Successful Cuillin 2-day Traverse
Successful Cuillin 2-day Traverse. A friend and I had been planning to enjoy a traverse of the Cuillin and for one reason and another we had to postpone our attempt. Nate could not have been more accommodating and kept our booking open. We finally agreed a date for April 26. Someone was smiling on us as we hit a high pressure stationary over the west coast: we had blue skies, not a puff of wind and at that time of year no midges, so set for a good couple of days. Our trip was made all the more special by Nate. He is an exceptional guide with outstanding knowledge of the Cuillin and its many quirks. Within a few minutes of meeting him I had total confidence in him and was sure we would have a successful traverse. He listened to what we wanted to achieve: success yes, but more importantly to enjoy the experience of being on the mountain and helped us make sensible decisions on the route. As a result we achieved the traverse and all 11 Munros and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. On top of it all Nate is good company and a pleasure to spend time with in a magnificent environment.
I bumped into Nate at the top of Bruach…
I bumped into Nate at the top of Bruach na Frithe last year and listened to some positive comments from his clients. Later in the year I asked him to take me up the 8 Cuillin munros I'd still to climb. He suggested 2 per day with a rest day in the middle - recovery time for some one in his 70s. The weather was mixed and one day was lost to the wind and likely ice on the tops. I formed an opinion about Nate very quickly. I had complete trust in his ability to get me up and down safely and never felt at risk, even remarkably on the In Pin which we climbed in perfect weather on the last day. He was clear what he wanted me to do and gave encouragement where needed. He was also very good company, important when spending so much time together, and that turned the whole exercise into an iconic experience for me. I'll be looking to Nate to get me up the remaining 2 and I'd definitely recommend him.
Fantastic Cuillin guide
I think what Nate does well is tune into the person he is with and gauge their strengths and abilities well. This means that any technical difficulties ahead are explained in advance, he gives clear instructions and if you forget, he calmly reminds you. Never are you made to feel inadequate or incompetent. In fact, he instills confidence and belief in hillwalkers who have very basic climbing experience. An excellent guide who I would highly recommend.
If you're looking for a brilliant guide look no further than Skye Mountaineering!!
Skye Mountaineering and Nate in particular is just five star! He is my go to guide for anything that I require technical support for. He is a lovely guy, fantastic guide, very well qualified and his attention to detail and safety is second to none. I have walked many technical hills in Scotland with Nate that require ropes, abseiling and detailed instructions for a non climber and he has just been excellent. I organised a group trip to Skye and Skye mountaineering were also able to provide a number of guides that could support a group of 8 walkers. I can't recommend him or his company highly enough.
I recently had the pleasure of climbing…
I recently had the pleasure of climbing in the Skye Cuillin with Nate as my guide. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Nate demonstrated outstanding professionalism from start to finish, making me feel safe and well-supported at all times.
His deep local knowledge of the Cuillin range was especially impressive.Nate knew the routes, conditions, and terrain inside out, which made a real difference to both the safety and enjoyment of the climb. He was also great at explaining techniques and adapting to my pace, striking the perfect balance between challenge and encouragement.
Overall, I’d highly recommend Nate to anyone looking to explore the Cuillin with a skilled and reliable guide. It was a memorable and rewarding experience thanks to his expertise.

A relaxed atmosphere with great support and encouragement from our guide Nate. I would definitely recommend Skye Mountaineering.
Sugar nan Gillian
Had an excellent day on Sgurr Nan Gillian and Am Basteir, Nate had an excellent calm approach that gave me the confidence to complete the route that I would not otherwise have attempted, highly recommended.
Had a brilliant two days walking
Had a brilliant two days walking with Nate and Harrison. Had to abandon the Inn Pinn due to poor weather but they next day completed Sgurr Nan Guillian and Am Basteir. The weather was perfect and the company was good. Nate was very good at guiding me on my first abseil. Really enjoyed my weekend and hope to return to complete the other Cuillin.
The Inn Pinn
Had a superb experience climbing the Inaccessible Pinnacle with Nate.
Nate’s experience shone through and was knowledgeable and personable - we had an incredible time. Would thoroughly recommend Skye Mountaineering. We will be back!
Topping out in sub-optimal weather
Dealing with Nate who runs Skye Mountaineering has been easy and a very professional experience from start to finish. Our guide, Adam, was very supportive, flexible calm and encouraging and enabled myself and my companion for the day to safely reach our goal of Sgùrr MhicChoinnich and the In Pinn on a day of what Adam termed "sub-optimal weather conditions"!
As a client, you are really well looked after by Skye Mountaineering. I have no hesitation in recommending them.
Exceptional experience on the In Pinn
Had an exceptional morning on the Inaccessible Pinnacle with Nate in early September. The conditions were variable, but after demonstrating experience scrambling and our confidence levels, Nate permitted us to make a decision as to whether to proceed with the Pinn.
As well as being very personable, Nate is very experienced in leading guided climbs and is amongst Scotland's top mountaineering guides. If you are looking to do any guided hiking/climbing in Scotland, I would highly recommend Skye Mountaineering. 10/10 experience.
Great day
Due to weather conditions the guide changed in the last minute the trekking and so we could enjoy our day! Very professional guide and organisation.
two great days in Skye
My two teenage grandsons and I spent two days out and about with Nate, Harrison joined us for the second day.
Day one as an intro to the mountains of Skye we hiked up Blaven We met up at Slig early and by 8.30 we had parked up by Loch Slapin and were on the first part of the footpath. It was a glorious day and we followed the burn up to a Coire and from there a scrambly path to the top. Great views of the Cullin Ridge one way and out to sea the other - back to the car and time for an ice cream . Nate showed the lads all kinds of features on the walk and really engaged with them.
