Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 675 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with the customer service, citing unhelpful interactions and difficulty reaching representatives who could resolve their issues. Reviewers frequently reported problems with payments, including issues with automatic payments not processing correctly, unexpected late fees, and difficulties making payments through various methods. A common concern was the bank's practice of lowering credit limits without clear reasons, even for customers with good payment histories, which negatively impacted their credit scores. Some people also felt that the company's policies, such as those related to interest charges and account closures, were unfair and led to unexpected financial burdens. Additionally, several customers experienced problems with fraudulent charges and found the resolution process to be inadequate.

I paid off the highest balance I had…

I paid off the highest balance I had with this company which was $17,000 and two weeks later I got a letter saying they were closing my other account with them because of too much revolving debt. The account they closed on me was always paid on time & I hadn't used the card the closed on me in over a month.
TERRIBLE COMPANY think twice before getting a card with them.

I applied for a Synchrony bank credit…

I applied for a Synchrony bank credit card and they sent me a letter requesting additional information. When I called the "800"number and tried to give the person the additional information and tried to explain to her that I was having difficulty with the process she kept interrupting me when I was trying to explain the problem I was having. She made a frustrating situation even more frustrating.

This is absolutely the worst company…

This is absolutely the worst company I've ever dealt with. They find a way to charge you interest even when you make statement balance payments in full. If you have a promo balance with Amazon card, BEWARE. They will apply your regular account payments to your interest free balance and then charge your regular account interest without you even knowing. Their customer service agents are horrible and you might as well be dealing with a robot. I will never do business with any merchant again that aligs with Synchrony bank!

What a terrible customer service…

What a terrible customer service experience. I hope you never run into an issue with your card, because getting anything resolved is nearly impossible. They failed to send me the physical card for over two months, yet continued charging late fees and mailing statements. Since the physical card is required to create an account and make payments, I had no way to access or pay the bill. Talked to 7 people on their customer service line and they all had no idea how to help with basic requests.

Terrible non existent customer service

I recently purchased a mini split heat pump for my house. The company that made the installation was listed as a project partner with Synchrony bank and offered 18 month interest free financing. This would have enabled me to have funds for another major project so I applied for a Synchrony credit card. I did make a mistake in the online application and was immediately rejected as a "high risk application source." And that's it you can't talk to a real person via their phone system and they don't have any offices (anywhere in the US as far as I can tell) where you can go in and resolve application issues. I asked the business doing the install for help and they could offer none. So despite having a credit score in the 800s and a low 6 figure retirement income I was forced to pay the full amount in cash. I see from the thousands of other reviews I'm not an outlier. Would give zero stars if I could.

As a bank they are ok but as a financing tool like credit cars for companies they are scary. It doesnt allow you to make a payment through the app. I was able to make a payment on their website. So because they had made payments difficult, I closed all lf the accounts. i am relieved that had zero balances.

they did not mail the bill

I am an attorney and have worked hard to maintain excellent credit for many years. Synchrony Bank, which services At Home credit cards, handled a $34 balance in a way that I believe was unfair and unacceptable.
For the past 30 years, my bookkeeper has handled bills through mailed invoices. Synchrony Bank did not mail me an invoice for this balance. Instead, they admitted they sent notice only by email, which is not how my bills are managed and is exactly the type of communication that can be missed, filtered, or buried in spam.
When I contacted Synchrony Bank, they initially would not acknowledge that the bill had been sent only by email. After I pushed for a clear answer, they finally admitted that no paper invoice had been mailed.
I paid the $34 balance and immediately cancelled the card. No customer should have their credit put at risk over a small balance that was never mailed in the normal billing manner. When I went to post this complaint, I saw more than 2,000 one-star complaints about Synchrony Bank, which makes it clear that my experience is not an isolated one.

I never thought I would be writing…

I never thought I would be writing something like this, but I want people to understand what happened to me with Synchrony Bank.

I started with a simple Amazon card and built trust with Synchrony over time by doing everything the right way. I made my payments on time, managed my accounts responsibly, and worked hard to build my credit.

As life moved forward, Synchrony continued approving me for more accounts and increasing my limits because of my good history with them. I financed dental work to take care of my health and they eventually raised that limit to $20,000. When my wife became pregnant, we opened a Mattress Firm account so we could finally get a comfortable mattress for us and prepare for sleepless nights with a baby on the way. They approved another $20,000 limit.

We opened a Discount Tire account because we needed safe tires and reliable transportation for our growing family. Later, after moving into a new apartment and welcoming our baby, we opened an Ashley account where again we got accepted for another $20,000 limit so we could furnish our home and create a comfortable space for our child.

None of this was reckless spending to me. This was real life. Building a home. Taking care of my wife. Preparing for our baby. Trying to be responsible and provide for my family.

Through every single account, I never missed a payment.

Then without warning, Synchrony closed all of my accounts and labeled me as a “high risk of failure to pay.”

