Reglyph is a web app that translates scanned and image-only PDFs while keeping the original layout. Ordinary translators return a wall of reflowed text; Reglyph gives you back a document that looks like the original, just in the new language. How it works: you upload a scanned or photographed PDF and choose a language pair. Reglyph reads the page with OCR, removes the original text from the page image, translates it, and places the translation back where the original text was. Columns, tables, figures, official stamps, signature lines and numbers stay exactly where they were. Who uses it: people translating birth and marriage certificates, school transcripts and diplomas for applications; anyone who needs a bank statement or contract in another language; researchers reading foreign-language papers; and teams working through technical manuals. Reglyph supports 19 languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, Korean, Russian and Turkish, and can produce a side-by-side bilingual PDF for checking the translation against the source. Pricing: every account gets 5 free pages every day with a Google sign-in, no credit card. For more, you can pay as you go at $0.30 per page ($3 minimum) or choose a monthly plan. Reglyph is machine translation. For documents that must be officially certified, use a certified human translator.

Translated a detailed Japanese machine…

Translated a detailed Japanese machine operator's manual, which worked first shot and Reglyph managed a very credible job of retaining the layout. English version came out in remarkably fluid language and not the usual gibberish at all. Small Japanese characters contained within the illustrations themselves (e.g. pictures of labels on the machine) were not translated, but all the labels for the diagram were. Great job!

Thank you, Ian! An operator's manual full of diagrams is exactly the kind of document we built Reglyph for, so we're really glad the layout and the English came through so well. Reglyph does translate text inside images, but our text recognition can occasionally miss some small text, like a few of the labels in your illustrations. That's on our side and we're actively working to improve it. Thanks for the detailed feedback, and happy translating!
