CRAMMED
The car park was crammed, the restaurant was crammed and my small plate was crammed.
My wife wanted a break from cooking Sunday lunch so here we were on the road from Honiton to Sidmouth at a favourite eatery, the 'Hare and Hounds', and so were more than a hundred and fifty other hungry Sunday lunchers. Some of them had 'eyes bigger than their tummies', as a lot of taken food was obviously destined for the bin.
So back to my small plate. Well it wasn't that small as the slicing chef gave me the requested turkey- it was a chunk and a slice-and I added five more veggies, a sausage, stuffing and a 'slice' of gravy in which the dishing out ladle was standing vertical. Not a light lunch by any means, but we both cleared our plates, having moved back some inches from the table.
Our table was booked for 2.30 and we had our first mouthfuls at 3.15, but there was plenty to look at and we talked to others who come here regularly, particularly for Sunday lunch. The quality of the food was excellent and with our two drinks our small plate carveries came to around £48. Fair enough, but for readers who can't stand noise and bustle this is not for you.
I think there must have been a staff of ten out front and probably the same out the back maintaining all the dishes of turkey, beef, ham and all the veggies. You check in at the bar which is also serving drinks of course, so there was a ten minute wait to check in for my table reservation. The staff were all cheerful busy, polite and as attentive as there was time so to be.
The place was warm, toilets spotless a comprehensive menu choice but most were having the carvery. Disabled access was easy throughout but I only saw one disabled space in the large, rear, untarmacked carpark.
So will we return? Certainly, but probably not for Sunday lunch. Weekday prices are less than those at weekends. This is a sound and well managed business.
