Recently I had a problem with my purchase, my Trashie bag did not arrive, even though tracking number stated that it was delivered.
After reaching out to the costumer service and communicating with Barbara, the issue was resolved. Barbara was very professional, responsive and she resend it another trashie bag at no extra cost to me.
Thank you again for all your help!

What’s the truth behind the bags?

Someone on Reddit that claims they used to work for For Days said the textiles get sent over seas. There doesn’t seem to be proof in the pudding with what is actually happening with the textiles, especially since it seems it may not be any-house doing. The textiles could be getting dumped in a land fill and we’d never know.
Trying to leave a review on the website is impossible and yet that have over a thousand 5 star reviews, very odd. They boast in their website that they’ve got over 400,000 take bag bags sent back to them this year alone. At that rate, that’s over 8 million dollars alone right there - so why are we only getting, what’s equivalent to a $1 gift card, for every bag we send them? Yes $1 - do the math, you get 3,000 points per bag and a $5 gift card is 15,000 points. What a joke. I’ve spent $60+ on bags and am only capable of getting barely a $10 gift card. Seriously, what a joke. A great idea though if it was actually functional and they could prove what they’re really doing with the textiles and maybe making the rewards better but getting 8 million dollars+ just to ship all this shit to some other country and make it their problem is a fantastic business venture.

Hi Alexa, thanks for the candid feedback and for asking tough questions. I want to clarify a few things, because some of the conclusions here don’t reflect how the program actually works.

First, reviews can absolutely be left on our site and third-party platforms, which is how we’ve accumulated them over time. There’s nothing unusual or gated about that process.

Second, the math being used here assumes that every bag sent back equals pure revenue, which isn’t how the model functions. Each Take Back Bag includes the cost of manufacturing, shipping to the customer, return shipping, processing, sorting, downstream recycling, and verified reuse partners. Those costs are significant and ongoing—the bags are not “free money” once they come back.

TrashieCash points are designed as a reward, not a rebate or resale payout. They’re meant to incentivize participation in a circular system, not to mirror the full cost of the bag or the operational expenses required to handle the materials responsibly. That’s why points can be stacked and redeemed flexibly, rather than being tied one-to-one to a bag price.

As for where materials go: textiles are not simply “shipped to another country and made someone else’s problem.” Items are sorted and directed to appropriate reuse and recycling streams, with the goal of keeping as much material in circulation as possible and out of landfills. That work is complex, labor-intensive, and far from free.
It’s fair to say the program won’t be the right fit for everyone. But the idea that the company is pocketing millions while providing no value, no transparency, or no real recycling effort doesn’t align with how the system actually operates.

Great way to avoid landfills

I love the variety of items I can send back in my trashie bags. I used to throw out shoes that I don’t know what to do with. I like that I can clothes that could be used again along with clothes that are stained or do not make good donations. I would like to use larger bags available to make it possible to recycle bedding. I would also like to see bigger tech boxes available. I have never redeemed trashie cash or rewards but I view the cost of purchasing the bags as my shipping costs.

This is a scam!

I did the "takeback bag" through Fordays.com about a year ago and it was simple, buy a $20 takeback bag, fill it with used clothes, send it back and get $20 credit for clothing on thier online store. Well...that's clearly not the case anymore. I spent $60 on two bags last month, sent one back and apparently the most I can get now is a $5 gift card or a 30% discount at various retailers. I jsut spent $60 to get $5 and I gave away a bunch of my clothes! This is a scam!

Hi Lacie, thanks for sharing your feedback.

The For Days clothing store closed over a year ago, including store credit associated with it. That credit was tied specifically to the For Days retail store, which is no longer operating.

Today, the program operates on Trashie.io, where participants earn points that can be redeemed for gift cards and other partner offers. We communicated with our customers on many occasions beforehand to ensure this change was clear.

