Rented a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross for a week. Price not the cheapest, but ok. Car was a hybrid but no charge on battery on delivery, and cable is not provided without ekstra fee...Car charges minimal during drive, but nothing useful. Pickup easy, 15 minutes wait, small try of moresale, but they accepted a no without problems. Car not superclean, but acceptable.
Return easy and hasslefree...
Will use SIXT again.

I feel totally ripped off

I feel totally ripped off, they claimed a scratch on the bumper at a cost of 320GBP , and I rubbed it off with a tissue and a bit of spit, they also charged us for a dent on the door, which although we saw, we didn’t record, and accept that’s our error, and they have charged a huge 711 GBP, , it’s very minor, and they will clearly not repair the small blemish, and will most certainly charge many other customers multiple times over for the same mark. Having had an amazing experience across both Greenland and Iceland this past 10 days, unfortunately our parting memory will not be a good one .

Don't rent a car from SIXT in Iceland!

They didn't have the car ready for pickup even though we where delayed and we had given the flight information.
We where then upgrated to a car that wasn't functioning (on the display the motor symbol was on and the tank was empty). They just said "no problem you can still drive this car". But I didn't want to, so now they had to find another car. Then the new car was an absolute down grade! It had so many dents, scratches and cracks in the windshield and was also very dirty inside. But at this point I was desperate to leave, because it took them 2 hours, and I was now late for a meeting. So we took the car. Huge mistake!

At de delivery they where so rude and said that we made a scratch in the car (even though you could easily see that it was old) and they made us pay for it.
But one may say that this is also a way to make money because the dirty car was cheaper than the one we had booked.
I'm wondering if they take a look of which ensurance you have chosen and then go to find faults on the vehicle.
So my advice: Help yourself and choose another car rental company!

Lack of control during delivery

I am very disappointed about the procedure with the delivery of the the rented car. I came 6.50 Saturday morning and there was no one to check the car. Later I got an e-mail where Sixt claimed that there was a damage of the hood. I feel pretty convinced that is not my damage but I cannot prove it.
I have complained to the staff, but they insist.
I have also complained to the director for the first time in my life, but no response. That is not good customer service.
I cannot recommend Sixt to new customers. Please change the procedure of delivery of the car so there is no doubt about any damage.
The suspicion of being cheated is unfortunately present

No issues at all if you are careful

Well, all the car hire companies in Iceland have a lot of very bad reviews, among the "least worst" reviews I have hand picked Sixt.
Based on other people experiences we decided to grab the full insurance coverage and refuel the car by ourselves before return it a week later.
As per reviews suggestions on the collection day we checked every single part of the car looking for dents, scratches and any faulty thing. I took loads of photos and my wife had some videos as evidence thinking ahead on the return date, actually the agent recommended us to do that as well. Even after perform all these visual checks I called the agent to personally show him some small scratches, as per other people reviews recommendation.
The only unexpected expense was he offered us a "sand & ash protection" policy which pays any damage excess OVER 2000 EUR. In case of a strong storm or a volcanic eruption car painting can get damaged and it is supposed that the full protection policy doesn't cover it. Despite we additionally had our personal full car coverage policy from UK we decided to grab it just in case.
We asked him if they had free WiFi in their office and he offered us a WiFi mobile spot instead to take with us for 10 EUR a day. Neither O2 nor Vodafone roaming data services worked and based on previous bad experiences buying local SIMs abroad we decided to take it. We all four were using it on our trip through SW Iceland and it was pretty useful, I recommend it mainly for families or groups.
I drove 1.300+ km with no issues, just one day last strong blizzard.
Return date came over and we refueled on the service station next to Sixt office located turning the corner.
All the return process was OK, no issues, I have had no extra charges since February when I hired the car.
I know it can sound as lot of work to hire a car in Iceland, but it is worth to do it, you are free to go wherever you want, just try to use paved roads in order to avoid any inconvenience.
Tip, next to the main office entrance door there is a kind of umbrella stand containing an angled mirror, it is intended to check the car bottom body so you don't have to kneel looking for any hidden damage.

AVOID AVOID AVOID

Only have 1 start as unable to give zero.

Check in was long, drawn out and confusing.

Tried to sell us extra insurance and told us to inspect the car prior to leaving. Thankfully we did this and took lots of photos.
Was advised that we did not have to bring it back full because it was cheaper for Sixt to refuel it from my 300 euro holding deposit.
Car ran well.

