Worst purchase of my career

I am a filmmaker working on the industry for seven years and I can say with confidence that this product was the worst purchase in all my career.

My order was placed on February 2017, and it included the following:
- Light Cineflex L Bi-color
- Diffuser Dome Cineflex L
- Baby Stand 2.00m reversible legs
- Extension cable

Right after placing the order I got an email from the costumer support saying that the extension cable is no longer in stock (it showed available on the website). I got a little bit sad but that was ok, since I could work without that product. This was only the beginning of a nightmare that came after.

After more a less 2 months of using the led light, with no problems so far, two led stripes stopped working during one shoot. After contacting the customer support, they told me that I could solder the wires myself or I could send the unit back to repair, shipping costs paid be me, since they refused to pay them for a problem they cause. Since I needed the light to work and I didn’t want to pay extra, I kept the light.

After more a less 9 months the cable between the controller and the led panel started to get bad contact and 75% of the time, I needed to reconnect multiple times (in front of my clients) for it to work. The connections of the cable and the panel are made of plastic and feel cheap, as well as the panel itself. Every time I roll it to store it again on the included tube, I have the strange feeling that I will break some stripe or wire on the panel.

Now, after 2 years and 9 months the led completely shuts down (also during client work). Now, every time I try to connect the unit, a blue light keeps blinking on the controller constantly. The light never turned on again.

Right after this happened, I send an email to the costumer support and they reply the following: “It is difficult to say 100% the source of the problem without having the controller in our service department for my colleagues to do the checks and measurements but according to your description it may be the internal logic controller broken. If this is indeed the source then the solution is to replace the whole circuit board which in terms of costs (190 euro) is almost the price of a new controller (215 euro). Considering this our recommendation is to purchase a new controller.”.

After this email, I wrote a reply (a small and briefly text summarizing the whole experience since I purchase the item) and since then, they never responded to me again.

Besides the led panel I notice some problems with the rest of the products as well that I purchase from this company. The fabric of the diffuser dome started tearing apart very early, the light stand legs are becoming loose and the zippers of the carrying bag become stuck lots of times. The handles of the bag are unstitching from the rest of the bag as well.

With this review, It is not my intention to hurt the company or to do public justice for the way they treated me. This review is for serious filmmakers and professionals like me that want to have good equipment that will not let them down. For those I say clearly: stay away and do not trust this company or their service. It simply doesn't match with the name on the logo: profissional.

RESPONSE: Thanks (I guess) for the response. I am sorry to say but if even for a bad review you need almost one month to respond it clearly shows the importance you give to clients.
A cinema product called "professional" cannot experience problems within 9 months of light use (even tho it started much early). As by your words on your email replies "We suspect that there are some imperfect wiring connection". This is bad quality and products with this cannot be called professional.
Funny part is that you suggested me to open the unit and soldier the bad wires that you have built. Normal companies list that if you open yourself an unit the warranty is gone.
Next time, if you know that your product will stop work after 2 years of two led stripes with imperfect wiring connections you badly buily, just tell me, and I will pay the 29€ you suggested me to pay to send back the unit for warranty.
And no, normal companies pay all the costs if they admit the problems are cause by them.
I will maintain my opinion and I will not waste more time with this case.
Best,
Franc

Reply from Cinelight

Hi Franc,

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

We have checked your case and we would like to make some comments about:
- Your first report of a possible problem with the CineFLEX unit was made after 9 months.
- We have suggested you to make some quick checks to confirm the possible fault and recommended you to ship back the unit for our service department to repair or replace it under warranty
- Like most of the companies within this industry that ship internationally, our company supports the returning shipping cost.
- You have not returned the CineFLEX unit to us for addressing the reported problem and continued to use it for another two years until the logic controller might have failed due to the first problem leaved unsolved.
- The standard manufacturer warranty is 1 year for products sold to professionals and your request for a free replacement could not be honored after 2 years and 9 months.

We apologize for the bad experience you claim you had and it may not have come to this if our recommendation had been followed in the first place.

CINEFLEX and SKYHUE

Ordered a kit of CineFLEX "XL" along with a new SKYHUE "S" and I have to say I'm impressed by these two lights.
The SKYHUE has a very punchy output and the colors are rendered perfect on my Ursa Mini 4K camera. The SKYHUE it is built like a tank and sure it whit-last years of use. RGB and effects modes opens a lot of new possibilities in terms of lighting design and special effects. Used on my last project to mimic a thunderstorm lighting inside a kitchen and also flashing's of a police care passing by.

Ordering from cinelight.com was smooth and delivered this time on time by DPD.

LED light

I have already bought in the past cinelight products and have always been satisfied with the remarkable value for money. I bought fresnel tungsten, fluorescent lights and led lights. For market value the quality is definitely good !!
Surely in the future I will make new purchases. Also good with the sales department.

