Aborted Merger Between Gîtes de France and Clévacances: A Missed Opportunity or a Wise Decision?
As a regular user of rural tourism platforms, I followed with interest the proposed merger between Gîtes deacances, announced in 2018. The idea of uniting two major French labels in homestay tourism seemed promising: pooling resources, gaining visibility against industry giants, and simplifying the experience for travelers.
Yet, the merger never materialized. And in hindsight, it raises some legitimate questions.
🤝 An Ambitious but Complex Project
The initial goal was to create a joint platform bringing together nearly 100,000 certified accommodations. Gîtes de France was to be the majority shareholder, with shared governance. But differences in culture, operations, and strategic vision made the process difficult.
Clévacances, more agile and better rated by users (especially on Trustpilot), appeared to manage customer relations and interface usability more effectively. Gîtes de France, despite its long-standing presence and extensive network, faced recurring criticism regarding customer service and digital transformation.
⚖️ A Separation That Preserves Identity
Ultimately, not merging allowed each entity to retain its unique identity. Clévacances continued to develop a more coherent user experience, while Gîtes de France pursued its internal modernization efforts.
This decision, though disappointing to some, seems to have avoided a dilution of values and added operational complexity.
💬 Personal Conclusion
As a traveler, I remain attentive to the quality of hospitality, transparency of information, and ease of booking. Had the merger improved these aspects, it would have been welcome. But in the current state, I understand that preserving the diversity of offerings and approaches can also be beneficial.
