I had an absolutely horrible experience. Met with multiple different tutors, some of whom were telling me incorrect information about the exam I was planning on taking. After weeks of frustration and initial tutoring sessions with different tutors, I ended up requesting a full refund, which they granted (their only saving grace).

I found my tutor well suited to adult learners. She customized my experience, taking into account my familiarity with Romance languages. As a result, we have been able to move forward extremely quickly. I highly recommend my French tutor, Pat.

My experience with Varsity Tutors has been very positive. The platform provides a broad range of useful learning resources, including one-on-one tutoring, practice problems, diagnostic assessments, flashcards, self-study materials, live classes, and other tools that allow students to reinforce concepts outside of scheduled tutoring sessions. I found having these resources available in one place convenient and helpful when working through challenging material.

However, the standout part of my experience with Varsity Tutors was unquestionably my tutor, Amin Hassan.

Amin was exceptional. He was patient, understanding, encouraging, and remarkably good at explaining difficult concepts in a way that I could work through and understand. When I struggled with a particular concept, he never made me feel rushed or uncomfortable about asking questions or needing something explained again. Instead, he adjusted his approach, broke the problem into manageable steps, and coached me through the reasoning rather than simply providing an answer.

What impressed me most was Amin's ability to recognize when I was having difficulty and respond with patience rather than pressure. His approach helped make challenging material considerably more manageable and allowed me to work through concepts that had previously caused me significant difficulty.

Varsity Tutors offers an impressive collection of learning tools and resources, but ultimately the quality of tutoring depends greatly on the person working with the student. In that respect, I could not have asked for a better tutor than Amin Hassan. His patience, professionalism, understanding, and genuine commitment to helping me learn were exceptional.

I would recommend Varsity Tutors for its range of resources, but I would especially and enthusiastically recommend Amin to anyone looking for a patient, knowledgeable, and supportive tutor.

Teresa is an amazing tutor! My granddaughter has several learning disabilities and math is a real challenge. In three lessons Teresa was able to correct our granddaughter’s counting issues. Teresa uses creativity and alternative teaching techniques to connect with our granddaughter. She is so patient and supportive which has been such a blessing. I highly recommend Teresa and we are truly thankful she was assigned to our tutor request.

I purchased 4 hours of service during the summer. Then I received an extra charge on my credit card. When I reached out to the company, the agent stated that the sessions went over my purchased time. As a client, I didn't know I had to keep track of the time. Since this was a prepaid service, I was not expecting any charges, nor was I aware that my sessions went over time.

The tutors are fine but they cancel at the last minute a lot and you can’t get a decent replacement.
We agreed to 12 hours of on line tutoring for 940$. A month later, they charged the account again for no reason. Their customer service was incomprehensible and clueless and eventually told me they would not refund me. I filed a complain with the BBB and disputed the transaction with my bank. This email is meant to warn others of this fraudulent business.

Now I had no issues with signing up they were very accommodating when I called them the only issue that I had was the reoccurring dates of payments because my payment dates are different than what they signed me up on and when I contacted them to renegotiate the date because I was told when I signed up oh you can call us we'll work with you because my paydays are different than the date that they sign me up for they weren't able to do that they were like well we can't change it from the date you signed up but that's not what I was told when I signed up so when I contacted them back I said hey you know either we're going to have to come to some kind of compromise I said because I you know I can't pay on that date my paydays are different they were like we can't do that so I canceled my account and I requested a refund of the remaining time because I only use one session so they were very accommodating very apologetic the only thing I'm very frustrated with is when I brought this up when I signed up with them I was told I will work with you that's not what I was told when I called them to change my payment date because of the simple fact I don't get paid on that date every month that's the only complaint that I had the tutor was great very nice lady she been in the nursing field for a while that's why I was taking the tutoring to get kind of brush up on math and and skills so I have no complaints other than I wish they would have told me that when I signed up I wouldn't have wasted my time their time and gotten frustrated but they're very professional they did apologize and I just said you know your sales people need to be telling people no once you set that date of your payment we cannot redo it or change the date it has to be on that date because I brought that up when I signed up I said hey I don't get paid on the 21st of every month my paydays are different each month and was told that would not be an issue but it was but as for the tutor she's excellent very nice lady she sent me some emails with the samples of stuff that I downloaded before I canceled my account thank God but I just really was very frustrated with the that's not been able to come with some kind of solution

Disappointing tutoring experience and a charge after cancellation

We tried Varsity Tutors this summer for math support for our son, who has ADHD. Before signing up, we explained his needs and were assured that their tutors were certified and knew how to work with children like him. We also made clear that we wanted to try the service for one month before deciding whether to continue.

Our first tutor came unprepared, struggled to use the website, and did not appear to have a teaching plan for our son. There was no orientation, and we felt the sessions provided very little useful instruction. When we complained, Varsity Tutors offered a replacement and assured us that this would resolve the problems.

The replacement tutor was better, but we did not see the expertise in supporting a child with ADHD that we had been promised. In particular, he did not check whether our son understood the material or ask him to demonstrate his understanding. The service was not meeting our son’s needs, so we decided not to continue.

Before the month ended, we tried to cancel through the website but were unable to complete the cancellation. We then called support and were told that our remaining sessions would be honored and the service would be canceled. We also have emails confirming the cancellation.

