Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 131 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with frequent and significant delays, often leading to missed connections. Customers consistently reported issues with customer service, describing staff as rude, unhelpful, and difficult to communicate with. Reviewers felt the high prices charged were not justified by the unreliable service, dirty conditions, and lack of basic amenities. However, some customers also noted positive experiences with certain friendly and professional staff members. People appreciated the scenic views and destinations offered on some routes. A few also found specific train cars or accommodations, like roomettes or sleeper bedrooms, to be comfortable.

Do better.

Literally have not once arrived at my destination at the scheduled time. It's always been a 4 or more hour delay. At this point it is absolutely ridiculous.

Poor customer service & Amtrak employees :(

I had a horrible experience traveling from New York Penn Station to Washington DC. Already frustrated with the busyness of Penn station, that was already expected. What I DID NOT EXPECT was the rude and sad excuse for customer service I received from William Granados! He served me a drink that had something floating in it. When I asked for a new one, he gave me a hard time about it. Not to mention, he treated the young lady he worked with very poorly. I’m very concerned about how Amtrak vets their employees. Disgusted.

I experienced two 5 1/2 hour delays.

I experienced two 5 1/2 hour delays going from Longview, TX to Kansas City Union Station. It was horrible, nasty, dirty, and the employees were unprofessional. Why work in a public place and then act like you don't want to be bothered with the customers?Especially when we're the ones made to feel uncomfortable because of being delayed several hours at a time. I'm never traveling on Amtrak ever again. I'd much rather pay to catch a plane. At least planes are clean and on time more often than not. Amtrak sucks.

A Complete Breakdown in Communication and Contingency Planning

I have used Amtrak several times before and, until now, my experiences were generally positive. Staff in Chicago once helped me rebook after a missed train, which I appreciated. However, my most recent trip from St. Louis has completely undermined my trust in Amtrak.

My train was delayed—understandable, but there was zero communication from Amtrak. No emails, no app updates, no announcements, and no staff at the station to answer questions. The ticket windows were closed, and there wasn’t even a screen with departure info. Calling customer support meant waiting on hold for 30 minutes, only to be told they had no information. After boarding, the train’s onboard computer failed just past Alton, IL, and we were stranded for hours. Texting support was pointless: automated replies, then silence.

Initially, I added a star for the onboard staff, who remained patient and professional despite having no real support from corporate. However, after being stuck since 12:30 p.m. (it’s now almost 3:30 p.m.), Amtrak only just arranged for a “sister train” to continue our route. This is basic contingency planning that should have happened much sooner. Meanwhile, my attempt to use the “text with us” feature resulted in a “one moment please” message and then nothing for over an hour.

This entire experience has been a complete failure in both communication and customer care. I know Amtrak can do better, but after this, I seriously question whether I can trust them again. If you need timely updates and reliable service, be prepared for disappointment.

Despite this disappointing experience, I am open to seeing how Amtrak responds and whether they will make this right. I will update my review based on their follow-up and any steps they take to address these issues.

Ive taken the Amtrak twice. It has been an issue both times. We left an hour later than before and than waited for an hour for Amtrak to inspect a bridge that should have been inspected. I work for one of the biggest base in the Army I will recommend them to be black listed!!!!

The absolute most worst experience…

The absolute most worst experience ever…. The staff was rude and didn’t help me with my luggage as they seen me struggling, I was in dead zones for most of my trip so I barely got signal and the WiFi was bullshit as well so I spent most of my trip basically with no phone. I’m never taking this shit again

Amtrak Cardinal

The train was 10 hours behind schedule. The crew was not welcoming and did not help us with loading our luggage. It was a long day for them, but they still should be professional and courteous. All the crew were unfriendly, except one person. Most of the crew were focused on their cell phones on board. The dinning car food and drinks were over priced and average quality. The cars were old, worn out looking and the floors were dirty and littered. I was quite disappointed since my Amtrak experience several years ago was more positive. It's like the employees don't want your business and could care less about their job. No wonder many people don't take Amtrak. I was hoping to start using Amtrak again, but now have big doubts. WiFi was spotty. Sad, very sad. Europe and Asia have such better train systems.

Never again!

I have been riding Amtrak several times a year for many years, despite consistently bad service and late trains. This will be the last time. I was scheduled for an 8:10 am train this morning only to wake up to a message saying the train was overbooked and they wanted to move me to an earlier train. The email gave me a phone number to call. The woman who answered was rude and when I expressed frustration that they oversold a train her response was that the airlines do it more often, as if that makes it okay. They rebooked me on a 7:04 train and I had to rush to get there in time. I had paid to have my tiny, 10lb, very quiet and well behaved dog join me. A conductor saw me board with her in a sling carrier, asked if I had a pet pass and when I said yes, she allowed me to board. A couple of hours later another employee saw her and told me that I would have to get off the train bc it wasn’t the right kind of carrier. They had THE POLICE escort me off the train in Wilmington DE, a city I’ve never been to and where I know no one. They were willing to leave me stranded with no way to get either home or to my destination. Thankfully there were some wonderful staff members there as well as the Amtrak police who were apologetic and helpful but I had to buy a new carrier (with Amtrak branding) and a new ticket to finally get where I was going several hours late. I frankly wouldn’t be surprised if this whole thing was just a ploy to force me to buy their carrier. I told the employees that I hoped Amtrak treated their employees better than their customers and they just sadly shook their heads. This will be my last ever trip with Amtrak and I will be disputing all the credit card charges to get my money back from this ridiculous, greedy company. They are a failing company and this is the reason why. They treat their customers like crap and apparently their employees too.

