I used BookMyForex ahead of an international trip to China. Three specific experiences — one at the counter and two on the phone — left me disappointed enough to write this.
Overcharged on CNY cash
Bought Chinese Yuan (CNY) in cash and was charged ₹16.5 per Yuan. The standard interbank forex rate at the time was around ₹14. That's a ₹2.5 per unit markup with zero transparency at the point of sale. On any meaningful cash purchase, this adds up quietly. No one flags it, no one explains it. You find out after the fact.
Rep Ayur — Asked a question, got a sermon (Call dated June 9)
Called to understand why CNY on the BookMyForex platform was priced ₹2 higher compared to other currencies. A fair question for any customer. Rep Ayur's response was that it is "BookMyForex's limitation" — fine, I can accept that. What followed was not fine. He then proceeded to tell me that "everybody has their own limitations." I had to explicitly tell him on the call that I did not reach out to be lectured and that if he needed to preach, he should find someone else. A customer asking a pricing question deserves a straight answer, not unsolicited life advice delivered with an attitude.
Rep Abhishek — Paid, uploaded documents, heard nothing (Call dated June 11)
Made a payment for USD forex card reload, received payment confirmation, uploaded all required documents through the app, and then waited. No update, no call, no email. I had to call in myself — the day before my flight — to find out that one document was still pending verification. Rep Abhishek only initiated action after I chased. This is a fundamental service failure. When a customer has already paid and is travelling imminently, proactive communication is not optional. It is the bare minimum.
Summary
BookMyForex's rates and platform concept are competitive. But the on-ground experience has serious gaps — opaque cash pricing, poor customer-facing attitude, and zero proactive communication after payment. If you're using them close to a travel date, build in extra time and plan to do all the chasing yourself. Don't assume no news is good news.