Despite that confirmation, we received another charge this month. When we asked Varsity Tutors to reverse it, they refused. We had explicitly requested cancellation and had not agreed to continue.

Our experience was disappointing both in the quality of tutoring and in the handling of our cancellation. Families seeking support for a child with ADHD should ask specific questions about the assigned tutor’s experience and teaching approach. Based on our experience, I would also encourage customers to keep written cancellation confirmations and check subsequent card statements.

Customer service is mediocre , but they did deliver on their promises, I initially gave a 1 star review, thinking I got scammed, but I was wrong . Safe to use , not a scam, be thorough when signing the contract though

Very poor experience. We were sold on very customized tutoring with testing tools to hone precise tutoring with seasoned ex-Teachers, etc. All BS as far as I can tell. They have testing tools, but the tutor has NO ACCESS to the results to aid in their tutoring. Add to that our first "precisely selected tutor" for our daughter (1) could not get their video working, and (2) was barely understandable with broken english. Requested a different tutor which took more than a week to be reassigned... and then was a 23 yo just out of college. Smart kid... but not what was advertised.
Then, we shifted from summer into the school year and was a multi-week hassle trying to get the tutoring schedule changed from weekdays to weekends.

All in all, we had high hopes and were greatly disappointed.

Varsity Tutors has acknowledged receipt of my first review, and they have chosen to respond by asking that I remove that review and sign a document in order to receive a refund for an unauthorized and inappropriate charges to my account. I have notified Varsity tutors that asking for reviews to be removed is against Trustpilot policies, yet they continue to reinforce that I will need to cancel my review and sign a document to have my refund honored. As I mentioned to Varsity tutors, I feel that this exemplifies some of the unprofessionalism of their practices and their excessive willingness to perform as if they are a company that treats consumers with dignity without actually putting in the work to ensure that individuals are treated fairly and with respect. I would encourage others who are considering working with Varsity Tutors to research other companies and avoid the potential issues of working through problems with VT customer service departments. Again, while their tutors are excellent, the automated billing with a lack of accountability for reported issues, consumer disrespect, and manipulative practices are not worth the concern whn alternative provider options exist.

I am wrapping up the first month of tutoring sessions for my daughter for PSAT math help. The first few weeks were up and down with this company. It took a few tries to find a math tutor for her that was a good fit, but VT really worked with us. I did have to call them several times until they finally assigned us a consistent rep to help us navigate the system. AJ has been fantastic. He actually followed through with helping us get the right tutor, he called to check in to make sure the appointments were scheduled correctly and he made sure we could access the extra hours. I had almost given up on VT until he stepped in. Now my daughter has a math tutor that is clear in his explanations and whom she really likes. If her scores increase in October, we will definitely use them again next summer.

Dishonest business practices and refusal to refund unauthorized charges
Do not trust Varsity Tutors with your payment information. This company uses deceptive practices to overcharge customers and then hides behind system limitations to keep money they were never authorized to take.
I originally purchased eight tutoring sessions per month at full price. Before the month ended, I called to cancel my subscription to avoid being auto-billed for the next cycle. During that call, the representative convinced me to stay by offering a discounted rate for a four-session monthly plan. They canceled my original eight-session contract, set up a new agreement for four sessions at the discounted rate, and helped me schedule those exact four sessions while I was still on the phone.
A month later, I checked my account and discovered they had billed me for six sessions instead of the agreed-upon four.
Over the past few weeks, I have emailed and called five separate times, speaking with five different representatives and managers. I even provided written email documentation explicitly proving the terms we agreed upon and what they committed to sell me. Despite clear proof that they charged me for two extra hours I never authorized or used, Varsity Tutors refuses to issue a refund. Their sole excuse is that "the system does not allow a refund." I gave up the escalation and they said they will honor the 2 extra sessions anytime I need, which they know I don't need as my exam was done.
Once Varsity Tutors has your credit card on file, they will find ways to bill you beyond your agreement, and their customer service will completely block you from getting your money back. This is not a trustworthy educational organization—it is a predatory service that steals money from customers through deceptive billing practices. Save yourself the stress and financial loss, and use tutoring service elsewhere.

Varisity tutors is so useless!!! I had a really horrible experience with Varsity tutors because they cancelled so many tutoring sessions I was supposed to have. You should never sign up for tutoring sessions with them. Varsity tutors is so terrible! They are hands down the worst tutors I've ever had in my life which says a lot.

Be very careful before signing up with Varsity Tutors, especially with prepaid sessions.

I prepaid for 8 tutoring sessions and only used 3. I needed to take a break and wanted to wait for my tutor to return, but I was told that I could only pause my account for a maximum of 30 days.

When I explained that I wanted to cancel instead, I was told that they would not prorate or refund me for the 5 unused sessions that I had already paid for.

This is extremely disappointing. Life happens. What if a customer becomes seriously ill, has a family emergency, needs to travel unexpectedly, or simply needs to stop tutoring for a period longer than 30 days? In my experience, the choices were essentially to resume within their allowed timeframe or lose the money I had already paid for unused sessions.

I understand paying for the 3 sessions I actually used. I have no issue with that. My complaint is that I paid in advance for 8 sessions, used only 3, and they would not refund the unused portion after I canceled.

Please be very careful before signing up and paying in advance. Make sure you fully understand their cancellation, pause, and refund policies before giving them your money.

I would not recommend prepaying for multiple sessions based on my experience.
