What a shame
What a shame, that this experience proved to be a very unpleasant one! The place itself is naturally beautiful, nestled at the bottom of Pendle Hill, but the woman who we initially spoke to on the phone, came up to us on our first night of arrival. We were next to the electric hookups. This was our first time using electric hookup and we did not anticipate using very much other than to charge our phones. The woman said "Well you can't say you are only going to use a small amount, you're either using it or not". I said we'll use it. I thought she was rather abrupt as I just thought it might be on a pay as you go meter, but clearly that wasn't the case and she told me the price for using that spot with hookup was £18.00 a night. So I paid her the £36.00 cash. On Saturday we were out all day, when we got back we could see the hook up had been pulled out and the tent appeared to have been opened. We assumed, that we probably should have unplugged it whilst we weren't there. We proceeded to cook our food on the barbecue and use the gas for cooking. We plugged in our phones and an electric light. The showers and toilets were very basic and very dirty. I took photographs to evidence this, but when the mop and mop bucket is completely dried out and the broom in the corner of the dish washing and baby changing room, has cobwebs on it, you can be sure it's not been used in a long time! But we were happy to overlook that as the location was beautiful. On the day we packed up (Sunday 11th May) the woman, who had suggested she was the partner of the owner, drove down the lane and stopped. She popped out the car and shouted, something about having to pay for hookup, to which I said we've already paid you. She said, you've not paid for the electric hookup, you said you were not going to use it. I said "We clearly stated we were going to use it". She said it's more money for hook up, I've only charged you for camping without hook up. I said "Well that's funny, as your website states £10 a night without hookup". She was not happy and said "Well I'll change the website! There's been some misunderstanding". I said "Not on my part there hasn't". She rather rudely said "Are you going today"? I said "Yes we are and your shower block could do with a clean"! She drove off. I was absolutely furious with her attitude. There were only 2 other campers a young couple and their children and I asked how much they had been charged and they said £36.00 for 2 nights. I then approached the couple in the Motorhome (who were using hook up) and they too had been charged £36.00 for 2 nights! In fact they had noticed her the day before, ripping out our hookup. We won't be returning and John Howarth the owner tried to pass himself off as a farm hand when I asked him who owned the farm, he said it was George Hargreaves. I asked if that was his wife or partner and he said he couldn't disclose that. John Howarth the owner is on Facebook and when I saw him I realised that was the man I had been speaking to today. We won't be returning.
