Shurgard Storage unit Watford concerns

The arranging of the storage unit was easy with the customer service representative being very helpful to get things arranged. This unit in watford is unmanned so there is no one on site to assist when you are at the unit.

The entry code came through ahead of move in date and entry to the unit was fine although finding entry to the gated area was a little confusing. There are lots of trolleys available but depends on how many people are there at the same time.
The app gave me incorrect details as to where the unit was so we spent 20 minutes walking around on first floor trying to find the unit and then called the service line to be called the app was wrong and the unit was on the second floor.

The lift is so old, slow and rickety it really needs an upgrade and with a fully loaded trolley you can only get one trolley in at a time. Additionally we had a point in time where we couldn’t get the lift to move and were stuck so that was very concerning.

The lighting around the units is terrible so inside the unit itself is pitch black so difficult to see anything.

On the ground floor on the way to the lift the corridor has a big area where the concrete has degraded and this means you have to be very careful taking trolleys over it as the corridor is not smooth.

There is an overwhelming smell of urine in the building and definitely concerning and needs to be resolved.

However I suppose you get what you pay for and it is cheaper than other companies so for short term may suffice but I am very disappointed about the lack of attention to ensuring safety and cleanliness by Shurgard.
Would only recommend this storage unit if you can deal with all the above and you don’t need someone on site to help and/or you need it for short term use.

Pricey, Staff is not always around. NOT 24/7 access.

A bit pricey and there is not always a staff there. The access is also not 24/7. You may better off going with another storage company. There also seems to be a rat issues raised by other renters. I haven’t checked my stuff for a month and I am concerned if they got destroyed by the rats or not.

Rats fighting in corridor.
Invoice and reservation said ground floor, actually on first floor.
Very old facility, needs modernisation.
Poor lighting, had to use phone torch.

If I could rate them 0 I would

If I could rate this 0, I would. Absolutely filthy place, infested with rats and 0 accountability taken. Received a phone call to say “sorry” but the guy on the phone could not sound less interested if he tried. We had one box destroyed and the whole unit smell of rat pee and poo. Could not bring myself to keep the sofa and put that into our new place so ended up having to throw the lot which cost us a fortune too. 6 months worth of rent for nothing. Begun informing me of the complaints policy to then retract it and say we couldn’t as we had chosen private insurance and not their insurance which was frankly over priced. Terrible service, no one available to help at the unit and I spoke to another customer who said they were having issues with rats too. If you value your stuff, choose somewhere else.

Awful, rip-off and bad service

Mentions of extra out of hours, but they do not exist. No one at the unit to ever help and no one to answer the phone lines.

Got stuck inside and my removal van couldn’t get in. £1 for the first month is rubbish as I ended up paying £60 once all the extra fees are added.

Total nightmare and can’t wait to move my things out from here.

The Watford facility is an utter shambles

There are no location maps to give a clue as to where your unit is. A lift, also unmarked on the map, that frequently doesn't work as the doors are left open. No stairs to the second floor, so if the lift isn't working you can't get access. Even the roller shutter switch isn't marked properly and is a distance from the shutter. Then there's the problem giving notice, and the fact there's no-one to help when the lift isn't working. Difficult to imagine a worse facility. I've had to ask for a refund as I couldn't access my store when I needed to. Avoid at all cost!

Awful customer service

I have great difficulty in reaching the company by telephone. My last experience, I was put on hold and cut off after five minutes THREE TIMES. The necessary information for me to access the storage unit was not sent through to me. I have since sent several emails and am getting no response to my urgent queries. I was going to take on a second, bigger unit, however, due to the lack of response, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

The code didn’t work

The code didn’t work. I called the office and they kept insisting I go to the branch which I couldn’t as I had a very full day. I ended up paying so much for the taxi as I had not expected the code not to work. The office kept giving me access codes that were not working, stood in the rain for about 20 minutes as they kept giving me wrong codes. My question is, what code could they have given me in the office that they couldn’t give me over the phone. Does it not make more sense to give over the phone so that someone can try it while at the gate to see if it works than go all the way to the office to be given a useless code. After 3 wrong codes I was finally given to me that works. Also, the banner outside the unit is misleading. It says £1 for the first month which I found not to be the case. Shurgard you can do better.

It was easy

It was a good experience. I put my belongings and got them easily using their mobile app. When I arrived at the storage, I used the app to open the doors. The staff was helpful. I highly recommend them.

Restricted access to storage unit

Restricted access to storage unit

When I got there I couldn't fit my items into the unit because there was a low hanging light block. I requested to change my unit and I paid for a bigger space but they would not honour the initial offer which is ridiculous. Instead they took money out of my account without me agreeing to it. There were also rats running around everywhere which was nasty. When I spoke to someone they didn't want to listen and said a manager would call me back. They never did and instead took money from my account.

Amazing Team & Service

Also a huge shout out for the team who i spoke to on the phone who was able to assist me last minute i am truly grateful. It has been a amazing and easy process to get into a unit from start to finish the paperwork is very simple if you provide what has been requested and the ladies at the Harrow branch are very proficient, i would highly recommend these locations.

Great deal on a temp storage unit…

Great deal on a temp storage unit whilst we undertake a house clearance. Easy access. Only shortcoming would be that the unit is at high level meaning use of a moveable staircase required to access which also means boxes etc have to be lugged up said stairs. I don’t think I had option to select ground floor unit but possibly missed that option.
