Its More than a Screenwriting course

After watching lots of writing videos on YouTube landed up on Ankit Kothari's YouTube channel. Loved the content & enrolled myself in the foundation course.

One of the best decisions of my life. After attending most of the sessions I can say that it's a very well-designed course. Starting from Idea generation to rewriting. Every module is discussed in detail with assignments, film screenings & group discussions clearing the concepts.

Best thing is that generally the videos/ books available on screenwriting takes refence from foreign films. But in this course maximum references are from Indian movies ( both short / feature), which makes learning more easier.

The continuous guidance inculcated a sense of self belief in me & gave me confidence to continue my journey as a writer.

Highly recommended.

"Transformative Screenwriting Course with Ankit: Expert Instruction and Unmatched Support"

I recently completed a screenplay writing course with Ankit, and I can’t recommend it enough. Ankit has a remarkable ability to break down complex concepts into easily understandable lessons, making even the most challenging aspects of screenwriting accessible. His teaching style is thorough and detail-oriented, ensuring that every nuance of the craft is covered.

One of Ankit’s greatest strengths is his unwavering support. He never gives up on his students, consistently pushing us to achieve our best and keeping us motivated throughout the course. His commitment to our individual progress is evident in the way he follows up on our development and provides personalized feedback.

Ankit also excels at inspiring us to set clear, precise goals and to stay focused on our journey. His dedication to tracking our progress and his insightful guidance have been instrumental in helping us refine our skills and grow as screenwriters. If you’re looking for a course that combines expert instruction with genuine encouragement and support, Ankit’s class is the perfect choice.

You only pay to watch him promote his paid course

Unless you are complete gullible noob, this storython teaches you nothing. The advertisement on Instagram says 'we'll decode all writing techniques' but delivers absolutely nothing. I enrolled to learn writing techniques. Not some feel good motivation about being a writer. Tested my patience as to when he will talk about writing techniques of Maharaja. In the less than 1 hr he spoke about writing, they were just basics you'll find in any YouTube video on screenwriting. Nothing worth paying him at all. These sessions are just elaborate advertisment to join the paid courses they offer and talks almost nothing about writing. It felt like a lazy school teacher skipping to teach the topic saying 'you will study about this topic in higher classes but join my private tution classes if you want to learn now'. YouTube videos were far more informative than this storython. How can you even ask people to rate you on this website and comment on Instagram while the session is still on? How manipulative is that man. Please don't bother to justify by replying to this.

Honest Feedback!

What went wrong:

- The workshop focused more on providing motivation rather than teaching practical writing techniques, which was my primary expectation.
- A considerable amount of time was spent promoting the advanced course, interrupting the learning process.
- The instructor used the movie Maharaja as a key example throughout the workshop but did not inform participants to watch it beforehand. As I hadn’t seen the movie, it was difficult for me to understand some points.
- Significant time was devoted to promoting a “Habit Tracking” course, which felt unrelated to the main purpose of the workshop.
- During more than 30-minute promotion for the advanced course, I privately messaged the team requesting to move forward with the lesson and save promotions for the end. Instead of addressing my concern, my messages were deleted twice by a team member, which felt dismissive.
- The workshop content that I learned could have been covered within two hours. The rest of the time was spent on motivation and promotions, which wasn’t what I signed up for.
- Participants were asked to leave a review on Trustpilot during the workshop itself, which felt manipulative.

What could be improved:

- Please value everyone’s time. Although I didn’t ask for a refund, I appreciate it. However, it doesn’t recover the time I invested.
- Limit the time spent on promotions and motivation to a maximum of 10%, and consider keeping these segments separate. This allows students to decide if they want to engage with them without feeling overwhelmed. Otherwise, it can feel like a burden.

Reply from Ankit Kothari - Storython

Hey Darshan,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I genuinely appreciate your insights, as they help me refine and improve the workshops for all participants.

On the Practical Writing Techniques:

During the workshop, we covered several practical writing techniques, including LogLine, 2 Scenes Breakdown (ACR), MidPoint, 6 techniques for Protagonist, 3 techniques for Antagonist, 4 techniques for Visual Motif, and an explanation of Non-Linear Writing.

Downloadable worksheets for these techniques were also provided. These methods are part of my intellectual property, developed over years of experience. If this content didn’t meet your expectations at a cost of Rs299, I’m unsure how else to offer more value. Dont you feel, not only the coach, the participant also has a moral obligation to appreciate the effort and resources spent ?

Regarding “Kahaniyoon ki Marathon" with Maharaja:

The title itself, clearly communicated that the film would be a central part of our discussions. Watching the movie was logical and expected for anyone serious about learning to decode stories. 200 participants had seen it, and many even rewatched it after I suggested it on day one. This has never happened in the previous 4 film marathons.

On the Habit and Mindset Focus:

We were fortunate to have a professional OTT writer join us to share the importance of habit and mindset—crucial tools for any aspiring writer. I believe in this deeply and practice it myself, and I’ll continue to emphasize it in future sessions to encourage writers to REWRITE and GROW

Addressing the Disruption:

I noticed that even after requesting you were consistently messaging during the session, which was distracting and took my focus away from delivering the content smoothly. These long messages disrupted the experience for the other 200 writers as well, and unfortunately, we had to remove them to maintain the flow of the session.

Workshop Duration and Value:

You mentioned that the content could have been covered in 2 hours, yet you attended both days, totalling over 9 hours of participation. This suggests that there was more engagement than what might be reflected in your review. Regarding the promotional segment, I limited it to just 30 minutes out of the entire 9-hour session, adhering to the 10% guideline you suggested.

Encouragement and Transparency:

I’ve always encouraged transparency, and many participants have shared the techniques they learned in their Trustpilot reviews. I clearly communicated this, and only those who felt comfortable did so. Without attending this session also, by reading the reviews and googling participants can learn. That is a part of my mission.

Invitation to Future Sessions:

As a filmmaker and writer, my goal is to share what I’ve learned and empower others to write better. If there’s anything else I can do to add value, please feel free to email me at connect@storython.co.

I also welcome you to join our next session at no additional cost. You’re free to mute any parts you’re not interested in, but I ask for some empathy for a fellow writer who is genuinely trying to help others learn, do, and share.

logline

Yesterday, I learned a few new things about screenplay writing process especially, about how easily we can write a logline and it's importance. There are so many books and websites on the topic, but I was always confused. However, it all became clear to me yesterday
