A big thank you to Mark/Total Loss Gap for their professionalism, honesty and excellent customer service.

Although I purchased Alloy Wheel & Tyre insurance, which was a great product, when I talked it through with Mark, he suggested that one of his competitors products might better meet all my needs. There were only minor differences, but I cancelled without any issue.

So a big thank you to Mark/Total Loss Gap for their professionalism, honesty and excellent customer service.

I telephone total loss gap for advice…

I telephone total loss gap for advice on their Gap insurance products and had the pleasure of speaking to Mark. I had been given a quote via a main dealership and wanted to compare products. Mark was extremely knowledgeable about all the products which made feel at ease and gave me peace of mind in the company and their products.
Mark was very friendly and answered all my queries which made me 100% certain to purchase Gap Insurance from Total Loss and not the main dealership who had tried pressure selling a product which was not suitable for my circumstances.
I highly recommend a chat to Mark if you need any advice as his 15 years experience shone through and was reassuring together with excellent customer service.

I took out a policy with Total Loss Gap…

I took out a policy with Total Loss Gap for Alloy Wheel Insurance and Cosmetic Damage Insurance. Total Loss Gap are more of a broker and my insurance as actually with Spectrum.

Unfortunately I had to make a claim but it was dealt with really quickly by Spectrum. Their own alloy wheel repairs company couldn't match the colour of my alloys so Spectrum gave me the option to find my own repairer. I did this and they sent me a cheque a week or so later to cover the cost.

After 9 months, I sold the car so called Total Loss Gap to either cancel the policy or move it to another car. Unfortunately they couldn't move the policy as the replacement car was purchased privately instead of via a main dealership. I was also told that normally I'd get a pro rata refund but as there was a claim on a policy this won't happen. I did a bit of maths and worked out that it would have actually been cheaper for me to have not had the insurance and paid for the repair myself! A fairer way to handle this would have been to have had a pro rata refund less any costs of claims. I called Total Loss Gap back and explained this and they could see my point so raised the question with Spectrum.

A few hours later, Total Loss Claims called me back to inform me that Spectrum had agreed with what I had said and were prepared to refund me the difference less the admin charges (£35 at time of writing).

Any company who can see where something might be not quite right and are prepared to legitimately look in to it and correct it where possible, is a company I would like to deal with again and Total Loss Gap demonstrated that they are such a company. I will be contacting them in the future should I need any more of the services that they provide.

Dear Mr Khan, Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention, however we are struggling to find any trace of a Mr Muhammad Aktar Khan on our database of customers. We have also checked with the claims team at Spectrum and they have no record of a claim being made against a policy in that name either.

Could you please contact our office via the Totallossgap.co.uk website so we can look into this for you.

Of course, it may be that you have a policy with someone else and if this is the case then we will do what we can to try to assist you in identifying who that may be with.

It seems cheap but there's a reason why

I purchased Tyre and Alloy insurance from TLG when I bought my one year old Volvo from a main dealer two years ago. Last Monday I had to take the car to the dealer for its first MOT and a service. Due to shielding I haven't even been into a shop since March, so this was a big deal, but I needed to keep the car legal as I need the car. I dropped it off in the morning and returned home. Later in the morning I received a phone call saying that on inspection one of the tyres had a deep cut and would fail the MOT unless it was replaced, so I agreed to this. I collected the car the next day. I have the inspection sheet from the dealer clearly indicating that the tyre could not be repaired and would fail the MOT. As I have a service plan, the labour to replace the tyre was provided free by the dealer, so I just had to pay for the tyre. Over the weekend I remembered that I had insurance and rang this morning to ask about the claims procedure. I was informed that I should have taken a photograph of the tyre in advance and that unless I could provide one then my claim wouldn't be entertained. I have asked the dealer and they no longer have the tyre. I have documentary evidence that the tyre needed to be replaced which I offered to photograph and send to TLG, this would have provided the name of the technician, the time and date of the inspection and the contact details for the dealership (a main dealership for Volvo), they weren't interested, all they could do was repeat their procedure. In these times most people are trying to find a way to get through life safely, be flexible and help people, alas not insurance companies it seems, quelle surprise!

Update - 17/11/20 About a month ago I received a phone call from TLG, wishing to investigate my experience. I was asked to forward the documentation which I had, proving that I had a valid claim. This done, I received another phone call, stating that the claim was indeed valid. I have subsequently received a cheque for my replacement tyre with an additional sum for a repair to another, which I hadn't sought in my initial claim (and which they were under no obligation to pay as I had not followed their standard procedure). Things can always go wrong and I feel that the measure of a company is how they respond. TLG have responded above my expectations and I am revising my rating to 4*

I’ve been with TLG for a number of years and having had low profile tyres have needed a couple of alloy repairs, a tyre replaced and a stone chip repair. TLG have been great, all repairs and replacements done speedily and without any fuss...just follow the process.
I’ve now changed my car and Mark has sorted me out with policies to cover all eventualities and considerably less cost than the dealer, at least half the price. I can highly recommend TLG and Mark who did all he could to help me out....nice work guys.

