We have a huge 1970s fireplace that runs from the floor to the vaulted ceiling with no mantle to "break it up"— and it's made of large concrete veneer stones that are shades of black, brown and orange with black mortar in between. It's a real beast of a fireplace and really darkens the room. In an effort to lighten it up, but keep the stones looking natural, we used multiple shades of the chalk paint to paint over the stones and mortar (mostly "Original" and Old Ochre mixed with small amounts of Arles and Honfleur, as well as French Linen and Coco. We used Country Grey for the mortar color). It looks like a completely different room! The fireplace now blends in quietly to the rest of the room instead of looming over it. I wish I could upload a before and after photo to share with this review because it really is an amazing transformation. The stones took the chalk paint really well and because of the paint being chalk, they have a dull finish, like real stone. We even dry brushed some lighter colors over the darker stones just to bring out their crevices and make them look more variegated like real rocks. I would highly recommend this paint to anyone looking to update a fireplace. Because our stones are made of concrete that has been molded to look like stones, they may have accepted the paint differently/better than real stones, so that's the one thing I would keep that in mind if you are painting real stones or bricks. Also, if you have any type of sealant on your stones, they will not accept the paint as well.

For ease of use AND professional-looking results, Annie Sloan Satin is my go-to. I’ve used it multiple times myself and recommend it frequently to others.

Just a disclaimer- I might not be ‘verified’ as I didn’t buy it directly from Annie Sloan, I purchased from a local authorized dealer. I REALLY wanted to like this paint and I shelled out the money to buy a few different colors. The first one I tried was ‘Olive’. First it doesn’t look anything like olive, more like a light sage. Yes, I’ve been told I can buy the ‘dark’ or ‘black’ wax to make it darker but that’s ridiculous the color should look like the color without having to add anything, period. My second qualm is that the underlying wood will come through no matter what you do, so it’s not an opaque paint, you’ll always see a distressed ‘rub-through’. I used two coats of paint and three coats of wax and still you can see! I wish someone told me this before I spent over $200 on paint and brushes. I heard Joanna Gaines has a line that I might try and if that doesn’t work, I’ll have to revert back to simple interior paints, at least I know what I’m getting.
