Deeply Disappointing Experience
Deeply Disappointing Experience from Start to Finish -
Our visit to The Hunloke Arms was supposed to be a birthday celebration for our child. Instead, it became a masterclass in how to alienate paying customers at every possible step.
The problems began before we even arrived. Ten minutes—yes, ten minutes—before our confirmed 18:30 booking, the restaurant unilaterally changed our reservation time. No explanation. No apology. No courtesy. Just a blunt, last‑minute email informing us that the time had been altered. For a venue that prides itself on “warm people,” this was an early warning that warmth was in short supply.
Unfortunately, the evening only deteriorated from there.
Left Standing for 20 Minutes
Despite having a booking (at either time), we were left standing awkwardly near the entrance for twenty minutes while staff “sorted out” our table. No communication. No reassurance. No sense that anyone cared that this was a family occasion, let alone a birthday meal for a child.
Patchy, Slow, and Disconnected Service
Once seated, the service was a muddle of delays and mistakes.
• Drinks arrived incorrectly.
• Courses were slow and disjointed.
• Staff seemed disengaged and disorganised.
There was no flow, no attentiveness, and certainly no sense of hospitality.
Ignored at the End of the Meal -
When we finished, we were abandoned for another twenty minutes with no bill, no check‑in, and no acknowledgement. Eventually we gave up and walked to the bar to pay—because clearly no one intended to come to us.
A Combative, Unprofessional Barman -
What happened next was the final insult.
The barman—who had personally shown us to our table earlier—suddenly claimed he had no idea where we’d been seated. Instead of helping, he barked “Which table?” at my wife and told her to go and find out. His tone was rude, dismissive, and utterly devoid of basic customer service. When challenged, he shrugged it off with “I’m just bar, not involved in the rest,” as though that excused the attitude.
No apology.
No ownership.
No recognition of the poor service we’d endured.
Just hostility and indifference.
Overall?
What should have been a joyful family celebration became a frustrating, disheartening ordeal. From the last‑minute booking change to the chaotic service and the combative behaviour of staff, the entire experience fell far below even the most modest expectations.
We won’t be returning, and I would strongly caution others to think twice before booking.
