About 3 years ago a had a man cave built at mine which included some Siberian larch cladding. Roll on some time from this and I was after the same cladding for another project at mine and wanted some consistency.

From the moment I contacted Vastern with very vague delivery details of the previous order the builders made to today when my new order of incredibly high quality timber they’ve been incredibly helpful, friendly and very communicative.

I will be coming here again for future projects I have and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

We are renovating our pub and were looking for some oak for beams and a new bar . We searched all the local sawmills and found Vastern sawmill to be by far the cheapest around . The quality of service we got was second to none . The whole experience was faultless, from all concerned . If you’re looking for any timber don’t waste time looking around just go to Vastern first.

Vastern have been very easy to deal with and the delivery driver was brilliant.

It's always been my experience, that the better the web-site presentation, the poorer the actual service is from a company, and this company certainly fits that bill. Wonderful web-site, a seemingly huge range to choose from of varying products, but was I able to get what I wanted? No. The person I saw today at their 'showroom' made Basil Fawlty seem welcoming. More of that in a moment.

Wanting a few pieces of oak for a project, from their website, they seemed like the place to be able to help. 1st problem: It said on the their website that due to electricity supply problems, they may not be able to answer their phone, which was the case when I tried to call. What they additionally failed to mention, was that there wouldn't be any service available to people calling at their 'showroom'. I therefore phoned their 'sawmills', which is nearer home, to ask if they carried any stock there, and was told that they didn't hold any stock at all, but at the 'showroom' site they carried stock, and I should go and have a look there.

Their website says: Please visit us in Wiltshire to browse samples and discuss your project in our oak framed showroom, or come and select from our stocks of planed and sawn timber boards. With over 4000M3 of sawn and machined timber in stock we have plenty to choose from.

I get there (40 mile round trip), and am eventually greeted by some surly character, who obviously wished I wasn't there, and it seems all electricity supplies are off, and everything very gloomy. I'm told I'll have to come back another day, but I point out that there is no point in me doing so, if they don't have the sizes I want. Could they physically check for me please.

Having seen the timber sizes I want, I'm then told I could go round and have a look myself. Go round where? And in the dark? I point out that the Health & Safety people wouldn't appreciate me, a member of the public, doing so, and request that they look for me, which they reluctantly do.

It seems no, they don't have any timber wider than 200mm, although on their website the planed square edge oak boarding is available up to 350mm

I'm then told that if I had read the website, it says that not all sizes/thicknesses may be available. The actually wording says: We can not guarantee that all thickness and width combinations will always be available.

If nothing is available over 200mm, then nearly 50% of what is listed is not available. This being the case, they need to adjust the sizes on their website to reflect the availability truth. Why put sizes on there that are not available? Remember how welcoming the website made the experience sound?