I can recommend the Alloy wheel cover but i was not happy with the Gap Insurance when wanting to change

I used Total Loss Gap and they gave a great price on my Gap insurance over 3 year's. I change my car with my policy had just over 10 months to run and when i got new quote for my new car they only offered me a £10 as a good will gesture off my new policy.
I also took out the Alloy wheel cover for diamond cut wheels and i had a claim and the claim and repair was sorted out within 2 weeks and i was well happy with the repair the wheel came back as new.

Dear Mr. Beeching, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We can see that you were unhappy with one aspect of the purchase of your GAP Insurance policy from Total Loss Gap and we would like to address that to explain. When you change your vehicle before the end of the policy term we have an option to simply transfer the balance of cover to your new vehicle free of charge. However, for a number of reasons, this may not be appropriate for your new vehicle. These can include the desire to have longer cover for your new vehicle, (when your old policy expires you may be outside the 180 day from vehicle purchase 'window' to buy new cover) or your new vehicle is more expensive than the old one (GAP Insurance premiums and risks rise with the increasing price of a vehicle).

The only other option is to cancel your old policy where a pro rata refund of premium is available, but this is less the insurers cancellation fee of £35. When you only have a few months left then this may mean you do not have much of a refund due back.

I understand that you were unhappy that only a £10 discount was provided against the cost of a new policy. I can assure you that this discount is not normal practice and was only authorised due to the situation and as you have bought products from us previously.

Our pricing strategy is such that we do not work with large margins. As such we are not able to offer 'discount codes' or alike. We prefer to offer you the best value each and every time. £10 may not seem much but we hope that, when comparing both the price and the product features against the rest of the market that the Total Loss Gap policy still offers fantastic value for the cover you receive.

Thank you again for taking the time to leave a review. We do appreciate both your feedback and your continued support as our customer.

Read the small print before purchase ...

At the outset this seems like a good deal until you try and make a claim.

I was recently informed by the dealer that my tyre had a nail in it. TLG state that you should take the car to a Halford Auto Centre and there was one just round the corner. However, they do not keep tyres in stock and would have to order one in for the following day. So you have to take the car (with a nail in the tyre) to a Halfords Auto Centre, they have to assess it and then send the request to TLG to authorise and this could take up to 48 hours according to Halfords (TLG disagreed with this). You then have to drive home and then drive back the following day (with nail still in tyre) to get replaced. Halfords then told me that their supplier could not supply my tyre brand (quattro so has to be the same tyre on all four corners) so I had to look for an alternative tyre centre and then get approved by TLG. I eventually found one but TLG would only authorise a *repair* not a replacement as the nail was inside the 'repair zone'. The tyre fitter did not recommend this given that I have a high performance tyre but TLG would not approve, so I opted for a new tyre and have had to cover the difference myself and only claim back the puncture cost.

I need to put in a claim for a scratch next so will see if that also presents obstacles due to red tape and small print.

My advice is to try and get feedback from people who have had to make claims before purchasing the cover. It may be cheaper to purchase but if the claim process is problematic then what price do you put on the time it takes to get an issue resolved?

Dear Sir/Madam, thank you for taking the time in leaving a review and feedback on the service you have received. Of course, we are sorry to hear that you have been less than satisfied with the service. Firstly, Total Loss Gap, as the provider of the policy, would not have direct access to the details of your claim. All claims are handled by the insurers appointed claims team, based in Sheffield.

As detailed in your policy terms and conditions, there is a complaint process in place for you to follow, plus protection with the Financial Ombudsman Service in the UK. Of course, you can contact the customer services team at Total Loss Gap and we would do all we can to assist with your claim.

All that said, as part of our duty of care we do monitor all feedback we receive in regards to the claims on the products we provide. We work very closely with the claims team to ensure our customers are looked after and therefore our reputation remains first class.

We have provided tens of thousands of these products to UK consumers, and by there very nature they have high claims frequency. As such, we would be aware very quickly of unhappy customers if there were significant flaws in the process.

We would offer the following comments on your feedback.

The claims team have Halfords Autocentre as a national account for claims. You will be directed to your local centre as the process is designed that you have the wheel inspected, the claims team can be called and they authorise a repair or replacement down to the information provided by the expert repairer. As Halfords Autocentre are on account, this means that you have no payment to make (other than any excess payable on the policy).

There are some factors we cannot control, and clearly the availabilty of the tyre you require would be one of them. In this case it appears that your specific tyre was not available. In this situation, the claims team will allow you to go to another tyre retailer, and if they are not on account then this can be processed on a 'pay and claim' basis.

I am not able to comment on the reasons why the claims team would only authorise a repair and not a replacement. If you can provide your name and other identifying details then we would be happy to look into that for you.

However, the claims team would not authorise a claim that would mean you are driving on an unsafe tyre. The policy allows for a repair or replacement, whichever is appropriate based on the damage to the tyre.

Again we do appreciate your feedback, and we hope that your subsequent claim on your Scratch and Dent policy went without a hitch.