The price of each Take Back Bag covers the cost of return shipping to our facility for a 15lb bag, along with the labor required to sort and responsibly route textiles. Points are offered as a benefit of participation and are not intended to reimburse the cost of the shipping and labor.

To be clear, the accusation that this is a scam is unfounded. The points required for each reward or deal are shown clearly on our site before you redeem, and our Terms and Conditions state that the points and rewards program may change over time.

We’re sorry the updates weren’t what you expected, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

I joined Trashie's Unlimited Service so you don't have to!

Prior to joining Trashie Unlimited in October 2025 I was bombarded with emails telling me about their new pay-one-price get all the bags you want deal. I was told I'd get "premium" gift cards. I even filled out a survey asking which gift cards I wanted. So, I took a chance because I was about to clean out my mom's house. I already knew that the 1:1 gift card ratio had changed but because it was the "unlimited" service I thought it would be a better ratio. Ha! It is still the terrible "spend $10 and get $1."

Once I got over that disappointment, I figured I could still make back the money spent. With taxes, I paid $73.44 for the unlimited service. Each returned bag would get me 30 Trashie dollars which is the equivalent to three real dollars towards gift cards. So, in order to break even I would have to send in 25 bags. This is not great but it was doable.

Now, as of today, Trashie has changed their Trashie cash system. Instead of getting Trashie cash you get points. A $5 gift card is worth 15,000 points. A returned Unlimited bag will get you 7,500 points that means the bags are now only worth $2.50 in real money!

And the "rewards" that are not gift cards are complete crap! $20 off $100 at some store I would never shop at is not a "reward." I signed up solely for the real gift cards to real stores where I would normally spend money. Now I have to send in 30!! yes, 30 bags, in order to break even. I would never have shelled out over $73 to recycle if I had known what an incredible scam it is. No recycling program on the planet is worth this.

Hi Lara, thank you for sharing your experience.

We realize there may be a bit of confusion about our membership program. Trashie Unlimited is a membership aimed at making responsible clothing donation convenient and easy. Points are earned for participating and are not intended to reimburse the cost of membership. The membership fee covers return shipping, handling, and responsible sorting.

We want to clarify for others reading that suggestions that Trashie is a scam are unfounded. We clearly communicate how the program works, including membership terms, at sign-up, in confirmation emails, on our website, and through our support team so customers know what to expect.

We have reached out to you by email to review your account and find a solution that works best for you. If anyone else reading needs help, please contact help@trashie.io.

First and last order; just DON’T

I placed my first order for four take bag bags and was only shipped one. (How does that happen????) I reached out to customer service and they acted like this was a normal error, telling me “The Take Back Bags are shipped separately, so your missing bag should be arriving soon.” So here I am waiting for my 3 bags going on three weeks? Just got done reading the other reviews, wish I would never have ordered.

Imma be sooo fr. Those 5 star reviews gotta be fake, this company is a scam. Imagine paying for and ordering 4 bags for them to ship 1. Then customer service says they “ship separate” like that makes any sense. AND THEN THEY STILL DON’T ARRIVE. Yeah no, big ole scam please for the love of all things save your money

Hi Jami, thank you for sharing your experience. We’re really sorry for the frustration with your order. Take Back Bags ship in separate envelopes, but in your case the remaining bags were lost in transit. That isn’t typical, and we understand how confusing that must have felt on a first order.

Packages can occasionally go missing in transit—which can happen to any company. When that happens, we send a reshipment as soon as it is brought to our attention. Our team created a reshipment and shared tracking by email, and those bags now show delivered. If anything is still missing, please reply to our email or write to us at help@trashie.io so we can help get it sorted.