A great and reliable shop

Not much to say other than a by the book purchase experience! That may sound a bit underwhelming but given my latest experiences with other suppliers it's more than I thought I could ask for.

I'm putting together a second studio and need to work with a tight budget, so I ordered a Fresnel 650W & 1000W to run some tests. A wide variety of purchasing options (Paypal always a preferred choice here), transport in 4 days through DPD, and surprisingly responsive customer support and things were off to a good start. Ultimately any concerns I had were blown away when I compared the light output to some other variations I got off eBay, a huge difference of over 40% on the meter.

Great prices, great products, great supports. These guys are definitely worth recommending. Cheers!

One of the worst customer service and …

One of the worst customer service and company policies experience I had as a professional. On a factory defective product, they made me pay the shipping all the way back to Romania, cost me more than 100$, asking me to declare 10$ of value on 1000$ light kit putting at risk my goods. On the return, once fixed, they declared 4 Euros (without my approval) and the package got lost by DHL. Now they are brushing me off with the possibility of getting 4 Euros back on a package of 1000$. I'm stuck without my light kit having lost around 1000$ and a lot of time trying to make them admit the risk they made me take with them.

One of the Best Purchase Experiences

We are currently in the midst of setting up a small production company (Printhouse Films, based in Graz Austria) and due to our slightly limited "startup" budget, we needed to make smart decisions with regards to kit. As the film lights from companies like Arri were out of our price range, we first considered getting super cheap, no-name knock-off lamps from unknown companies in China but were quickly scared off by some of the terrifying reviews left by others (burning lights, non-functioning parts, less than safe wiring of the lamps, etc.)

By chance we came across CineLight, that seemed to offer a nice middle-ground between the very expensive big brand products and the no-name, very cheap (both in price and in production value) products.

In retrospect, after having purchased ca. €1000 worth of kit, I can say I could not be happier and that the entire buying experience was one of the best I have ever been involved in.

CineLight was extremely professional when it came to paying, offering an array of different methods. We ended up paying via Credit Card with PayPal, which is my preferred method as it's a safe and trusted way of paying. The receipt in the exact formatting with all the info you could ever wish for came promptly (this, as I have come to find, should not be taken for granted, all too often have companies just not included a proper receipt until approached) and what came even more promptly was the kit itself! We chose the cheapest shipping option and still, the kit arrived (very professionally and safely packed!) around 24h later! - Granted, our HQ are based in southern Austria, and seeing that the kit came from Romania, it wasn't as far as it might be to other companies / countries.

What I also extremely valued about CineLight, was their responsiveness. There were several times that I needed to contact a member of their team and each time I got a response within 12h, fully addressing my issue in a polite and cohesive way.

To the quality of the kit itself: I am a trained cinematographer that just completed his BA in cinematography in London. Of course due to this, I have had extensive experience working with several forms of lighting kit over the past years, usually as a gaffer (in training). The lights themselves, whereas they might not feel *quite* as robust as their more expensive cousins from Arri, definitely are at a quality which I will gladly use and feel safe with. The mechanisms worked fine, the stands supplied had a nice weight to them and didn't at all feel flimsy or "plasticy" as feared at first and also the wiring inside the light is up to par! - This last point was especially an important aspect for me, nothing goes over technical safety on set.

Also the other parts that I purchased such as the dimmers, all had a satisfactory level of quality and felt robust, meaning I feel safe using them. (Unlike other companies that sell kit that may be cheaper but has a more than questionable quality especially when it comes to the safety of things.)

Of course, as was to be expected when it comes to this price range, there were certain parts that were plastic (where, if I'm not mistaken, Arri might have had a metal piece instead) or other aspects where I felt like the material itself could have been possibly ever so slightly "better", but then again, those were really only details. In other words: These lights are really only details away from being full fledged Arri lights. (Excuse the the constant comparison to Arri, they were the lights I was trained on and oftentimes industry standard, so I can best compare to those.)

One thing for potential customers: Don't be scared off if the lights begin to smoke a bit or give off a burning odour at first, this is completely normal for many types of film lights (especially Fresnel lights, as I've heard) and is only the excess dust, oil, etc. being burned off / evaporating. If you let the lights air a couple times (putting them outside and switching them on) for an hour, you'll find that the smell will quickly become less and eventually become so minute you won't notice it or even disappear completely. I do highly recommend doing this though before you get onto set for the first time, you don't want to suddenly have smoking and/or smelling lights on set.

I will definitely consider purchasing kit from CineLight again in the future. Their quality to price ratio is really good and I am very satisfied with their kit. 5 stars for what they are!
