Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 59 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many people reported significant difficulties in making contact, often finding helplines unresponsive or emails unanswered, and frequently encountered unhelpful, dismissive, or impatient staff. Customers felt their concerns were minimized or they were treated poorly, and many were surprised by high costs for services like assessments or gardening. However, some people did report positive interactions with specific staff members who were described as friendly, sympathetic, and genuinely helpful. AGE UK slave labour

I started volunteering for these and soon they were demanding I worked full time permanently for free, when it came to me applying for my paid NHS job at the local hospital they refused to give a reference to try keep me working slave labour at AGE UK. My work was great but they just wanted to stop me from leaving them and they sabotaged my NHS job which is highly unfair of them. What a horrible company. Everyone has working rights and AGE ignore health and safety, don't do staff inductions or manual handling.. A total unethical place to work or visit he company are selfish

Unfriendly charity shop especially for those in need.

I was donating a lot of clothing and articles to my local charity shop age.uk but the rudeness I got back from particular staff was unbelievable when buying certain articles and returning an item which did not work properly and was quite dangerous with no apology when leaving the shop being told not to come back. Very sad indeed

Dear Robin,

Thank you for getting in touch and for taking the time to share your feedback.

I am sorry for the experience you have had and how it has made you feel. I believe this relates to a Local AgeUK service, as opposed to a national service. Whilst we at the national charity work in partnership with these organisations and share the same brand, they are nonetheless each independently registered organisations and we are not a “Head Office” or governing body. If you wish to, I can pass on the contact details of your Local Age UK, I will just need your postcode which you can share with us privately on feedback@ageuk.org.uk.

Warm wishes
Age UK

100% won't be volunteering

Apon reading all these 100% negative reviews has made my mind up NOT to either volunteer or use any of there services especially being 70 years old.
I've currently volunteer for a befriending charity and the British Red Cross & was looking to do more.
Which thanks to all these negative experiences both in volunteering and the services they provide now won't happen which is Age UK loss.
Ps if any management reading this post?
Perhaps you may want to review the your services you are supposed to offer?

The volunteers always had transport issues so where unable to do half of what was needed. I thought being disabled was hard but working around if their staff would turn up was too much. So I gave them up. Work on reliability.

Hi Millie, I'm really sorry to hear of your disappointing experience. Based on what you've said I imagine this is in relation to a Local Age UK? Would you be kind enough to email us further details, including where you are based, and we can ensure that your valuable feedback reaches the right team: feedbackatageuk@ageuk.org.uk

An aspiring volunteer’s experience

I can’t speak to their services, but I’ve been trying to volunteer with Age UK since August 2021 and it’s been so poorly organized that I’ve still not been assigned, despite numerous chases and despite jumping through their hoops (sometimes two or three times because of internal confusion and mismanagement). I don’t want to deter any volunteers, but based on my own experience, you’re likely more helpful volunteering somewhere else rather than hanging out in limbo for a year+ with Age UK.

Hello Alex I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. May I ask which team or service you were trying to volunteer with - was it with the National Charity, or your Local Age UK?
If you'd be kind enough to send more details to us at feedbackatageuk@ageuk.org.uk then we can make sure the right team receives your valuable feedback. Volunteers are absolutely key to much of the work Age UK does for older people, so we'd really appreciate the chance to look into this and make improvements wherever we can.

Do not enter into agreements with these…

Do not enter into agreements with these charlatans praying on vulnerable people. To change the bath in my parents house to a shower tray minimum charge is £6,000. To be clear every other aspect of the bathroom is perfectly decorated, tiled etc. So its taking the bath out, replacing with a shower tray/waste and then tile down to the floor (we have those tiles already). We are keeping the existing shower as it is beautiful, powerful and taps are already on the wall. £6,000 MINIMUM. its so disgusting that they cant operate in this way especially as so many people will fall for the brand name and/or don't have anyone else to project manage this for them. How is this allowed to happen???

Not worth the paper it's written on

This charity wastes an abundant amount of paper to fuel its pernicious and vindictive advertising campaign which encourages young men to gamble away their earnings in a cost-of-living crisis. You will find my letter, along with the junk mail you decided to send to my address, enclosed in the envelope returned to yourselves.

For public consumption, please also find my letter below:

Dear ageUK Lottery,

I find myself receiving yet another article of promotional junk mail from yourselves, wherein you attempt to sell me gambling services. As previously stated, I do not wish to receive this.
Therefore, please find the junk mail attached. Any further unwanted correspondence shall be given the same treatment, wherein you will then foot the bill (twice) for postage costs.

I do not feel it appropriate that you continue to bombard me, an 18 year old male, with your gambling advertisements. As you very well know, my demographic is very susceptible to predatory betting & gambling companies taking advantage of them for monetary gain.
Encouraging vulnerable people to gamble away their money in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis is absolutely horrific, and shows that you have absolutely no regard for the people you target.

