Thanks Tony for your help!

Booked tickets with the compay on Friday night and half way through I had my wifi drop, clicked back in and two tickets where purchased.

I made Tony aware of the problem and within a few hours the money was returned to my account and the one booking cancelled. Honesty is everything in business and these people look after their clients.

I will be back, thanks again.

Happy outcome

A technical issue with Trainline persuaded me to look elsewhere and it could be the start of a fulfilling new relationship! A cleaner, less corporate-looking website, an easy booking process and a bigger saving. What more could you ask for?

Money Money Money

I've used them and they are good, but you make a mistake and they don't want to know.

I don't often give 1 star, but i essentially made a mistake, fully admit that. I selected a ticket for a train that was departing at 1252. I was at the station at 1245, I selected the ticket. Then thought it's 1249. I will never print the tickets out and make the train. Next train was at 1328, I selected that ticket. I purchased it, but unknown to me my 1252 ticket was still in the basket. So I ended up with 2 tickets. I tried to follow the instructions for a refund.

Explaining that if you look at the time of the ticket 1251.22 seconds, it wouldn't have been possible to make the train. Then arguing back and forth. But they wouldn't even refund part of the journey. I get the they lose their value once the train has departed. But no one was deprived a seat. Anyway beware all. Good when they work, but no sympathy for any errors.

Thank you for your review. I am sorry this situation was frustrating.

For clarity for anyone reading, both journeys were selected, purchased, and issued together in the same checkout. Each journey and set of tickets is shown separately at checkout and again at the point of printing.

In this case:
> Two journeys were present in the basket at purchase.
> Two sets of tickets were printed at 12:51.
> The earlier ticket was for the 12:52 service.
> We were first contacted at 12:59, after the 12:52 train had already departed.

Advance tickets are set by the train operators and automatically lose their value once the booked train departs. This applies regardless of whether the train was boarded and regardless of whether another ticket was used instead. These are industry-wide rules and apply across all retailers.

Although contact was made shortly after departure, the ticket had already passed its departure time and there was therefore no facility to void, refund, or part-refund it.

We understand why this outcome is disappointing. However, we are required to apply the ticket conditions consistently once travel has passed.

Best Place to Buy Train Tickets

I highly recommend Train split. The app and website are both very simple to use. They find the cheapest train fare options, using split ticketing to save you money. They do all the hard work finding the cheapest ticket options so you don't have to, which saves time as well as money. They only take a small fee per journey - this is a % of the savings, NOT a whole journey, which is a bargain. Even with this fee, you still save money compared to buying the journey directly from the Train Company, without split tickets.

I ended up needing to delay my trip for a few weeks due to external circumstances and the rebooking side of things was also easy to do.

I had to reschedule a forthcoming trip, which I had booked through splitticketing.com, saving lots of money. They quickly refunded the cost of the new tickets (less a small admin charge). Had I booked myself the eight! tickets involved, getting a refund would have been a nightmare.
