lunch and accompanying wines were superb. Thanks to Jonny and the team for looking after us all so well.
I cancelled my subscription on 20th December, or so I thought. Despite receiving email confirmation, they have continued to debit my card. They have not taken any action to refund me despite repeated contact leaving me no choice but to raise a dispute with my bank.
This is unexpected from a so-called reputable magazine. They really should be doing better!

I would like to thank the Spectator for a wonderful informal garden tea party, I thoroughly enjoyed the event.... especially the Royal Marines Bands marching past at the bottom of the office garden, practising the Beating Retreat, which added to the occasion.
Sadly my dear wife, the true subscriber to the Spectator, was unable to attend the party. As I was to be her favourite guest, I took on her role and found a friend to accompany me.
Although nobody knew anybody, everyone started to chatting to the person next to them. Going to get another cup of tea, or something stronger, one got distracted and lost in the crowd, which started a whole new conversation with another stranger.
As the party drew to a close, the chief editor gave us a tour of the Spectator's wonderful office, telling us a little about the magazine's long history, as well as the day to day operation of producing the magazine to fulfil the aspirations of all those who work at the Spectator and meet the expectations of its readers.
As we left to go home, my friend, who had never heard of the Spectator (!), was so impressed he decided to subscribe. As for me, I will be more assiduous in reading my wife's copy of The Spectator.
Thoroughly enjoyable occasion with very attentive and friendly staff. The whole event was convivial throughout and it was great to meet some of the Speccie writers and fellow guests. The refreshments were fab too.
Fantastic party - beautiful location and great to be able to meet so many welcoming people from the magazine. Terrific afternoon - most grateful for the invitation.
There was a warm welcome. It was good to get to see inside No. 22. In the garden, there was a relaxed intermingling of staff and guests, the amazing opportunity to meet star journalists and cartoonists. There were nice things to eat and drink. For a bit of focus and diversion, a good humoured, funny Fraser Nelson presided over a free raffle.
Really, this was a very pleasant couple of hours spent in the company of friendly, interesting people.
Thank you Spectator.
A Friendly and brilliantly organised Tea Party in The Spectator Garden. We travelled down from East Yorkshire for the day and we are so glad we did as it was a great opportunity to meet your favourite writers and fellow subscribers. If you have never been to a Spectator Event do give it a try. Especially the wine classes, This was our first event organised by the Spectator and we now hope the first of many . Subscribe!
We had a wonderful time! Lovely to meet some of the Spectator team and to chat. How pleasant they all are!
I went to a marvelous party,
I must say the fun was intense,
We all had to do
What the people we knew
Would be doing a hundred years hence.