All went wrong when it was dropped off.

Assistant tried to blame me for 'wind damage' which I had not caused and thankfully had taken a photo of damage prior to leaving.

Fuel tank was 5/8 full. They charged 93 euros for refuelling!!!

Not sure how this is cheaper than me doing it myself. I would have, had I realised I was going to be ripped off.

Avoid SIXT at an costs. Do not use.

Unsure why they are scamming people but I'm angry and shocked by their conduct. I was sucked in. It has ruined my holiday.

Sixt Keflavik - amazing staff, great experience

Very good experience with Sixt Iceland. Hired a Jeep Compass for 5 days. Check-in was very smooth, car ran perfectly. A special mention to the staff at the Keflavik branch who were extremely helpful and accommodating. On the car return they kindly offered to drop us off at our airport hotel. Cannot recommend enough.

Full Insurance and refund not paid

I got full insurance for safety reasons when I rented the car.

Unfortunately, I had a flat tyre in a Jeep, and the puncture was more extensive than what the repair kit could solve. When I contacted Sixt on a Saturday during the day, I was informed that there was no support from Sixt. I should contact Road Assistance, and Sixt would refund the value paid.

I had to pay 138.820 ISK (approx 830 €) and after one month, I still didn't receive the refund.

Very disappointing experience

Very disappointing experience. I’m checking off few car rentals in Iceland. This was the worst. Also didn’t get the car I ordered, not even similar. If you don’t take extra insurance, they will find damage anyway. Poor stuff.

Scam Alert!

I rented a car for one day in Keflavik. When I turned the car in, the first question was whether I'd purchased the "premium" insurance...I knew I was going to be scammed when the employee started to very slowly inspect the car knowing I had to be at the airport. She found "damage" on the undercarriage of the car (likely it was already there) and it cost me 408 euros! The employee was rude, slow, and unprofessional. I will never rent from Sixt again! Fortunately, the policy I bought through RentalCover paid for the damage after I filed a claim, but I had to file a claim after I returned home. This franchise has poor reviews-I wish I'd read them before renting a car there. Save yourself the frustration and the potential of being scammed-rent a car elsewhere!

Never, ever book with Sixit!!!!!!!!!

Left to sort out our problem. No help from the help desk ( they wouldn’t pick up the phone )…in the middle of no where with a flat tyre and no spare .
Even a promise of a call back didn’t happen. Our first ( AND LAST) experience of booking with Sixit. They are a customer service business and have no means of support for their customers. DO NOT book with them , they are terrible. We have written to the GM of the business , and have not received the courtesy of a reply. This is the example set from the top. … opt with another rental company . Avoid Sixit. Sixit spoiled our holiday .. beware !!!!

Appalling treatment by Sixt Iceland at Keflavik Airport

My husband, my teenage daughters and I have just had the most appalling experience in the car rental branch at Keflavik Airport.

When we were checking in the man ( Michael ) who was checking is in was very rude to my husband by aggressively saying he couldn’t read his handwriting and insisting he wrote out the form again. Then he tried hard sell techniques to sell an upgrade car. He then insisted we used the same credit card as we did booking with a third party company(QEEQ). He claimed our credit card ended with 0000 and rudely refused to to budge on the matter.

We asked to speak to his manager who was busy with another customer so we waited in uncomfortable silence. My teenage daughters were getting very upset by this situation.

Eventually the manager came over and apologised for his Staff members rude behaviour, asked him to accept any card and walked off.

Where the manager had spent ten minutes with his previous customer explaining various rules and regulations , this gentleman marked a few spots on a piece of paper and shoved it at us. He refused to show us to the car and explain how the car worked and check the car over.

We complained to the manager in the carpark regarding his colleagues behaviour and learnt they this gentleman was due to leave the company that week and apologised once again for his behaviour.

When my husband booked the car he ensured he booked one with room with for two large suitcases. When we opened the boot we found this was not the case. We explained this to the manager who explained unless we paid more for an upgrade we would not be given another car.

He then offered to cancel our booking or charge 260 Euros a day for an upgrade. If he had pointed out one of the back seats could be dropped to allow the luggage to fit while comfortably sitting the two children who were crying at this stage, we could have avoided a lot of angst.

When we asked them to speak to the QEEQ customer helpline they point blank refused to do so and then accused my husband of being rude.

We were very disappointed with Sixt and will probably never use your company again. As regular travellers you have lost our custom and any friends and family we have as well.

