4star low end of luxury

We enjoyed our stay at Celtic manor but for a 5 star experience some things let it down.
Staff were excellent and really helpful, kids loved the activities staff.
Room was not the one we booked and they told us ours had been given away and they couldn’t put us anywhere else. It was fine but a bit dated. It didn’t feel luxurious.
Food was good but not amazing.
Parking was expensive and some quite far away.
Great activities for the kids who were both very happy.
The pool was lovely but booking was difficult. We also arrived early as the pool looked quiet but we were told we could go in early incase people that booked showed up…they didn’t.
Evenings were a bit boring as no entertainment so we ended up going to a great Spanish place nearby.

Bookings system and refunds

This place is something else when it comes to bookings and customer service....which is practically non existing. You need to ring to make a spa booking, you are put through several other numbers and if you are lucky you won't get cut off before making the reservation. Cancellation- impossible to get a correct refund - again, put through many departments, no one bothers to answer. Whether it's a spa booking or golf, be ready for a battle to get your money back. (We got refunded for one person instead of two for spa). My husband had to ring several times and email and talk to people in person to get a refund for another booking.

Once we sat down for a quick lunch...sandwiches and chips...an hour later after chasing several times they told us that chef went out to get some chips....I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. What we got in the end (no chips) was on the house. Wasn't just us - people around us had their orders massively delayed.

Maybe they should upgrade to an easy online bookings of spa and also transparent refunds system. For now - it all put me off any future bookings and outings there.

GOING DOWN HILL FAST

My Stay at the Celtic Manner started when i parked out front to unload my case. The concierge came over and said " Please can you keep this area clear this is reserved for valet parking. They pay £20.00 for the privilege"
I was stunned I thought he was coming over to help me unload. I was wrong.
Then I checked in asked to use pool and was told the pool was closed for maintenance. Disappointing but these things happen. Got to my room 1001 Well it was a disgrace. It was dirty and needed redecorating. Please see my photo's below. I called reception and my room was changed. [ But why did the even put me in that room in the first instance? ] On my way to my new room got chatting to a couple in the lift and said they really enjoyed there swim. Again stunned i called the health spa and guess what! the pool was open and was never closed for maintenance. What is going on with the Celtic Manor Hotel.
I did mention the issues I experienced but they just don't care. They have plenty of customers. But not for long if there staff continue to treat there customers the way my wife I were treated. Who ever is in charge there needs to address the obvious training needs of the staff. Its a disgrace. I have stayed in the Celtic Manor many times. This stay was booked for us as an Anniversary gift. Quite frankly what should have been a pleasant stay was completely ruined.

Relaxing afternoon

My friend and I had a cream tea in the Olive Tree to celebrate big birthdays. it was a wonderful experience and the staff especially Shah made us feel really special. The ambience and decor all helped and the pianist at the grand piano was the the icing on the cake.

Let me start with the positives

Let me start with the positives: lovely looking, eye pleasing and well kept surroundings. Surroundings seem so peaceful. This is a beautiful building.
Staff - Overall were pleasant and helpful
Parked up outside resort hotel to offload luggage which was then taken to our allocated room by the porter whilst parking our vehicle. Room keycard given upon check in. I also queried at reception if an upgrade was possible but was informed there were nothing available which I accepted. I entered the room it appeared dark and superficially clean however, after a thorough check I observed the bath tub had a brown stain which in my opinion looked like faecal matter (will try & upload picture if possible). I was disgusted with this find and I immediately went down and informed reception who in my opinion, looked at me in disbelief until I showed them a picture. I was informed that a housekeeper will be sent to clean the room/bath tub but I did not feel happy at this point as this should have been done prior to our arrival. Additionally, I was informed earlier that day (via email) that our room was ready (not). I continued in my persistence for a room change and informed that there were no rooms available. I again requested an upgrade to which i was informed that they had non available. I then requested a reduction for my room or room change for which there seemed to be some reluctance to grant this. However, It wasn't until I mentioned that if i shared this picture on social media it wouldn't portray a favourable image of this hotel resort. At this point reception staff "managed " to find an alternative room. Following a thorough check `i accepted this reallocated room but there were still flaws. The room is tired looking with staining on the carpet (pic taken). Someone needs to do a thorough check on the rooms to ensure high standards are maintained. I even thought of checking the mattress but I know for sure if I found something I would not be lying on the bed so therefore I opted not to take this action.
Breakfast:
Positives - There's a wide selection of breakfast options available...nice!
Negatives- Sausages were not tasteful and were hard and chewy. I thought this was a one-off but this remained the same throughout my entire stay.
Again, I repeat this is a lovely hotel but needs a little more attention to detail when welcoming guests.
I also forgot to mention the meal I ordered (room service was terrible and although I'm not keen on Mac Donalds this was more tasteful. For the rest of our stay we made the decision to eat at Nandos.
Telephone answering service is very poor: you're left holding on in excess of 20 mins. However if you call to make a reservation the call is answered much quicker.
I think in general this hotel needs to be re assessed on it's star ratings!
This hotel only just managed to get a 3* rating from me and this was based on the beautiful surroundings or else it would have been 2*.