If you have never ridden a long…

If you have never ridden a long distance train trip before and are excited about the romance of a train trip, standby. I rode from Chicago to Seattle, the Empire Builder. 48 hours of screaming babies. Young mothers with no idea how to deal with a screaming child. All day all night. Remember trains run behind every plant, warehouse, scrapyard, rusted wrecked stacks of car trucks buses and mountain of old tires in the USA. Really not a lot to see until you reach the mountains in Montana. The observation car is packed. So you plan on the mountains in California. But we stopped in Spokane Wa. And they disconnected the observation car. So what should have been the most interesting and beautiful part of the trip, we spent sitting in our seats with limited views. On our return trip, they reconnected the observation car in Spokane. The outside of the car was so dirty, it was impossible to clearly see anything through the windows. It was like trying to look through mud. So limited view of anything worth seeing. Amtrak advertises about the fine dining. Well unless you bought into a sleeper car, your not aloud, so pack some groceries. They have a small convenience store that sells a cup of coffee for 3.00. If you know where I’m going. And the guy that ran it on our return trip to Chicago was a total ass. Big John!. I washed one of the tables in the observation car 5 times, and my cleaning cloth was still coming up dirty. The bathrooms are at best nasty. Although there are plenty of them. Little to no hand soap. So pack your own.

AVOID AMTRAK IF SCHEDULE MATTERSMy cycling partner from the C&O Canal…

My cycling partner from the C&O Canal Trail has been on the train from Harper’s Ferry to Cumberland, MD overnight. The train was originally delayed because a dining car caught fire. Now the major delay has been flooded out tracks. After everyone has been held for a combined 10 hour delay, Amyrak just announce the cafeteria car is open and it accepts cash or credit cards. THEY PROVIDE THE STRANDED PASSENGERS NO FOOD!

I missed my train ride and when I called their customer services, I was treated very badly. The customer service treated me with a lack of attention, respect, and rudeness. The tone of the person used on the other side of the phone really pissed me off. When I finally got on the other train l, I got to my seat and when I was just about to relax, they told me that I couldn’t sit there and that there were three or more people; but there were no signs. It was very inconvenience to move again. The overall experience was horrible today! Unbelievable!

I would give zero stars if I could

I would give zero stars if I could! My son was traveling alone (he is 19) from Woodbridge to Norfolk. In Woodbridge he was directed to his train by an employee. Once on the train his ticket was scanned by another employee. Here is the problem, he was directed to the wrong train! Never once did either employee let him know that he was on the wrong train until he arrived in Richmond Virginia. When they got there he was informed he needed to leave the train because this was the last stop. He panicked of course, he was forced off in a city almost 2 hours away from home. He called me and I immediately left to pick him up. How do 2 separate employees mess up so bad and basically tell a kid tough luck figure it out? In the chaos his suit was left hanging in a closet and of course it will never be seen again. I called Amtrak the next day and got a wonderful woman on the phone who questioned how this would even happen especially with his ticket being scanned. She had to transfer me to customer relations and he opened a case, the conductor had not even made a report of what transpired. I asked for a refund for the $47.00 ticket just based on the fact that they dropped the ball (yes my son should have triple checked but he trusted the employees) I was told no refund because he did in fact ride a train. I told him I would leave a bad review of my experience and then was offered a refund which I declined because I was over it at that point. I just want everyone to be careful especially if you are a young first time solo traveler. Do not trust the words of these employees because they will steer you wrong and leave you stranded. Never again Amtrak!

The worst and rudest staff I have ever came across was on Amtrak. When I was a college student trying to hit up my ramen on the train and he yelled at me saying no. I can tell he was a very miserable man and hates his job. Highly not recommend Amtrak! This happened many years ago but still left a trauma in me.

Train from Pittsburgh to Savannah

Train from Pittsburgh to Savannah. The seats were comfy. Most employees were nice except one. I was trying to look at menu in cafe car. The worker said the line is on other side. I said o just want to look at menu. She started speaking very stern like I did something wrong. I s said I am just reading the menu she raised her voice at me. I was pissed and embarrassed. I returned to my seat. I did tell another worker what happened. I had a breakfast sandwich early it was ice cold. If I would have stayed away from getting food and beverage. The trip would have been nice. I am still on train ready to get off early so I don't speak me mind