Having read the reviews I dread to think what the return service is going to be like. This is a very bizarre experience and hope we will never have to experience this again.

Michael should not be given a good reference for his next job.

Shady, Misleading, Potential Scam, Contract indecipherable

We asked for a hybrid, both for purposes of MPG and environmental concern, they promised us an upgraded hybrid due to wait time. The "upgraded" hybrid they gave us was NOT a hybrid, AND had worse MPG. I even made sure to ask, "does this have the same MPG?", the response I received was "of course!" like the question was a ridiculous one in the first place. Gas is extremely expensive here, a different in MPG could cost us a lot of money in the 10 day span that we have the car. The contract is printed over itself so we can't even read the thing. I'm QUITE positive that is illegal. Sixt Iceland seems incredibly shady and like they are purposefully misleading people to rent worse cars for the same price. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY

Not a very good experience at all

Not a very good experience at all. We arrived 20 minutes later than the pickup time (5:30 PM) due to flight being delayed but it was still just before 6 PM on a workday. But they had the flight number so all was well, I guess. Well, I guessed wrong. The Sixt building with the desk was actually locked. We couldn't reach anyone from Sixt by phone, by mail, by chat, nor anything. In the end we rented by Enterprise just next door and they were at least open until 8 PM. Next day I made a call to Sixt and finally got through. They had been having technical difficulties etc etc, and I should just send them an email and they will take care of the refund. And that is what I did. 2 weeks later still NOTHING. I contacted Booking.com via whom I made the booking and they could at most refund me the insurance. Sixt are still happily skipping across the mountains with my 2 weeks rental charge and probably rented out the car during those two weeks. This experience, of being abandoned outside the airport at 6 PM, with wife and kid, in the pouring cold rain without even anyone to call is the worst car rental experience I have ever had. So please, Sixt Iceland, get your act together and communicate properly with your customers.

Pleasant experience

Rented a car from Sixt Iceland for 5 days. Dealt with Grzegorz. First thing to note, is you need to get a shuttle from the airport terminal, but the offices are the first stop about 3min away, so literally round the corner. There is a lot to consider with regards to insurance, especially in Iceland where weather can be unexpected, so be prepared to go through this. Grzegorz was generous to give us a complimentary upgrade to spiked tyres. Also on our return, he even dropped us at the airport so we didn't have to get the shuttle. The car was in great condition. Overall a pleasant experience dealing with the Sixt team.

The worst experience I have…

The worst experience I have encountered.

I hired 2 day rental via booking.com for a car from Sixt at Keflavik Airport.

From start to finish James was unclear and vague. Tried to charge us more for petrol by telling us it would be cheaper.

Then charged me for rental that I had already paid for via booking.com when I came back and is now going back and fourth with me through emails to argue I made more than one reservation.

He is more interested in getting 5 stars then resolving an error HE has made.

He never showed us the scratches on the car and we videoed them ourself then upon return tried to tell us there were scratches. Honesty is the best policy and so I’ll be honest, Sixt are scammers and you will never get our custom again.

Scammed & Overcharged

I've rented with prior Sixt franchises before without issue and assumed it would be the same with Sixt at Iceland's Keflavik Airport. NOT AT ALL. We were completely scammed.

First, we were told we couldn't change the driver's name on the reservation—even though it was made directly through their site and we were both standing there with identification—so we were charged needlessly for two drivers for ten days.

Then, we were charged for three extra days that we didn't rent the vehicle, in addition to some mystery upgrade fee.

To top it off, they gave us a supposedly new car for ten days of driving in Iceland (with sometimes unpaved roads on their main highway) and, when we returned the vehicle, it was meticulously inspected and a scratch—less than a quarter inch in length—was found on the driver's side rear door.

The manager, Thimmy, charged us an additional $450. I argued that a scratch of this size for ten days on partially paved roads would reasonably be considered normal wear and tear.

We paid the fee, only because we were unsure of WHAT to do and of what would happen if we didn't pay it when we're just trying to return home to another country.

When I returned home, I emailed their office twice, specifically requesting to be forwarded to the franchise owner, to no avail. I did, however, receive confirmations that my emails were received. I'm currently stuck with a $1,725 car rental fee for what was originally an $815 reservation. Needless to say, unless Sixt can offer me an explanation, professional service, and a refund on these completely unreasonable expenses, I won't be using their company anywhere ever again.
