Get signed lease/keys before ending current leaseil you have keys in hand
If you're trying to get into a new Dominium community that is under construction you may have a very difficult time talking to a human, unless you live in the area and can physically go to wherever their temporary office is located. Once you get in touch with someone they are very helpful. I would not give up your current housing based on their expected move-in date. I would expect construction/move-in delays and not give up your current housing until you have a signed lease and keys in hand. My move-in was delayed six months and by the time the apartment was ready I could no longer afford the out-of-state move, having paid almost $5,000 in premiums for a month-to-month lease on top of base rent for my existing apartment. I am still recovering financially. Since the apartments were under construction, you can only make your decision of whether to move there based on the descriptions and photos on the community website. The initial photos they show on their website may be different than what the actual finishes look like when the apartments are complete. They state that on their website. Believe them. The photos on their website look incredibly life-like, but the pictures they posted when the apartments where I was planning on moving were complete showed different quality finishes.
If your lease is ending and you want to move into a new construction property, whether it be a Dominium property or another one, I suggest you weigh the cost of a.) ending your lease and potentially having to stay in a hotel until the apartment is ready, b.) going month-to-month and paying that premium, or c.) paying the fee to break your lease when the apartment is ready. (In the end, for me, it would have been less expensive to pay the fee to break the lease.) Another possibility is staying with family or friends until the apartment is ready, but you may wear out your welcome if there are significant delays.
