Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 77 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Consumers frequently complained about terrible customer support, extremely long waiting times, and frustrating automated phone bots that made resolving issues nearly impossible. Many people also mentioned unexpected billing errors, unannounced monthly charges, and difficult contract terms. However, some reviewers were happy with the cheap pricing and affordable plans offered by the provider. A few individuals also pointed out that certain interactions with staff members provided genuinely helpful assistance. Despite these occasional bright spots, the overwhelming consensus remains deeply negative due to persistent communication failures and poor reliability.

Tried to change my email…

Tried to get my email address changed so i could receive a link to reset my password as the email i used when signing up was no longer active. Started at 9.30am this morning and now it's 7.30pm
They managed to remove old email and told me to create new account with my current email ( had since 2007) and was told "not a valid email address" utter rubbish. I will be changing providers and taking the two other linked accounts with me. Don't use if you think sometime you may need customer support go elsewhere

The WORST customer service

The customer service is horrendous, and that's saying it lightly. I recently went to Melbourne and purchased the 3 day roaming plan which did not work the entire time I was away. I attempted to contact customer service on my return. Their contact centre is open for 4 hours per day, and instead they push you to go through various chat functions which can take upwards of 1 day just for the verification process (where they ask you for everything but the kitchen sink!). BEWARE! After my plan is over, I am quickly jumping ship.

Unfortunately Skinny have gone dog…

Unfortunately Skinny have gone dog really fast. I bought their 12 month mobile plan only to find that there are many hidden terms and conditions. You cannot send MMS. And, you have to pay to retrieve voicemail. This is not told to you when you sign up and when you bring this to the attention of the staff, they know it's wrong, but they have to be loyal to what they have been brainwashed with to keep their jobs. Do not make the mistake of trusting this low integrity company!

Purchased 52 week plan. Have had difficulty porting number across. The online portal doesn't work. Unable to talk to someone the message always says you have contacted us after hours but it absolutely is not. Hugh delays in answering the Facebook messages. Worst experience ever. Wished l stayed with Kogan a far better company. Would not recommend stay clear away from skinny.

Use of AI tools in advertising

I was browsing the internet when I was presented with an ad for Skinny mobile. I had a feeling it was generative AI, but the text at the bottom of the screen confirmed my suspicions. This presents a lack of care for potential customers, as there surely is no one who is not so ignorant as to ignore the devastating effects that AI tools have on the living environment of potential customers. It also shows a low budget, that they aren't willing to hire an artistic team or actors to shoot a single ad. How can you trust someone who won't put a single dime into getting your attention with your internet?

Good customer service reps

Just opened an account with Skinny and had to get in contact with their customer service to fix an issue with being overcharged.

There was a long wait time. However the customer service rep Mart that I spoke with was extremely helpful. They consistently checked in while on hold to update me on the refund progress which was much appreciated!

I joined Skinny broadband in August

I joined Skinny broadband in August. Worst mistake I ever made. I was with them for about a month and the whole time programs were buffering all the time, sometimes it would just freeze, absolute worst broadband I've ever had.
I contacted accounts and said just cancel, I'm going somewhere else. They said I had to pay early termination fee. What for? I had no service.
Yesterday they took a payment from my bank. There was no direct debit set up and I sure didn't pay their bill so not sure how they got the money but I'm cancelling my card so they don't get another cent. I also binned their modem.
Worst customer service ever.
DO NOT be fooled by how cheap they are, you get what you pay for

This company has been going downhill…

This company has been going downhill for the last three years I have been with them for 10 years but their customer service is terrible they don't return no calls. There customer service hours have reduced they make getting any help beyond impossible on the face book page. They persist in starting my phone calls with a 45 second message that 3G is ending like over 100 times. It's going to be a supreme effort in pain to switch to another provider but I'm going to have to. Such a shame.

Unfortunately can't choose zero stars

We have been with Skinny for 8 years as loyal customers. Our modem stopped working, we were without internet. We requested a new modem. We sent the old modem back in the bag provided. We were not asked to provide evidence of sending it back. We did not get a tracking number, and did not have to pay for postage. We have been charged $199 for the faulty modem not showing up. They will refund us if we prove we sent it, which isn't possible (they gave us the bag for postage, and we did not get a tracking number). We tried to appeal with common sense - we have been paying reliably for years and will move due to the unfairness of this situation. It's daylight robbery. The internet service is bad anyway, and they are willing to throw many years of reliable $185+ phone and internet payments to take $199 off us for a faulty modem. Their company motto is: "We'll do anything to keep prices low & customers happy".

Dreadful Experience

If there was a zero star rating I would be giving skinny zero. The worst experience I have ever had with a utility supplier. I wish I had never heard of them. We took over our sons account when he moved out of our house to go overseas and we moved back in from being away. I should have taken notice with the difficulty we had in doing this. However we did the change over- for an unlimited VDSL account. However I recently discover they are charging me $176 a month when they told me the cost would be $73/month. When I tried to ring them they claimed I didn't answer the authentication questions correctly so wouldn't tell me why they were taking the $176 from my account. Its fraud and I anticipate complaining to the Commerce Commission, and possibly taking them to the small claims court- if they don't resolve the matter very shortly. and what's more I never get the invoices because they must send them to the wrong address.
Wondered about contacting the broadcasting standards authority and complaining about skinny's false advertising

Dire and pathetic!

I thought Spark was bad enough but Skinny really takes the cake. Their call waiting time is 60 mins and someone answers after that time but you get cut off. They offer messaging system via Messenger but the person on the other side does NOT address your query and wait times are beyond belief.

All I need is my acc number which isn’t displayed in any of the invoices. What kind of 💩 are they playing at. That’s it. I’ve had it with them.

WORST INTERNET COMPANY IN NZ

If you want an extremely appalling internet connection and shitty customer service, then skinny is the one.
Worst support ever, modem is crap, sooo many problems with dropoff/dropout and they couldn't care less, my smart TV no longer connects and same with my security cameras.
I'd rather get cancer then a contract with skinny. I'd rate Negative 5stars if possible!

Cheap, but you get what you pay for

I have for unlimited broadband only, and as far as the internet service goes - it is much worse than Orcon (I was with them for many years before Skinny). The internet connection drops regularly, as other reviewers have stated - comes back by itself after a couple of mins, but it's frustrating. HOWEVER - I still rate 3 stars because they are almost half the price we were paying with Orcon for unlimited broadband, and you get what you pay for. For phone customer service - be aware that you have to call within business hours and will almost certainly be on hold for ages if you choose to wait. You get a quicker response by leaving a phone number for them to call back. Once talking to staff service is fine. Billing is interesting compared to Orcon - Skinny debit monthly from your account and if money isn't there you won't get a warning or notice period - you are just immediately disconnected. If outside business hours you won't be able to sort out straight away either. Overall though - I am happy to stay for the price, it's a budget price and a budget product.

Poor communication

Their customer service on the phone is great but everything to do with their chatbot and email correspondence leave much to be desired! They don't respond to emails and don't seem to communicate across these platforms either.
