Still as good as 2013....

A blast from the past but we still have a working Gazelle Professional ( gazp9 ) from 2013. We got a new 2025 model and thus far been very happy; its runs as stable as before.

System76 is a company that cares about consumers

I love System76 for its commitment to right to repair and right to own and because they encourage and help users get the setup that they want.

I bought the laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled since they don't offer the option of no having any OS preinstalled and I quickly found how to setup their specific drivers in Arch from their own website, even though they don't support it officially. I believe this is the example to follow.

The process was seamless and quick. The quality of the hardware rivals that of brands such as HP and Dell. But, more important than that is the pro-consumer pro-free software philosophy.

I give 4 stars and not 5 for 2 reasons. First, please, offer the option of no OS. That would be awesome. Second, and more important, I received the laptop with an American plug. If you are going to ship to the UK, please, bundle a UK plug and not an American one. Luckily, I had one lying around from my previous laptop which I could connect to the provided charger.

No instructions and this is different than any other machine I have ever had. How do I change the font and the color of the letters when I am making a power point production? I am still pretty confused. How do I get help?

The computer made banging sounds when I…

The computer made banging sounds when I tried to boot it up. Then it shut down. Tech support couldn't get it to boot up either. I had to email the CEO to expedite an RMA. Slow to give me a partial refund after they received the computer back in the same condition they sent it to me. I have some advice for them to improve but I am waiting for a full refund.

I'm getting a firmware update…

I'm getting a firmware update announcement that won't be satisfied, I've updated and restarted about ten times now and it still pops up.
Now, when I close the laptop lid, I expect it to go to sleep or shut down, and when I reopen it, it's locked up with a whole screen full of "Failed to sync, bluetooth" I didn't copy the exact message yet. And it won't respond to any keys, I have to perform a manual shutdown with the off key and then push the off key again and wait for a restart.

Almost Perfect

Initially, my support ticket went unnoticed.
I contacted System76 by Facebook Messenger to inquire about it, and received a reply and apology promptly.
It was smooth sailing after that.

Great Job

Jordi and Stetson helped me resolve a boot issue. The machines are high quality and durable, and the service is excellent. You pay a premium with System 76, and I wish all the machines had a completely open firmware option. However, the price is worth it to avoid as much DRM as humanly possible.

This is a great business. I will use them again and recommend them to friends.

One minor issue noticed, and they moved Heaven and Earth to make it right!

Issues, happen with all products, but System76 went out of their way to accommodate my travel schedule and my need for a replacement machine while traveling for work. Unfortunately I received a laptop with a dead pixel on it, and it was driving me insane. I saw the issue on Friday, but I had to catch a flight Tuesday afternoon and would be out of town for quite some time. Although their office was closed for the weekend, come monday morning, I received follow-ups from multiple people, and I had a replacement on the way to where I was staying by Tuesday. Awesome customer service, and the replacement has been top-notch and running without any issues.

This is a company who understands their end-users, and are building well thought out products for them. The ability to swap and add drives and ram in a laptop is also amazing. This is a computer company founded out of everyone's frustration of vendor lock-in, proprietary parts and code, and being forced to accept whatever was on the shelves of the big box stores at the time. System76 decided to go against the norm, and as a first time user, I'm pretty sure that I'm now a lifetime customer.

Excellent Ubuntu machine.

1. Worked out-of-the-box
2. As powerful as my old leopard at a fraction of the price.
3. Occupies a tiny footprint of the leopard and weighs a small fraction of it.
4. It will be interesting to see how it stands up to time. I had the leopard well over 10 years.

Positives & Negatives

Positives - the unit looks nice, is solidly built and after a good bit of help from a friend it is operational.
Negatives - the unit arrived with the video card unseated. Having not worked with this box or type of box before, I reached out to System76 for help. The very generic response - re-seat the card - did not provide details on how to even get to the card. The box isn't a simple design and very detailed instructions should be provided. Considering response times exceed 24 hours between requests I cannot give better than a three rating at this time.