It’s a scam or misleading at best

It’s a scam or misleading at best. Was an early adopter of the take back program, back when For Days promoted it as a $1 for $1 in closet cash. Buy a take back bag for $20 get $20 dollars redeemable at their website. Since converted to these TB points system, the $100 I’ve spent on take back bags is worth $10 with 30 unusable points since points are only redeemable in 50 point increments. So I’d have to spent more for the 30 points I’m owed. Plus is all for gift cards of stores I don’t shop in. For days had some cute stuff so at the time I thought I’d be able to redeem the cash. Now I’m just out the cash and have read they mostly dump things in secondary overseas markets with no assurances that it’s actually been recycled.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The For Days clothing store closed over a year ago, which ended the store credit that was tied to that storefront. Today the Take Back Bag program operates on Trashie.io, where participants earn points that can be redeemed for premium gift cards and other partner offers. We communicated this shift in advance through customer emails and updated product pages to make the change clear.

Our mission is to ensure that none of the items we receive end up in landfills—and every part of our process is designed to uphold that commitment. We want to be very clear: we do not landfill textiles. Once items are collected, they are carefully sorted by condition and category. On average, 70% of the apparel we receive is suitable for rewear and is recirculated, with the majority remaining within the United States.

The remaining 30% is too worn to be reused and is responsibly recycled into new products and fibers, ensuring materials are returned to productive use when they can no longer be worn.

We’re sorry the changes didn’t align with what you were expecting, and we genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share this feedback so we can keep improving clarity and communication moving forward.

Great mission scammy rewards

The mission of this company is great, however, I have never been able to successfully use rewards I've redeemed. I've tried asking trashie support for help so that I can understand the additional details and conditions which are not available before you redeem the rewards (like "can use on this but not on that" detail which is not made available on trashie or retailer site BEFORE you redeem), however, I have been told "bad luck" and that the redemptions are permanent. It's very nice that they recycle the garments and fabrics. Very nice, but very scummy to be offered and given rewards that are useless after hours of trying and asking for support.

Hi Sally-anne, thanks for your honest feedback—we really value insights like this as we continue to improve.

We’re actively working to improve how reward details are displayed before redemption, including clearer terms and more flexibility. We know it’s frustrating to use points on something that doesn’t work as expected, and that’s not the experience we want for anyone.

That said, we’d be totally happy to re-add the TrashieCash you used on any rewards you weren’t able to redeem. Just reach out to our support team with the details, and we’ll take care of it.

We’re proud to offer a service that ensures everything you send is properly recycled—not dumped or wishcycled—and we’ll keep working to make the rewards side just as solid. Thanks for being part of the mission.

good for recycling...and wasting your money

First, the positives: If Trashie's socials are to be believed, they seem to have a good system for recycling. It is satisfying to keep used textiles out of a landfill. The system is easy to use. I also have to give their customer service a shoutout. I earned some "free" Trashie Cash browsing sites they suggested, but I never actually received the payout. Not sure if my fault or the site's, but I told customer service and they credited me right away.

Now, the negatives. Trashie boasts gift cards and rewards you can trade Trashie Cash for. These are limited, at best, and a straight up scam, at worst. When gift cards are listed (very very rarely), they sell out in literal minutes. I was able to secure one Columbia gift card, which was great, but I haven't seen gift cards listed in several months. The "rewards" are BS and are promos you can find anywhere like RetailMeNot etc. Not to mention, the websites are so random. Nothing I would normally buy. Trashie claimed they were opening a consignment store where you can use your cash and they never did. I'm stuck with $52 "Trashie cash" I doubt I'll ever be able to use. Not impressed.

Hi Chelsea, thanks so much for your honest and thoughtful feedback—it really helps guide where we go next. We’re glad to hear the recycling process has been smooth and that our support team was able to help quickly!

You’re absolutely right that some of the most popular gift cards (like Columbia and Nike) have gone fast in the past. But we’ve recently started adding a ton of new gift card options to our site, and we’re working hard to keep those stocked more consistently. If you’re not seeing them when logged into your account, please reach out to our team—we’re happy to help troubleshoot or guide you to what’s available.

