The owner was very rude and…

The owner was very rude and intimidating, I found his attitude and demeanour disgusting. I went there to enquire about wholesale prices without me even introducing myself or my business interest he dismissively said 'you need to have a business'. I said 'i do', to which he responded 'you need to have a premise and statements or else you wont have my backing because this store cost a f****** fortune in a passive aggressive tone. I was very shocked by his behaviour.

Rude and Discourteous Customer Service

I visited this aquarium store for the third time on 13/7/23, after having previously visited them twice before, and spent lots of my money on some of their tropical aquarium start-up equipment and items.

My two previous visits to this Shoreditch store had been satisfactorily informative and customer-welcoming, although, even then, I had felt a little uncomfortable with the occasional off-colour banter from their staff. Because I was a new customer to their business. I just put that in-your-face banter down to East End working class male bravado! However, on this third visit, something went horribly unpleasant and wrong for me. with their bizarre approach to customer service.

From the moment I walked into the store and began asking technical questions and making stock enquiries, the staff were rude and unprofessional towards me! Virtually all of my enquiries were subjected to sarcastic put-downs. It was as if they did not want to serve me - or (perhaps more disturbingly because of my ethnicity) someone who looks like me!

I was discourteously upbraided for daring to pull out my card to purchase a couple of items that cost £9.50, instead of making a cash payment. And, despite being in my early 50s(!), I was patronisingly addressed as "young man" by one surly member of their team.

When, by way of gentle customer feedback, I had the sheer effrontery to suggest to another member of their team that it might be really helpful - especially to an aquarium novice enthusiast like me - to reference on their fish species information display cards the approximate maximum adult length of the various fish species on display in their tanks, I felt that the tone of the verbal response that I received was abrupt and aggressively dismissive. It has actually been my experience from now visiting several other aquarium stores in London that this sort of data on information display cards is quite common, as well as being a really useful tool to determine what species to select for a 'community tank' within a relatively small capacity aquarium. But this rude man tossed my feedback aside and told me that he simply could not be bothered to review his tank display information cards.

I even received a sarcastic put down about my eyesight, when I mistakenly confused my millimetre and centimetre measurements, whilst discussing my ideal preference for certain tropical fish species. A more professionally respectful response to this honest mistake by me might have been to paraphrase what I'd said to him and politely clarify if I had actually meant to say "centimetre".

Anyway, I won't now be returning to this store. They seem to spend a lot of their time verbally rubbishing and deriding their aquarium retail competitors, and boasting how, apparently, they are the best aquarium and the most knowledgeable supplies store in London! Yet this alleged pre-eminence within this niche London market doesn't give a toss for getting the customer service basics right - i.e. ALWAYS being polite, respectful, empathically responsive to feedback and professionally courteous to every customer! They need to work harder on getting this basic aspect of customer service right before putting down other actually much more respectful and professional aquarium outlets, and vaunting their hollow claims about their so-called brilliance. As customers, we do not need, welcome or deserve this disrespectful East End schoolyard gang bully approach to customer service!!

extremely knowledgeable and helpful company.

After being to Wholesale Tropicals in Bethnal Green, East London, I feel much more confident about looking after my fish. They are experts in freshwater fish and tropical fish and are always happy to answer any questions you may have about looking after your fish and thanks to them, my fish are much healthier and happier. They have such a wide range of fish to chose from so you are completely spoiled for choice. I would definitely recommend taking a trip to their store

Great people, great fish

Wholesale Tropicals is a great aquarium shop that is a staple of the East London Bethnal Green community. What the locals know I now know too, Wholesale Tropicals are a fantastic source for a massively wide variety of freshwater tropical fish.

If you are in the area give them a visit, you won't regret it.
