Trupanion is INCREDIBLE
Trupanion is INCREDIBLE, but I wish they covered just a bit more of our recent experience. We ended up paying 25% of the $4600 bill , even though my premiums for my cats are very high every month. Feels kind of ridiculous that $700 in exam fees weren't covered. Still a life saver though, (literally). Ease of use is outstanding and quickness to respond even better.

Thank you Trupanion, if not for our Trupanion Pet Insurance, our out-of-pocket would have been a huge blow to our finances! We are so glad that years ago our past veterinarian suggested that we sign up for Trupanion and we also love that we don’t have to lift a finger trying to file a claim. VCA files it for us and the quick response from Trupanion comes through while we sit in the doctors office! Both the clinic and the pet parents gets emails with the speedy response!

I am extremely disappointed with dishonest renewal premiums
I am extremely disappointed with Trupanion Pet Insurance.
The monthly premiums have always been expensive, but Trupanion has now increased my premium by approximately 25%. I was already paying about $150 per month for my two-year-old German Shepherd, and I have maintained coverage since we first brought him home. My new premium is now approximately $200 per month.
The explanation I was given was that there had been too many claims and that the cost of my dog’s care had become too expensive for them. That is extremely frustrating because covering necessary medical procedures is the entire reason people purchase pet insurance.
In my experience, Trupanion is happy to collect high monthly premiums and deductibles, but once the insurance is actually used, the customer can face a significant increase at renewal. This makes pet owners feel financially trapped at the exact moment they are trying to provide necessary care for their animals.
Be cautious when reading reviews about Trupanion covering cancer treatments or other expensive procedures. They may pay eligible claims, but that does not mean your monthly premium will remain affordable afterward. My experience has been that once the claims became costly, the premium increased substantially.
Charging nearly $200 per month to insure a two-year-old German Shepherd is extremely difficult to justify. Pet owners deserve transparent pricing and should not feel punished for using the coverage they have paid for.
Shame on you, Trupanion.

A Lifesaver for Biggie
We signed up for Trupanion about two years ago, hoping we’d never need it. When our Lab, Biggie, unexpectedly needed emergency surgery, I can’t imagine going through that experience without them.
The claims process was incredibly simple, and what impressed me most was that Trupanion paid their portion of the bill directly to the pet hospital. We didn’t have to pay the full amount upfront and wait weeks for reimbursement, which was such a relief during an already stressful time.
Everything was handled quickly, and Trupanion kept us updated throughout the entire process. Having one less thing to worry about allowed us to focus on what mattered most—Biggie’s recovery.

I would give a zero if I could. Instead of focusing on the overall rating, I read the reviews and realized there are a lot of people who had similar experiences that I had. I rescued Pepper in November 2025 and enrolled with Trupanion in March 2026. She had parvo before I adopted her. After months of paying premiums I submitted two claims totaling $379.63 for acute diarrhea and conjunctivitis. Both were denied as pre-existing conditions. I appealed twice, including submitting a formal letter from my veterinarian who specifically stated that diagnostic testing showed NO evidence of permanent intestinal damage from parvo and that the conjunctivitis cause was unspecified. Both appeals were denied. I received zero coverage after paying $190 in premiums. Trupanion is not appropriate for rescue dogs with any medical history. Save your money and go with Fetch instead — they actually built their insurance specifically for rescue pets.
I can’t reply to them below. But I did dispute the denial of the claim. And they still said it was a past issue even though it was not. My dog all of a sudden was showing signs of diarrhea and vomiting so I brought her to the vet and they said that was a pre-existing condition because she had loose stools when I got her as a puppy. Which is completely different than what I brought her in for.

Highly deceptive marketing. They claim to reimburse 90%. That is a lie I got back a little over $500, from an almost $1400 injury. I will be looking for better insurance for my dog. Probably Lemonade, once I do some research on the company. I will NOT be keeping this bullshit "insurance"...

Worth every penny
We have had Trupanion since both my dogs were puppies (8 and 7 years old now). Trupanion does not cover wellness and some other stuff, but they have allowed us to make sure our dogs get the care they need without worrying about how to pay for more than our deductible. As they have gotten older our premiums have increased, but we have continued paying the premiums as Trupanion has come through every time. They charge the deductible per condition, but after that has been met you only pay coinsurance and taxes. Twice now Trupanion has paid out more in claims for us than we would have saved just putting away the premiums alone. Several of the vets we have worked with also work directly with Trupanion, so there have been instances where because our vet filed claims for us in the past, we had already met our deductible for a condition when the big bills started to roll in. We cannot recommend them enough.

First off this is a good insurance if…
First off this is a good insurance if you have a deep pocketbook.
Almost every year the rates go up. This year was $26.00 a month increase. Now I pay $106.00 a month for one dog. Once you submit a claim and your dog has a medical problem you can’t switch insurances as it will be a pre-existing condition. They have you locked in and there seems to be no control how much they increase your rate.
I advise you to read lots of reviews and shop around. I chose another pet insurance for the dog we adopted after this one.
