Entering the job market last year, I realised that my CV had not had a proper overhaul for almost 15 years and so, despite having had numerous updates, still read like the graduate CV I'd painstakingly put together in the hunt for my first 'real job'.

When I was asking a colleague about what agencies he was signed up with, he suggested I get a ghost writer to author my CV and pointed me in the direction of Bespoke CV Services' website.

The website itself is packed with good quality content explaining how the process works. Having had a read though, I selected the package most suited to my needs. I also added the LinkedIn Profile option which in my view is the most valuable element of the service and something I would not have gone without. Employers do look and inconsistencies between your CV and LinkedIn will not act in your favour. Payment was also easy and my only criticism is that the website looks a bit homemade. Had I not been referred by a colleague, I might have been a little more reticent to part with my money so easily. There is however, an email provided if you have any questions about the service.

The biggest plus was that, once signed up, I was dealing with James, the writer, directly. This really adds value to the service and he was able to tailor aspects of the service to my individual needs. He provided me with the CV in a format where I could easily remove or add a photo depending on whether I felt it was best suited to the application. He was also able to advise me on how to update my LinkedIn settings to avoid alerting colleagues at work that my profile was undergoing a major update and arouse suspicions that I was looking to move on.

What I would say is that it is very much a two way process and you get out what you put in. Despite being able to respond well to requests outside the initial brief, the service very much does what it says on the tin and you need to be few steps into the job search process to really use it effectively. The process is not dissimilar to signing up with an agency and you need to be prepared to share a lot of information to make it work.

I needed to delay a bit while I found good examples of the types of job I wanted to apply for, so James could then best align the CV to these. If you are still at the part of the process where you haven't decided where to target your job search then you might not see the results you want. Additionally, the service isn't going to magically make you a good interviewer, instantly grant you skills you don't have yet or get you a job you love.

I genuinely think James could compliment the service by offering something along the lines of a career consultancy package which could help people improve their interview skills or decide on and plan a career change in advance of tackling their CV. I certainly would have been interested in something like this.

Overall, I'm very happy with the service. I haven't received any bad feedback about the CV and it has almost certainly improved my hit rate with getting interviews. I actually ended up having to turn down some simply because I had too many and it wasn't long before I was offered a position which I accepted. Thank you Bespoke CV Services.