Reading those words honestly hurt. After years of being responsible and loyal, it felt like none of it mattered. The same company that trusted me enough to extend large credit limits suddenly decided I was too risky despite never failing them.

What hurts even more is the damage this caused to my credit. Overnight, a huge portion of my available credit disappeared, hurting my utilization and negatively affecting the credit I worked so hard to build.

I understand banks can make business decisions, but this experience left me extremely disappointed. It’s hard not to feel betrayed when you spend years proving yourself financially responsible only to be treated like a liability anyway.

I’m sharing this because consumers deserve to know that even if you always pay on time and do everything correctly, your accounts can still be shut down without warning based on internal risk

I am not a fan

I am not a fan. I seem to run into non-stop issues and when I call to request assistance, I always have had a poor experience. I now check the carrier of a card to ensure that it is not owned by Synchrony Bank to avoid interactions as much as possible.

I opened a credit card with this bank…

I opened a credit card with this bank at TJ Maxx then about a month later I went to go pay off the card but wasn’t able to pay at the register I was hit with too late fee charges that came out to $100 and on top of that when dealing with their customer service trying to pay it off, they were more concerned with getting my information rather than helping me cancel overall a very poor experience. I recommend you stay away from opening any cards here.

Synchrony bank is the worst

Synchrony bank is the worst. They lower your credit limit so close to your limit that it really hurts your credit score and they do this without notify you. Try to call and talk to them you get someone in a foreign country and all you get is excuses. You try to talk with the company whom your credit card is with and they give you back to Synchrony. This is a mafia style run bank with the main purpose of screwing its customers. They don't care about you. Don't get involved with them

Synchrony is a SCAM!!!

Synchrony is a SCAM!!!! Be WARNED!! They are stalking from people in a daylight! Three of my accounts were closed without notice. I never failed to pay my balance not once, but they closed and even though they’re still taking my money on Auto pay, they have reinstated the original balance of & more. I was close to paying off balances, but they closed my account and locked my access.

My credit score abs reputation has been ruined by these scams. Be careful what they offer in the stores , begging you almost to open an account,…the intention is for them to make money off of your ignorance. They should be BANNED FROM OPERATING BUSINESS!!!

Ten times more indifferent than any other major credit card

While with my Son on his business trip in Pennsyvania, I called the Lowes back in Lansing Michigan where I live. Chose a pellet grill, expensive enough that a 5% reduction for using my CC was worthwhile. Surprised to find Synchrony had closed my account w/o notice because I "wasn't using it enough". Tried to apply online and OMG the hoops they expect you to jump through!! including a facial scan. Their frigging App never could scan my bearded face and when I said I was in Allentown, my app was summarily denied. Got a letter a week later asking me to contact them to finish the application. Told their rep I wasn't interested.

Stay far away from Synchrony Bank

Incredibly horrible bank to deal with as a retail consumer. They take drastic actions such as closing accounts with no warning or looking into issues. This can and does have a drastic effect on your credit scores. Do not use this bank if you value your lifetime achievements in cultivating a great credit rating. I wish I had checked their reviews earlier. They are known for it and it's common knowledge. They have incredibly horrible reviews.

Dear Synchrony Bank is $#!+

Credit is extended by Synchrony Bank, which is located at 170 Election Road, Suite 125, Draper, UT

To whom it may concern, please reconsider before opening a new PayPal Credit account with #synchrony @synchronybank if you value time, sanity & fico.

The experience with Synchrony Bank PayPal Credit has easily been the worst from a objective point of view. This bank arbitrarily lowered the line of credit multiple times, although the credit account was in good standing to that point. This didn't end the world, just a bit of wasted time after multiple occurrences.

The credit line was dropped while PayPal subsequently chose to charge the incorrect account, at the wrong bank. This is when PayPal was not set to use that bank account by default, and was never selected to be used. In fact, the PayPal Credit account was previously paid with a 20+ year old bank account which was predominately used for the PayPal Credit account in question.

Due to this glitch that appears to have been on the side of Synchrony and/or PayPal, the bank then applied a "return charge fee" for this systematic error. To be clear, I never chose the account that was selected when attempting to pay the PayPal Credit account. This whole process then repeated again only one week later, and that secondary "return charge fee" was also refunded in "the name of good customer service". Now this is more of an insult, or a joke.

Synchrony subsequently closed the PayPal Credit account entirely, after the line of credit was lowered, and stated this was due to the "return charge fee", which both had been refunded. Synchrony advised contacting PayPal to get them to furnish some form of proof, in which PayPal refused to provide. Mind you, this is because I had n say in which account was charged in these two occasions and the customer support was less than helpful.

Further, I've had multiple accounts with Synchrony, among many other groups and none of which have ever had such an issue before. This includes a PayPal Mastercard, also provided by the same Synchrony Bank which is still in good standing today. Synchrony & PayPal both point the finger at the other while neither offer any real assistance. Well I'm now offering you the finger. Thanks.
