Alan Ranger is an award winning photographer based in the Midlands, UK. He has developed his personal style after more than 15 years’ experience: through expression, perception and a deep understanding of creative intention. Disciplined yet inventive, his inimitable approach allows him to turn unremarkable moments in to extraordinary images, depicting the remarkable journey through life. Alan’s landscape photography work is not merely a snapshot of what we see; it mirrors how we feel. A glance at his landscape photography illustrates this concept - capturing the energy of the land and depicting the emotion of that specific moment in time. He says "I love the beauty of a landscape image, not because of what or where it is but because it reflects who we are and our individual connection to land, sea, sky and light."

Very helpful course
Very helpful course. Alan really gets you to try and think for yourself and enable you to get the most out of the time that you have. He gives you honest and constructive feedback when viewing the photos that you've taken, and is happy to answer any questions that you have. Highly recommend.
Enjoyable morning workshop at Batsford…
Enjoyable morning workshop at Batsford Arboretum, helped by the sunny weather and photogenic autumn colours. Alan on hand to give ideas for subject matter and settings and answer questions. Unfortunately the Covid situation meant it wasn't really possible for him to review images on the day, although he did provide feedback on some of my photos later by email.

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon in Batsford Arboretum, learning the art of composition and the use of camera settings .
Autumn workshop
Alan aims to get you to think about your photo and what it is you are trying to achieve. Whilst I have always looked to frame a photo, I tended to make it far too busy so that you don't know what to focus on. This was lesson one in an extremely informative 3-4 hours. Highly recommended.
A great day spent with Alan at Batsford…
A wonderful day spent with Alan at Batsford Arboretum. Loads of useful photographic tips which helped me to capture those beautiful autumn colours. Great fun and great teaching. Thank you.
Batsford arboretum 25th October 2020
I have been interested in photography for a few years now, but have never had any tuition. I’m really glad I attended this workshop, because Alan managed to teach me so much in one morning, that has made me realise how much more rewarding photography can be if I take my time.
I am due to attend another workshop with Alan, and I am really looking forward to it.
Great morning.
I had a lovely morning. Allowed me to have thinking time and made me think carefully about how I was going to compose my shots.
URBAN ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP
URBAN ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP - a wet night in Coventry which didn't detract from the excellent tuition and interesting evening.
Would recommend, very informative.
Get off auto course
I started the 5 weeks course for beginners and the first lesson was excellent. Alan explained in very simple terms what we had to know to get off auto and this allowed to improve the experience with my camera straight away. Looking forward to the next lesson!
Beginner class
The beginner class was great, really informative and the homework was engaging. My only minor criticism is that there is a lot of information to digest each week and a fortnightly class would have been preferred. Alan is very knowledgeable and passionate about his work and I would highly recommend the course.
Helpful beginner tuition
Very helpful tuition pitched a right level for a beginner student
Highly Recommended
This course is highly recommended if, like me, you have a digital camera and have no idea what you are doing! Getting off auto and understanding the basics of aperture, shutter speed and ISO were really well explained by Alan. The assignments help you to focus (!) your learning and improve your understanding of composition and exposure. Personally I could have done with more time between the lessons as weekly classes and managing a busy full time job was a challenge. Although I understand the difficulties in managing that during Covid. In relation to Covid - Alan has made a lot of adjustments to his classes to make them Covid secure and has clearly thought it through very carefully.
Poor planning with a wasted day
Having attended a previous course I was looking forward to 2 days photographing in Cornwall. I was fully aware of the covid restrictions but did not expect to spend the whole of the first day and the early morning shoot of the second day on the same stretch of rocky beach, The early morning shoot was a bit of a damp squid as we got to the beach and the light did not hit the rocks for another hour which meant only a few minutes to shoot before it was breakfast time. Then on to a shoot at a lighthouse. On arrival it turned out that the footpath to the interesting section of cliffs had been closed to the public for some time. Then on to the next shoot which was 30 miles away. it was however on the last bank Holiday Sunday of the year and with temperatures in the mid/high twenties the roads were jammed as was the beach we were supposed to shoot (no surprise there). Alan got stuck in a flood and called the day off without even getting to the venue VERY POOR PLANNING ALL ROUND. I have sent Alan a more detailed e-mail on the overall poor planning

Very enjoyable and instructive
Very enjoyable and instructive. I will take on board the tips I received.
Chesterton Windmill
My second workshop. Lovely location (Chesterton Windmill). The weather was kind and we had a reasonable sunset with some lovely colours. I was helped with understanding aperture priority (normally I use full manual) and metering modes. I was given guidance on how to use bracketing and how to find shortcuts rather than having to go into the menu each time. My only regret was that we didn’t get closer to the windmill to take some different perspectives.
Informative and practical.
A good workshop
A good workshop, run safely and managed across several diverse locations. Enjoyable and supportive despite challenging weather conditions.
Alan organised a great Workshop in…
Alan organised a great Workshop in Anglesey. Well thought out to maximise the time we were there. It was great to photograph the lighthouses that I have always wanted to visit and although the weather didn't always play ball we were lucky to capture some great images. Alan is always on hand to provide help and instruction as and when needed. Recommended !

With Packwood house as a great back drop For a 121 lesson with Alan. We walked the grounds
And around the lake taking some of the best images I’ve ever taken with my camera and with Alan’s help and guidance I was able to see my images a little clearer.
Thanks Alan
A very informative lesson
Great help
Alan is very knowledgeable, experienced and very happy to explain any aspect that you're having problems with. He explained really well several areas that I had been confused about for a long time and so this will now help my progression.
This is my first workshop with Alan and once my finances get back to normal after covid 19 I will look to book more.
