We have been feeding essential dry food…
We have been feeding essential dry food for several years now. We feed 50% essential and 50% butternut box.
Our 4 year old Border Collie is thriving. We get lots of comments on his overall condition and shiny coat.
We tend to order direct from the website and love that we get a free bag of treats with our order.
I will be visiting the stand at crufts next week and hoping to buy a few tins of the pate to try.

I have used essential dog food for over two years now. The dogs love it. The Web site is easy to navigate around now I've got use to it. The only problem I did have was when the prices went up and I clicked on re-order it would not let me ,without me looking through the foods again. Would have been nice to have been informed. Everything goes up so I believe people will understand and I would not then experienced the confusion when reordering.

Healthy dog food , and value for money.
When we collected our current wire-haired Vizsla as a 12 week old pup, he had been fed Essentials by his dedicated gamekeeper breeder here in Scotland. So we continued him on the puppy meal, thinking that we’d make a change to another more economical brand when he was a little older. But we never did change!
The helpful feeding guidance included the fact that if his poo was a little less than firm then we should cut back a little on the recommended quantity for weight and age. We took that advice to help work out the right quantity for Buddy, enough but not too much, and so the cost per meal reduced slightly.
Given that we now have a very lively, bright, keen young dog of 2 years of age, who is quick to learn, sleeps well, can run like the wind after deer, hare and pheasant, and enjoys good health, I’m so glad we’ve stuck with Essentials. He’s a happy dog, so I’m a happy owner.
We have a limited budget and so we do of course occasionally review expenditures across the board. I recently contacted the company, after a price increase , and was helpfully directed to a slightly cheaper product in their range, still a very good quality product. The person I spoke with could not have been more helpful.
I especially love that the ingredients are named and recognisable, that percentages of ingredients are given, and that the meal pellets are not fatty!
I have added reviews on Trust Pilot for a few other experiences and services when service has, in my view, been exceptionally good. But I haven’t ever read the guidance on writing a useful review; this is my honest view of Essentials dog food and the words are all my own!

My Labrador loves all their formulas
My Labrador retriever has been on their foods since we got him at 8 weeks old, from the working dog puppy large breed up to the adult formulas. He has tried several flavours, all are devoured without a pause! His gut health seems well balanced with no faecal issues throughout. The only additional foods he gets are a few bonios or treats and 10ml Flax oil.
The little freebie extras which Essential Foods send with each delivery are his training treats - soft and meaty and ideal. He has buffalo horn to chew for his teeth and gum health.
I thoroughly recommend Essential Foods.

The product is superb
The product is superb, but the delivery company is dire. Our first order was not delivered to the property although we were in. It was dropped off at a local collection point which is in a small supermarket on the main road with no parking. It meant 2 eighty year olds struggling to carry a heavy box, We like the product so on our next order had it delivered to our son, Not ideal because he then has to take time out to bring it to us.

High quality ingredients which my Lab loves
I have been feeding my beloved lab essential food products since she was a puppy. Back then essentials was offering limited products, their range has grown organically and thoughtfully. The products are high quality and I have not had a reason to switch away and I haven’t. My Jan loves the dried food the variety is great as well rotate through them and can I say the tinned food is so good also. When you open the can it really does not smell like dog food. We order directly from the site and we have never had an issue with deliveries. The communication around the order and delivery is good. The treats are varied and really great. My lab loves them all. It’s a nice touch that we get given a treat with the order and also a sample of any new product that is coming out. It all is much appreciated. The claim about weight management holds true. Labs are notorious for putting on weight easily but we have maintained our labs weight really well, and she loves her food. Her coat is glossy and gleaming and she is as excitable as she was when she was a puppy. They aren’t the cheapest but you get what you pay for and you really do get good quality ingredients across the board here. We do not hesitate in recommending Essentials and as long as the attention to quality stays then we will continue to purchase.

