Disappointing and stressful, far from luxury
Would no longer consider Champneys as a "luxury" brand. Recently stayed at Tring and experienced multiple issues, across all aspects from facilities to service.
The food was poor even when ordering supplementary dishes, some staff boarderlined being aggressive. Outdoor Loungers /sitting where all taken even by 10.30am which is less than ideal on a very hot day. Facilities have seen better days and in need of a uplift, in particular bathrooms and communal showers. Rooms don't have a/c and were borderline unbearable to sleep in. Floor in the bathroom was so slippery to the point my guest had a serious accident. Both the fridge and phone didn't work in the room. The list really does go on.
I contacted Tring directly to try and resolve the issues, which made matters worse. I had to chase a response on numerous occasions to then be offer a "gesture of goodwill" which was a stay at a higher value then the one I was complaining about, quite frankly an insult all considering.
Such a shame.
Everything was beautiful
Everything was beautiful! The staff, food, facilities were great! The only thing I would say is the bathrooms needs to be upgraded as it was a bit run down! Considering how nice the facilities looked I was surprised the bathrooms were in this condition.
Feeling more like the Champneys we love
I've been coming to Champneys for many years and it hasn't always been consistent but our last visit we were super happy. You could see the whole place starting to feel more looked after and more like the Champneys we love.
I do want to mention two team members.
Firstly, Erin from the Spa. Friendly, efficient and gave me a fab pedicure. Thank you
Secondly, Mo in the restaurant. Being welcomed back by Mo always makes me smile and he runs a very efficient restaurant making sure everything runs smoothly! Thank you!

I haven't even arrived and tbe experience is awful. App doesn't work. Can't log into the website and phone just ringing out. My booking is wrong but no way to contact anyone to correct it.

Terrible service- booking system did not work and unable to get treatments .
Staff aware off issue - unable to resolve
Deputy manager very rude and expecting customer to know how their internal process work
Zero rating
Zero rating. Disgraceful. Aggressive male member of staff extremely rude to women. Tolerated and unchallenged by management. Steer clear.
Pure relaxation
I recently stayed at Forest Mere with my friend for the night and had the best stay. All staff were particularly attentive, especially Marius in reception. We felt well looked after the whole stay. The room was beautiful overlooking the lake. We did the moon ritual with Evelyn which was an experience I would love to repeat. Evelyn was so knowledgeable and made everyone feel welcome and included. The food was amazing. Zero complaints … and we couldn’t have been luckier with the weather. We will be back!
Bye Bye After 30 Years
This will be mine and my friend’s last visit to Champneys after over 30 years of annual visits. We were disgusted to be charged £8 for a bread roll with our evening meal, that the majority of the exercise classes are now chargeable but shorter in duration, with a reduced programme. The pool area was frequently without towels. The relaxation area (now upstairs) is inadequate in size, especially as the Spa is overrun with day guests paying only £39 for their visit. The rooms needed maintenance, the safe in each of our rooms did not open, nor did the phone in mine. Despite reporting this, our issues were not resolved. My bathroom sink had no plug and there were holes in the wall where a light had been moved, but not properly repaired. The whole experience is now very tired and not what it used to be. My friend and I enjoy different focus for our respective stays and Champneys always used to meet both our needs and expectations, but no longer. We will now be looking for an alternative Spa for our next trip.
Dirty and in need of a major overhaul
I felt that after one year as a member at Henlow Grange spa l must warn others of this way below par spa. I spent the year membership constantly complaining even to MD level which was ignored numerous times. I wrote letter after letter about serious health and safety concerns but NOTHING was done to rectify or improve the lists of things wrong. I believe these things should be reported to EHO!
The place is filthy with pool and hot tub areas with thick grime around water inlets - I even pointed this out to a senior manager called Adam who took pics on this phone but still nothing was done.
Strong smell of sewerage around pool area. Maintenance man walking into pool area with a plastic jug full of something in it and then pouring into pool whilst people swim past.
Beds and chairs around the pool area are filthy with njack and grease stains all over.
Missing tiles from hydro pool and drying room on seating areas which could cause injury.
Outdoor pool is often shut as they can’t get PH balances right.
The outdoor sunbed cushions are covered in black mould and unusable in my opinion.
Facilities in changing room are poor -
Often no towels
Lockers not working
Showers with no doors
Nasty smell in showers
Shampoo and shower gel containers often empty
Hairdryers broken or removed.
These facilities are not large enough for the number of day guests that are buying cheap spa days. Regularly no room to dry your hair.
Classes cancelled last minute.
The Food - don’t even go there. Low quality and not healthy. Worse than school dinners! All done on a budget!
Green mould and mildew all over walls and windows around pool and indoor hydro pool.
I could go on. My complaints were never resolved by Louise/Adam/Lucy,
Then when l cancelled my membership l get emails asking me why!
This spa needs a major facelift. Oh and the staff who are generally nice don’t stay long.
We attended Eastwell Manor for a spa…
We attended Eastwell Manor for a spa day. This is our third visit and have always been very pleased with it. However this visit was mostly disappointing. Firstly, we noticed there wasn’t enough space for everyone to sit inside if they wanted to, so there was a bit of a scramble from some people to get the beds around the pool. The jacuzzi wasn’t working, it was very cold. The other pools inside were colder than usual and the outdoor pool wasn’t really warm enough to sit in in a relaxing way. The steam room and sauna worked fine… thankfully.
The restaurant was quite disorganised at both breakfast and lunch. Took an abnormally long time to be seated, missing cutlery and was then told they’d run out of spoons to stir anything with. The food was very nice when it eventually came. The bill was wrong, and I was also given a bill that didn’t belong to me (I could see it wasn’t my name), when I said it wasn’t ours I was told the name was just spelt wrong. Disappointing they wouldn’t just accept I knew the name was wrong… but we got there in the end.