Dear Sir / Madam,

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to you to raise an issue about: Hotel resort

The issue that I have experienced was: I have been Trying to book a Special Full Spa day for my Fiancé and I for our Birthday, so I have been trying, In Advance, for 2 Weeks DAILY to hook this day which wouldn’t be Cheap which isn’t an issue but had to be Special, which was supposed to include , Massages, Facials, Food there and Drinks and even Meals in the Evening. It’s Absolutely Ridiculous Front of house and booking on THE TELEPHONE As it Mostly Les to the Phone NEVER EVER being picked up and ANSWERED to me in the SPA Part, then the Main desk when I rang up CONSTANTLY.. DAILY.. Would either Cut you off by pressing you Through to Spa department line which Again. NEVER PICKED UP!! Then when I Continuously Rang Main Desk they either be Rude, or Put the Phone down on me whilst I was talking and trying to Explain why I can’t book or get through!! I mean, it’s Supposed to be a Luxury Hotel I am told is it Not…? Well I’ll be honest , I’ve stayed in Places all over the Uk and most parts of the World and I have NEVER EVER COME ACROSS SUCH A PATHETIC EXCUSE OF A TEAM For booking, Customer Service and Politeness in my Entire Life!! It is Shocking too see the Least. Really Poor. To think our Day would have Cost me around the £400/£500 Mark and they Cannot be bothered to say the Least!

It occurred on: 2023-08-22

This meant that Frustrating , Put off by even wanting to ever go or Stay there now to say the Least. I wouldn’t Waste our Time.

I’d Like a Phone Call from Hotel or Area Manager on this as too why it’s So Shocking and has Such Terrible Working/Answering Staff there??

I look forward to your prompt response on this matter. As recommended by Trading Standards, I would like to keep a complete record of my case, so please reply to this email address.

Yours faithfully,

Nicholas Cox.

Ashamed to be Welsh

As this hotel is one of the first things you see as you enter South wales it makes me ashamed to be Welsh. Very poorly maintained. Mouldy bathrooms. 75% of lockers out of order in the health spa, Lifts out of order, a lot of people giving up and taking the stairs. How can they call themselves 5 star? 2 star maximum. The £20 charge just to leave the car park in the morning was the icing on the cake…..left the hotel feeling exhausted and ripped off.

They just don't care

Upon seeing my review Celtic Manor emailed me inviting me to contact them to try to resolve the issue. That seemed promising or so I thought.

I called them as I wrongly thought I owed them the opportunity to resolve things. What a waste of time that was. I was informed of their booking policy which I had never seen, apparently the booking policy of which i had never had sight of said that £20 per guest would be deducted from credit card for any guests that did not show or cancelled less than 48 hours prior to the reservation date, also £20 would be deducted for any guest to re-arrange a booking.

I requested sight of this booking policy which they did email me and I suggested that they make this clear and visible to customers when making a booking. As it certainly was not clear to me and it would have made me think twice about booking.

I have since notified all friends, family and work colleagues who have visited the Celtic Manor about this policy and non of them were aware if it, well they are now.

I am fully aware that the hospitality industry has had a difficult time what with the pandemic and the cost of living crisis but so have an awful lot of other industries and individuals. I really think this policy is counter productive. I personally will never book anything with the Celtic Manor again and I have unsubscribe from their marketing emails. Good riddance Celtic Manor.

Took my daughter for for 18th birthday

Took my daughter for for 18th birthday, initially everything looked lovely, robes were nice, towels looked cheap and were small and thin compared to other spa’s I’ve been too that were cheaper than £180.
The receptionist showed us the changing rooms and explained the general direction of the pool/treatment room/food area but didn’t mention the gym or fitness classes that as a full day paid user we had full access to, (we only found these later in the day when it was too late to use them, and with no plunge pool and with the details below the day was somewhat limited for the money paid.

The pool, bubble pool and jacuzzi area were over run by under 12’s screaming and running around. One mum had a young baby with active chicken pox in the pool! How this was even allowed was beyond me.
The area we were directed to for our spa day lunch was also the area the families were using so no respite there either, not really what we wanted from a relaxing spa day.