Next day we were joined by Harrison and we went rock climbing on the sea cliffs in the north of the Island near Staffin. What a day - Nate and Harrison talked us through all the safety procedures, kitted us out with helmets, boots and a harness each and then off we went- abseiling down the cliff to the start of the clim.
We had a great time doing a variety of routes in a fantastic isolated place. We just loved it. Nate and Harrison have a way about them which is both serious about safety but at the same time fun.
Can't recommend these guys enough
Great days out with highly experienced guides
Our family of four had a brilliant 2 days in the Cuillins with Skye Mountaineering. Jack took the four of us up the In Pinn and really looked after the young ones who don’t have a lot of climbing experience. They loved it. The second day Jack and Harrison took us on a longer and more challenging route, which we completed before the weather set in. We had a blast.
2 Days in the Cullins
I was supposed to do a Cullin traverse with Nate, but he advised against it after closely monitoring the weather, and we decided to do two separate days. It turned out Nate made a great call and we did a lot despite two days of foggy wet weather. Nate was great at laying out options so that even without the full traverse I met many of my objectives for the trip, including the InPin, which we accomplished during our one dry-weather window. I found Nate to be a great companion for two days, and I really appreciated his calm demeanor and clear instructions on the more technical climbing sections, which gave me the confidence to just do it. Nate is a very knowledgeable and highly competent mountain guide, whom I highly recommend for your foray into the Cullins.
Cuillin Adventure
Had a fantastic 2 day guided adventure in the Cuillin. Whilst the ambition had been for a full traverse, the weather didn't play ball. However, Nate ensured that I had the most fun and safe experience possible, and I had such a great time. Climbing the In-Pinn was a real mountain-top moment, and the abseiling around the Northern summits added extra adventure. Nate ensured that the pace was right for me throughout, and provided helpful and encouraging pointers to develop my scrambling/climbing skills. Definitely recommend a trip with Skye Mountaineering!
Amazing hiking experience on Skye
A group of 8 women had the most incredible 3 days on Skye largely do to our guide Nate. From my first conversation where he listened to gain understanding of our experience and goals, to his expertise and knowledge of the terrain, weather, history, all while keeping us challenged but safe during 3 days of hiking, made for a most enjoyable trip to Skye. He kept us informed of weather changes and was flexible with times and trails. It was a bucket list trip that met every expectation. We will definitely want to have him guide our group again for future hikes.
A fantastic days guided climbing on the Cullin ridge with Adam
We had an awesome day out on the Cullins with guide Adam Clarke. The Inn Pinn and SMC were the days objective but in lead up to the day the forecast was changing constantly and the possibility of doing these 2 peaks was on some doubt. Luckily a window of opportunity opened up and a short period of dry calm weather was being predicted. Our guide Adam had clearly been studying the forecast carefully as we were asked if we could bring our original start time forward to beat the rain forecast for later in the day. This turned out to be a stroke of genius. We were picked up from Sligachan campsite and by Adam in his mobile home/office and arrived bright and early at Glen Brittle for 7am. We set off at pace and arrived at the base of the Inn Pinn in a few hours just behind the first party that were about to make the ascent. Adam, was very clear and concise with his instructions and made as feel relaxed and at ease as it was possible to be as we ascended the Pinn. He then skillfully set us up and guided on the abseil off the short end. Adam was good at taking action photos throughout that he forwarded on to us later so that we had a brilliant photographic record of our day and memories to look back on. Adam was safety consious throughout the day making sure we were roped up if he felt it was necessary and even avoided some sections that may have exposed us to possible rock fall from other climbers above us. The scramble onto SMC posed different challenges to the InnPinn but Adam guided us expertly up, around and down all obstacles with a calm assurance that made us feel at ease throughout the day. With the tricky stuff done we enjoyed a quick exit off the ridge down the scree chutes into Choire Laggan and back down to Glen Brittle with the previously mentioned forecasted rain arriving only minutes before we got back to the van.
A fantastic guide and overall experience with Skye Mountaineering that I would be more than happy to climb with again in the future. Once my nerves and body have recovered from the latest expedition!!
Great communication from start to finish…
Great communication from start to finish with Nate at Skye Mountaineering. Nearer the time of the trip in the Cuillin he put us in contact with our guide Adam Clarke.
With weather forecast looking awful, gale force winds and rain, various other routes were made a possibility or was given the chance to re schedule which seemed the safer and better option and opportunity for the initial plan of the Inn Pin and Sgurr Mhic Choinnich.
As the re arranged date arrived, Adam was back in touch offering time options for starting day, with meeting earlier possibly paying dividends. Adam picked us up from the campsite . A very polite and friendly bloke. On the ascent of Sgurr Dearg, we swapped stories of our hills experience and he was very informative regarding the different types of rock on the cuillin and the various traverses.
Adam was very safety conscious and made sure we we were roped up when necessary offering us tips and suggestion for this tricky parts of the day.
With leaving early we had blue skies all the way and ascent of teh Inn Pin, we then had a rolling mist but still had clear views throughout the traverse to and from SMC, only starting to spit rain as we arrived back at the car. the early start was well planned
Fantastic guide and overall experience with Skye Mountaineering.
We had an incredible time climbing In…
We had an incredible time climbing In Pinn with Murph. We were very lucky with the weather as the clouds cleared for the perfect amount of time for us to summit! A day that will live long in the memory. Murph was excellent - capable and reassuring and just good company. Well organised. Would definitely recommend