May I remind you that, in 2021, the Amazon rainforest saw the worst deforestation levels in 15 years. This is due in large part to greedy companies cutting down the trees for paper. With the catastrophic destruction such practices are causing, it is frankly insulting that this paper is then wasted on malicious, targeted spam tirades – instead, you should be doing your part to reduce your reliance on paper, thereby protecting the planet we all live on.

I shall close in saying that, if any further junk mail reaches my door, I will be forced to take action.
You had no permission to send your spam to my address; therefore, I know I would have good legal footing should I choose to pursue my case in court.

Many Thanks,
Will Hoskings

Hello Will thank you for taking the time to get in touch with your feedback, which we really value.

We raise vital funds through many means including our raffle and lottery which enables us to be here for every older person with a place to turn to and access our support. Our raffles and weekly lottery are another way of helping us to spread awareness of our work and they provide a fun and alternative way for supporters to get involved with the charity. We take our responsibilities seriously and all of our literature carries clear information about gamble aware advice.

We do share your concerns around the environmental impact of our mailings, and we do have processes in place to minimise the environmental impact of sending letters. Wherever possible we use carbon balanced printing. This means that any emissions generated through our paper and printer usage are offset and balanced by conservation charities such as the World Land Trust. While our use of paper is reducing year on year, for many of donors receiving letters is their preferred form of communication and we simply would not be able to reach them on other channels. Our address is printed on all communications as well as instructions on how to opt out.

We really appreciate you taking the time to get in touch to let us know that you no longer want to be contacted by Age UK. We only ever want to contact people who are happy to hear from us, so thank you for helping us achieve this. If you’d like to contact us with your full address we can make sure that you don’t ever receive addressed or partially addressed mailings from Age UK – please do let us know via supporters@ageuk.org.uk

Scam Charity

Scam charity. Downstairs neighbor was getting home visits by them so thought he was in good hands and left them to it. Going into the property because he needed help bringing in some parcels. He had been allowed to live in own urine and feces for weeks. All his food was rotten and he was living like a hermit. Any charity that had access to him and allowed him to live like this isn't a charity or any of it workers or valenteers have any humanity. Needless to say now I know the old boys circumstances he's not going to live like that any longer. SHAME ON YOU AGE CONCERN.

This national charity

This national charity, like so many, is set up to maximise income. It exists to exist. The organisational and financial structure is designed to extract money in any way they can. There is a skeleton 'service' provided which only exists to justify their existence. It's not true charity as a normal person understands the term.

I was a Volunteer for Age UK for a short period of 3 months .I thought I was giving up 25 hours a week of my precious time each week for a good cause
I have worked for two charities prior to this one for the past few years .The Manageress of Age UK,was nothing but a bully.
Her behaviour and tone of voice towards myself was shocking many times. If she was stressed ,she would vent her anger at me.
I was forced to leave ,due to her behaviour.I have left and are going back to Cancer Research UK ,where I'd previously volunteered.
I loved my role at Age UK and I am very sad that I had no choice to leave.

Shameful lack of service

So shocked by the lack of service, incomprehensibly bad service , biased , whitewash and gaslighting patients. Doctor referred me for support and the service was useless, bossy , unavailable and then shut down the complaint by discharging me. they then made up a lot of nonsense to say how good they had performed ! I have never experienced people who are so bad at listening, so biased and created more stress and actual panic, with there non service. How dare they pay staff to bully people, And actually gaslight clients. id like to know f any pf the workers are even trained as they come across so ridiculously unprofessional . I see this service is in general massively failing vulnerable people.Shameful.

My Mum used to have a phone call from the befriending service which she looked forward too. She was so lonely that she talked about wanting to give up so they withdrew the phone service from her. They rang me to tell me so I had the tough job of explaining it to her. This made her more lonely and depressed...she gave up eating and passed away 6 weeks later. I will never forgive such companies that are meant to help the elderly that severely let her down. Disgusting.

The worst of the worst charity I have…

The worst of the worst charity I have ever deal with at Kiln Farm, Milton Keynes.
The management are awful for the following reasons:
- Poor customer and very rude
- Terrible communication skills. They don’t listen to you and just cut you off to heard them.
- They don’t keep track of money in and out
- Managers should be more knowledgeable of how to run the charity. They clearly need to go back to college.

Had a credit note for a certain amount and and they were not able to calculate right due to not enough records on their side.

I need to speak with someone about this. I have evidences to prove they made a mistake.

Don’t pay extra for next day delivery

I am caring for my mother who is reaching the end of her life. There have been 2 occasions recently when we have needed something urgently for her. On both occasions I ordered from Age UK and paid extra for next day delivery. Despite paying for this neither order arrived the next day. Although they did eventually arrive I didn’t get what I paid for. I would normally take this up with the company but right now I don’t have the time or the energy.
