Don't waste your money enrolling on this Love to Learn Beginners Art Course
Both my husband and I enrolled on the Love to Learn Beginners Art Course, at a cost of over £400 for both of us. Not a small amount of money. The course started on 12 January and was promising. We decided not to come back after half-term because it simply was not meeting the stated curriculum and the tutor planned for the session after half-term to be printing. On the first session we were told to copy our fist. As hands are the hardest things to draw, it hardly felt appropriate, but we carried on. There have been some helpful sessions but sometimes the tutor is sitting and working on her computer for most of the session. We were shown pieces of art from other students so we could copy the techniques. We are not the only ones who are dissatisfied, but some people are unable to say.
The curriculum on the website states:
“Art for Beginners (22/23) Course Overview It will help you to refine your garment construction skills taking them to the next level. WHAT GARMENT?
What topics are covered? Drawing from observation; Mark making & materials ? graphite, charcoal & inks; Proportion, perspective and techniques of looking; Colour theory; Tonal painting techniques in acrylic; Painting applications ? watercolour, impasto and mark making; Looking at key artists relating to your projects; Mixed media and texture; Developing preparatory studies for final works.”
The following was not covered:
Proportion and perspective (fundamental I would say)
Colour Theory - not covered, again fundamental
Tonal painting techniques in acrylic – we asked and were told it “might” be covered
Painting applications – none, we haven’t used any paints
Watercolour and impasto – we were told watercolour painting would not be covered when we got to the course
Mixed media and texture – covered in the sense of doing some lino printing, but that’s about all
We didn’t expect to spend ages on drawing from crushed costa paper cups, used toothpaste tubes, and other limited objects from the art room.
The course content was not as stated. The tutor is very nice but there were no lesson plans, and no handouts which could have been put on Moodle for us to download.
We know this is not the usual standard from Bath College, because we are also on another course, which is well-organised, inspiring, and covers everything that was promised and more.
We requested a 50% refund but to date 27.03.23, have not even received a reply, despite an email to the college manager/principle.