Then came our treatment time, out came all of the beauticians and they only called for my daughter, (we had a duo room booked for the same treatment) a mad rush then ensued to set up a duo room to give us both the pre booked treatment! 10 minutes late we started and that was at least amazing!

We tried to finish the day in one of the two quiet rooms but had to swap to the other as other guests kept taking phone calls!

All in all if you want a relaxing spa day I would avoid the Celtic Manor in Newport, and opt for a none hotel set up that is over 18’s only and makes sure that the guests can fully relax as they wish to when attending a spa day, especially at nearly £200!

Other then reception staff, one lifeguard and the treatment girls there was no one keeping an eye on the madness unfolding with kids running riot, people on phones and general rule breaking meaning the chance to relax was minimal.

First stay at the Celtic for three…

First stay at the Celtic Manor House for three nights, good points the staff were excellent, bad points our room 211 had moth eaten carpet with moths flying around on entry, plug in sink wouldn't seal so had to run the water to have a shave, first breakfast in the olive tree was excellent, the two following mornings in the Pad absolutely awful. Luke warm coffee, uncooked scrambled egg,and ordinary sliced bread, all the food was luke warm, very disappointed, not very good value. Not what I expected.Told staff about the moth infestation which has been there for some time but not very interested response.

Not one to moan normally…

Not one to moan normally…

We waited 30 minutes and asked twice for drinks at the bar only to be told to wait for table service that never came, so we left without being served. It wasn’t even that busy so no need to make us wait.

Spa experience was lovely, can’t complain on that. Lunch provided by spa wasn’t great, we hardly ate it as it’s wasn’t the best.

We did have chipped tableware for coffees which was surprising.

There was a pile of rubbish at the car parking payment areas so not a great end to the day.

One of the worst experiences in a hotel…

One of the worst experiences in a hotel for a long time, massively overpriced, run down and in need of updating. Went there on our anniversary expectations were high for the price and reputation but we could not be more disappointed. Long wait for the lifts and with a 34 week pregnant wife the stairs to the 9th floor were not happening. The spa was basic, no way of locking the lockers as 90% were not working. Air conditioning in the room didn't work and we did not sleep a minute due to the temperature, reception did not care. I could not wait to check out the hotel. We left early. Then finally when we checked in even thi we paid in advance I was debited £100 incase I charged to the room. Over 3 weeks later and still haven't had it back. Contacted them numerous times and they've done nothing to give me my money back, they dont reply to your emails or give a monkeys. Were now taking it further. There are better hotels so avoid.

Looks good superficially

Looks good superficially. Major problems with building. In fact dangerous. Queues for lifts. Not enough for number clients. Stairs hidden. Huge problem in fire. Amazed passed fire assessment. Confusion with labelling of floors. 6th floor is 2nd, I think. Building needs a rethink. Sauna and steam rooms separate for men and women. Both not hot. Food is ok. Avoid PAD restaurant. Average and expensive. Basically it's a faded glory place that needs a rethink. But if you like golf and have no taste it's for you

Disgraceful golf courses!

Disgraceful golf courses!

The courses were waterlogged and like a bog, should not be open for play. Informed by starter on one of the courses that a golfer had broken a leg the week before but they can't afford to close the courses even if it means jeopardising player safety! This is another place that lives off it's history, much better places to go and play golf. The Vale Resort down the road is way better than Celtic Manor! DO not book here!

Came for a relaxing break away from life’s hustle and bustle…. Wow would have been better off staying home.. firstly The room 1078 tired and shabby no water only 1 robe and we waited and hour and 45 minutes for a second robe to go and use facilities.
Then at 4am the fire alarm everyone up in corridors until it went off then back into bed off again we had no sleep after this we watched the sun come up… the ladies changing rooms were closed so women were using the mens and men sent through the coffee shop in swim shorts it was a disaster from start to finish we are going home more knackered than we arrived ….. asked for a discount as met friends in the spa that had a discount as an apology but because we didn’t know their surname we were declined one…. Disgraceful place very upset.

80 pound Spa day

80 pound Spa day, but drinks and desserts cost extra - don't forget to put money in your robe pocket.

The locker didn't work, parking was full price if you stayed more than 3 hours. The decor was shabby.

I couldn't stay for my treatment on the day due to family commitments and although I was told I could change it, I had to pay more for it being on the weekend when we would be free. I was going to bring my family for a day of activities and spending, but not feeling the vibe to drive all the way there now.

Despite all this, the staff could not have been more helpful or more polite. It is not their fault.