The best kibble in the UK
Our 20kg mixed breed (Labrador Retriever X Belgian Malinois) thrives on the Highland Living mix. We choose the Working dog variant.
After a few months on this food my dog has amazing energy levels, great digestion with firm stools, and a very soft coat. Minimal shedding, fresh breath and always eager to learn.
If you have an active dog or a hard keeper, I definitely recommend trying this brand.
The kibble biscuits are slightly larger in size, which is great for a medium / large dog. It's not too greasy, there are no crumbs in the bag, and the kibble smells pleasant without having a strong odour. I love that the bags are easy to reseal.
Essential customer service is also brilliant. Delivery is fast and with dpd in my area, with easy collection options available. We tried the Estate living and it didn't suit my dog, after a quick email they dispatched Highland living at no extra cost and suggested to donate the bag of Estate living. So kind and much appreciated.
I haven't tried the Nautical living yet, but plan to order some soon.
My dog always struggled to put on weight as a puppy and teenager. Because of this, I've tried many other kibble brands, and even some 'premium' options didn't help my dog to keep condition. He always looked skinny. Since moving to Essentials, he has also gained at least 3kg and continues to put on muscle.
I am looking forward to seeing my dog thrive on this food for hopefully many years to come.

Kidney Issues Possibly Linked to High Protein Content
I have two active mixed-breed dogs, which I fed with Essential food for approximately four years. Everything seemed fine, they ate the food eagerly, but it eventually turned out that one dog had elevated blood creatinine, and the other had creatinine at the upper limit. Veterinarians and I suspect that these kidney problems were caused by excessive protein intake from this food. The values normalized when I switched to a different brand. I thought it was important to share this experience, considering that it was confirmed in both dogs.

First I want to say I am very sorry to hear both your dogs have experienced heightened creatinine levels, but I am glad to hear a different diet helped bring them back down.
It is important to note that this health issue amongst dogs is not caused by the protein content in a food, nor by a specific brand of dog food.
Extensive scientific studies have been made regarding this exact issue, taking a very close look into how protein affects the kidneys when fed in high quantities. The results of these studies were that if the dog is healthy then the kidneys are not affected by recipes with a high protein content, whereas if the dog is predisposed to kidney disease or have an existing kidney disease then it can affect the creatinine levels.
When we guide our customers in terms of which foods they wish to feed their dogs, we always recommend consulting with a veterinarian if the dog has any existing illness that needs to be kept in mind. Our foods are designed for healthy dogs and we will always refer our customers to their vet if there are pre-existing diagnosis. Naturally, we cannot know if there are any conditions the dogs are predisposed to, but then it is important to do as you did and react to help your dogs.
In conclusion, it is an issue that becomes apparent when a dog predisposed to this issue gets fed food with a higher protein content that what is optimal for that dog - the food does not cause the health issue in the dog
I hope that the new food keeps them in balance and that my reply to you helped shed a bit of light as to what may be the cause to this unfortunate experience.

This is genuinely an excellent, ethically sourced, clean & healthy top quality food!
I've been feeding both my labs Essential since they were pups, they started off with the Beginning for large breeds and I can honestly say they have both had zero problems with any stomach, teeth or toileting issues since then.
They're both now on adult food, I'm not a fan of feeding dogs kibble by any means, but this seems on the moister side of dry and since they're both doing so well on it I've kept them on it, and Essential make a tinned food now as well in the same flavours which has exactly the same high quality ingredients so they are on a mix of both - all the flavours go down well except one of my dogs didn't seem very keen on the salmon/trout Nautical one, otherwise their bowls are empty in about 3 seconds flat!
I did contact customer services to ask if they wanted me to return the Nautical bag as I only intended to use it the once, but they were very understanding and suggested I either keep it for the other dog or donate it to a rescue (which I did), and he sent me an alternative flavour bag instead without charge, amazing!!
I also buy all the treats & chews from Essential too as they don't have additives & other nasties either, and there is always a discount for large orders, which mine always seem to be!
Quick mention about the staff and the website too, there's a feeding & training advice section which is actually really useful, and any questions sent from there are answered within a day. I can't not include the customer service here because it's so different from 99% of other companies who need you to listen to 18 options on a recorded message then use your keypad to reach the infinite knowledge of a bot - bad times, and personally speaking the old skool quality of customer care is another of the reasons I've stayed loyal to Essential for a number of years and fully intend to continue.
The vet is really pleased with both dogs; coats are clean and shiny, teeth spotless and gleaming white (especially since both dogs are black!) and both fit and lean so I'm happy to recommend without hesitation.

Best food for my girls
My choccy lab came to us on Royal Canin - I knew it was not the best food but she always had sloppy poops so I had to find an affordable alternative. We found Essentials in December 2019 and have not looked back. We weaned her litter of 9 pups on it and they all continue to thrive on it as does our girl. It is great food and the treat bag with each order is lovely.