The massages were nice, but did feel like the staff didn’t really want to be there.
Overall, we still made the most of it and had a relaxing day but it feels like a lot of money to then find quite a bit of it not working properly. It’s unlikely we’ll go back which is a shame. Has definitely been better previously.
no response to complaint- again!
I have complained because of the impossible length of time to get through to make a booking and it not working. It went to the 'head' but they never got back to me. It is unbelievably badly managed.
Disgusting service (Booking confirmation no 7792397)
Disgusting service. I had booked a massage at the Mottram Hall Champneys spa. When I arrived, there was an argument going on at the desk between two customers and the lady behind the desk over a lost booking. It went on for twenty minutes during which time I continued to stand there waiting as my treatment time drew nearer. A kind lady from the gym was doing her best to get other members of spa staff to help me but they were rude and offhand to both me and her. I was asked to go into my treatment unchanged and as I was but then had a robe and a wristband thrust at me with no explanation as to what it was for or where the changing rooms were. I told her I was unsure where to go or what to do as I had never been before but there was just no clarity at all. I went to the changing room but could not get in even with the fob. I returned to reception and was told I’d be booked in but other customers continued to be served before me and at this point I’d had enough. A spa treatment is a very personal thing and I had lost all confidence in the experience by this time.
I explained that I was upset about the way I had been dealt with and that I wanted to cancel the treatment and go home. The kind lady who had tried to help supported my account of events but despite this, the supervisor who came to speak to me (and who just made a load of excuses) insisted that I would have to speak to the manager before they would give me a refund. Even though their own staff had seen everything that had happened.
I will not be speaking to their manager and they can keep the money. I refuse to beg and plead for a refund to someone who has, by extension, treated me like dirt. They can keep the money as it’s clearly more important to them than customer service.
Fabulous service at Barneys…
This afternoon our visit to Barneys golf bar at Champneys Mottram hall was made special by the service in particular from DEIGO who was working the bar service. deigo went over and above what was expected and in deed what is the usual in terms of drinks/ food service and trying to keep us cool after a very hot round of golf, he most definitely went an extra mile or two. Well done DEIGO, great to meet you today. Susan, Janice and Steve. 🙏👏👏
Miss communication booking a soundbath…
Miss communication booking a soundbath with me.
Then two gigs cancelled 3 days before one of the gigs!
Don’t pay cancellation fees !!!!
Just be careful if you’re self employed and they book you for events.
I’m very disappointed
What was once a place I loved is now somewhere I tell people to not book their events at.
Disappointing and Overpriced Experience
Disappointing and Overpriced Experience
I recently visited Champneys Spa expecting a premium experience, but unfortunately, it fell far short of what was promised — especially given the steep prices. I booked a massage that turned out to be incredibly underwhelming. It was little more than light, repetitive stroking — not remotely therapeutic or effective. The masseuse seemed completely disengaged and, frankly, unqualified.
For the amount they charge, the service should be exceptional, but what I received was subpar at best. There was no care, no technique, and no sense that I was getting the relaxation or professionalism one should expect from a luxury spa.
Overall, it felt like I paid top-tier prices for the kind of service you might expect from someone just starting out — uninterested, unskilled, and going through the motions. I would not return, and I wouldn’t recommend Champneys to anyone looking for genuine value or quality.
Seriously I would give zero stars if that were possible.
Henlow Champneys site
Henlow Champneys site. The outdoor spa is lovely and they have moved the gym over but the food was awful! We paid £150 each and it advertises a nutritious buffet but the food was dry. The fish was cheap and over cooked. Basic salad, not at all what I expected or believe I paid for. Completely under staffed so I guess that’s why it’s no longer table service. Cutting corners to save money. Very disappointing
Fawlty Towers would’ve been better
Fawlty Towers would’ve been better!
Very understaffed, no response from the phone lines, some staff are very rude and some clearly under pressure from being understaffed! Customers are not listened to, many items broken, especially in the spa and pool areas, decor is tired and needs updating, staff are dismissive and very rude when responding to queries. My total bill was overcharged and despite contacting them, this has still not been resolved, even though I was assured this would be resolved as a matter of importance!
This so-called premium spa brand is in my opinion a joke!
Unprofessional
Unprofessional , inexperienced staff and do not value customers.
Management just as poor
Worst customer service by phone/email
The grounds are dated, needs a good clean, showers falling apart, overpriced massage and appauling customer service. It took weeks to amend a booking.
This spa is no longer considered luxury
Find another spa who actually cares about it's guests and employees
As an former senior spa theapist, this place is without a doubt the most unprofessional and poorly managed company to work at ever. I often had to supply my own mitts, cotton wool, oil and tissues because they hadn't ordered any. Stained and frayed towels, poorly maintained and rundown treatment rooms, underpaid, overworked - guests have no idea how difficult it is to work as a therapist in this place. Pay is terrible, little more than minimum wage, no massage limits and management simply don't care. Often pay is messed up and wrong, takes months to correct it and if you're lucky you might get it back. I did 'win' an overnight stay which was nice, but the facilities are very tired and if you're unfortunate enough to get a room in the garden wing, you'll be extremely disappointed, it's awful - request the Mansion House if you can. The cafe is lovely and poor Louise is overworked and very much underpaid. Would I recommend people stay here? Absolutely not. Save your money and go to a spa which looks after it's therapists and staff, it's facilities and actually invests in the workplace, not simply ride on a reputation which is going nowhere.
