I was hoping to leave a positive review, because the storage part was actually quite good.

Be very careful before storing your items with Shurgard in Southampton. They operate on a rolling auto-renewal system tied to a strict 15-day cancellation notice period. I gave my notice to vacate 14 days before the end of the billing cycle (missing their deadline by a single 24-hour period), and they offered zero flexibility, trapping me into paying for an entire extra month.

What makes this especially frustrating is their claim that their units are in "high demand." If that were true, they would gladly accept my notice, turn the unit over, and rent it to a new customer. Instead, they clearly prefer to leave a locker empty just to squeeze one final invoice out of a departing customer on a technicality.

I have seen management reply to other Trustpilot reviews claiming they try to make this policy "clear." That is simply untrue. I did not receive a single warning email, nor was I ever sent an email with a clear auto-renewal date. To even find this deadline, I had to dig into documents and do calculations against my invoice dates. By the time I received the invoice at 5 AM, it was too late.

The rule is buried in a 12-page Terms & Conditions document or hidden inside a "Moving out of your storage unit" guide, a document people naturally only open when they are already in the final days of leaving. As a dyslexic person, expecting me to comb through 12 pages of fine print to find a critical financial trap is entirely inaccessible and unfair. If Shurgard actually wanted to be transparent, this deadline would be clearly highlighted in bold in the initial confirmation email.

I challenge Shurgard to explain how hiding essential billing details in the fine print is "clear and accessible." This is a toxic business model that relies on catching customers out. I strongly advise looking for a local storage facility that operates with basic human decency and actual transparency.

Process to use storage unit was very easy

Really, really good experience. When we first visited our unit, we didn’t need to see or speak to anyone - straight in using the app, our unit was ready to use, and the padlock we ordered was waiting.

Somehow we lost the keys within a week… the team were incredibly quick to help and I booked in an appointment to get the lock off the door. The guy who did it was super friendly, as was the lady in reception at the time. New lock on within 10 minutes.

Great place, would recommend to anyone.

I am extremely disappointed with the customer service and overall experience I had with this company.

When I booked my storage unit over the phone, I clearly informed the staff of the exact date I would be vacating. The representative rushed through the transaction and did not properly explain important contract clauses. I later discovered that key terms were not disclosed during the call.

The online booking process also stated there was no admin fee, yet I was still charged one. While the fee itself wasn’t the main issue, the misleading information was frustrating. On top of that, I received conflicting information from different staff members. I was even sent an email confirmation stating that my contract had ended, yet I continued to be billed for additional time — despite the unit being completely empty.

When I escalated the issue to a manager, the situation was not handled professionally. Instead of acknowledging the misinformation and billing error, the manager blamed me for “not fully understanding” the contract. There was no real effort to address or correct the mistake.

I have rented storage units before and have never experienced such careless and dismissive service. The lack of accountability and concern for the inconvenience caused was extremely disappointing. My complaints were dismissed, and the response I received showed little regard for customer experience.

I would not recommend this company based on how poorly this situation was handled.

The manager Daniel was very informative from day one. Explained everything in detail and moving in was easier than I imagined. His assistant Lauren was also very helpful. I would highly recommend Shurgard Self Storage to anyone looking to store their goods at a reasonable, competitive price.

It was very easy to book our storage needs. Staff very helpful when I got there to sort final details. Unit is very clean and perfect for our needs. Easy to access when required. Definitely recommend using them.

This is the first time I’ve rented storage. The whole process was very straightforward and the mobile app makes access to the site and the building really easy.

Very easy to booked online and straight forward process. Easy to find the unit with the map and they had some trolleys in the entrance which I did appreciate.

It was easy to rent the storage I required and the help guide directed me to the correct size I need. The unit was promptly ready and met my expectations.

We decided to use Shurgard as their web site detailed storage examples with sizes. We visited the storage facilities on Saturday, booked it on line on Sunday, Monday afternoon we stored our goods and the unit was the ideal size. We called in after hours on Wednesday, used their app to gain entry through the gates and entry into the building, and all was so easy and trouble free. The other godsend was they have a toilet for old folks like us!!

The staff was nice. The storage is clean and safe. Highly recommended.

The team took in a delivery for me today as I was stuck in traffic and it really helped me out! They were polite and friendly and nothing was too much effort. Really appreciated how forthcoming and engaging they were.