Also, we hear you on the reward types and site selection—improving the quality, variety, and overall experience is a major focus for us right now. And if you redeemed any TrashieCash on rewards you weren’t able to use, we’d be more than happy to re-add that to your account. Just send our support team the details.

Thank you again for being part of the movement to keep clothing and textiles out of landfills—we really appreciate your continued support!

Sustainability Without Responsibility

I’ve been using Trashie’s Take Back Bags for about a year and half and have sent in 10 bags prior without any issue. Unfortunately, my most recent order of 8 bright pink bags was all defective. The dye transferred heavily onto my hands, clothing and even a pair of designer sneakers causing permanent stains.

I reached out to Trashie through their website contact form, direct email, Instagram messages and public comments, but received no response despite their stated 48-hour reply time. I even filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and, not surprisingly, they did not respond. It’s been over eight weeks of complete silence from the company.

Trashie’s unwillingness to address customers directly about a clear product safety issue that also affects delivery and warehouse personnel is extremely disappointing. For a company whose mission is supposedly about sustainability and responsibility, the lack of accountability speaks volumes.

Hi Casandra, we’re truly sorry for the experience you had and for the long silence after your initial outreach. After investigating, we realized your messages were unfortunately caught in our spam filter, which meant our team didn’t see them in time. We’ve since added daily “spam sweeps” to our customer support process to prevent this from ever happening again.

A member of our team has now connected with you directly to process a refund, send replacement bags, and make sure your feedback was escalated to our QA team. We’re also reviewing the batch of pink bags with our production partners to prevent dye transfer issues from recurring.

Thank you for sharing your experience—even though it was a tough one, it’s helped us identify areas to improve both product quality and customer care. We take this seriously and are committed to earning back your trust.

Super easy service, awesome customer service

I’ve used Take Back Bags since before they rebranded as Trashie, and it’s super easy to use. In fact, so easy that I’d never had a reason to complete my account with a password. But recently I couldn’t access my account through the link, and since I’d never made a password, I had no way to get in. Cue their customer service. I messaged them late that night, by the next morning they had sent me a solution. I was in. And now I have a password too. Even their customer service is super easy. Highly recommend using the Take Back Bag service.

Trashie Experience

Used Trashie twice so far. It's been a great help in cleaning out my closet. I tend to hold on to things longer than I should because I don't want to add waste to landfills, so Trashie gives me some piece of mind.

This second time I also ordered the Tech Box. The box came flat in an envelope and I couldn't figure out how to put it together. I reached out to Customer Service via the form on the website asking if they had a video walkthrough on how to set up the box. Before I knew it, someone got back to me with a video tutorial. I was thrilled and successfully put the box together.

The only thing I didn't realize is that you're limited in what you can send in the Tech Box. My fault for not double checking before I placed the order. So, I might be holding on to the box for a bit until I can fill it up a decent amount before sending. If you live near a Staples/Recycling Center, I think that might be a better option for recycling tech since they can also accept batteries.

I like the idea of the rewards system. I've used some points to try out two different shops, but wish there were more options, and better value.

Overall, I plan on using Trashie to recycle my old clothes!

Totally fair point on the item restrictions with the Tech Box. We include those details on our website, but we know it’s easy to miss when you’re excited to get started. Holding onto the box until it’s full works perfectly, and we’re here if you ever have questions about what’s accepted.

Excellent Trashie customer service!

I've used Trashie Take Back Bags for years. I've redeemed rewards for merchandise. I've always had a good experience. I recently moved, and wanted to send a Take Back bag. Trashie turns chore into purpose

Trashie makes me sort through my clothing and fabric with a lot more thoughtfulness than before. It's not just stuff that I want to dispose of but not send to landfill. It gives me a chance to consider whether a piece still has some life in it and could go to another non-profit. The task makes something more than "dumping" old stuff into finding the right purpose for it. Emailing Trashie staff is also a pleasure, not a chore. Responses are quick and specific. The money spent at Trashie is so worth it. Thank you!
