I placed several commission bids with this auction house in last weeks sale. Bids I place with all other auction houses are regarded as maximum bids, but not here! BEWARE. Commission bids, according to their T&Cs are discretionary, meaning they can bid more than your actual maximum bid. I was charged £400 more on 6 lots, plus their fees, costing an additional £500 more than I had intended to spend.
BEWARE, I certainly will not be bidding at this auction house again!

Treasures to be found

Staff are knowledgeable, range of goods is vast.
Golden rule is always look at items you are interested in or ask for condition report .
Rupert is the most thorough in his write ups.
It's better now with pre booking for consignments ,no queuing for hours on a Saturday.
Good prices are achieved but bargains can also be found .

Friendly and honest experience

Some people on this site have been disappointed by items they have bought sight unseen. The answer is to phone for a free condition report before bidding. The auction room assistants go to great lengths to provide an honest report. As a buyer and seller over three decades, I have found the staff to be friendly, helpful and willing to point out defects which I haven't seen myself.

Unethical when you bid online

Unethical when you bid online. I have bought both online and in the saleroom. I have had a few issues with these guys when bidding online. Mostly, the description has no mention of damage - even extensive damage - and I have purchased a few items which have been badly damaged but the photos or description don't show this. Also experienced winning online, told I have won, gone to pick up and told it was sold to someone in the saleroom. Their fees for bidding online are excessive, and yet there is little guarantee of good service. 1st time I registered to bid online they charge my card 10p. 2nd time, 20p, 3rd 30p, 4th 40p? ?? What is that all about? Other auctions authenticate your card with a 1p transaction! Never a buyer or seller will I longer be - though have spent loads withe these over the years. Their loss for shoddy practices!

Great experience.

Emailed TW Gaze, appointment made for valuation couple of days later with expert, had good valuation. Left two pieces, sold couple of weeks later above valuation. Paid a few days later. Simple, professional and very happy. Listened to live auction online. 5 stars.
Believe me, I know vendors who have a problems with other so called reputable auction houses, my experience with Gaze was stress free.

Online Bid

Online Bid for a table, photos made it look in really good condition and the listing contained no details of any damage. I won and went to collect and it's badly scratched, dented and sun damaged. Poor listing practices.

I had an online bid accepted and the item was subsequently sold to someone in the saleroom. There was no "final warning", unlike all the other lots. It is highly likely that this was an arrangement to enable the purchaser to avoid an auction and buy under value. I note that others have reported similar practices at this auction house. Avoid.
