I’m going to be honest here. I can see why so many have rated it as poor.

They say the new management team changed it to update it, they had to make it work with the new world today but I’ve been a member for a while on a website that hasn’t changed it’s site for years and works perfectly fine, they have updated it sure, but the site still runs as smoothly as it did many years ago.

Gaydar have changed it all and now looks like a mirror image of Grindr. Clearly it’s just in competition with others and wants to make money. Sure who doesn’t. But at what cost. It’s all change for the young and I can see it’s now run by the young because the older owners have sold out and moved on.

I can’t even create an account now because time and time again I’ve had to use a different email because the previous one hasn’t been deleted upon my termination of my account. So years later I come back to rejoin only to find the email address hasn’t been terminated, just the access. I do a password reset only to be met by “the account no longer exists”. So the endless loop of all 3 emails I use has meant I cannot make another account. But having read the rest of the reviews it’s obvious to just avoid at all costs. And quite right too.

Change your ways gaydar or you’ll be changing your jobs.

Due tot the reply, what security is needed to block every deleted email address used to create an account???? Maybe you should leave the security to the decision of your members like blocking or reporting like another website whose name I shall not give out, cough, Caffmos. Oops. Yeah it’s a much better site than gaydar is now. It’s how gaydar used to be and runs far better and much cheaper.

I could not agree more with the previous reviewer and I too have deleted my account but please do not take my word for it. Sign up as a guest and if you use the chat rooms, just watch how ignorant, rude and entitled specific people are while others are muted without justification.

Without doubt, the previous positive review will have been written as stated as a "counterpoint" by one of the few people left on the site. I believe the small stagnant pond size membership now is such that it amounts to nothing more than the play thing for rude and self deprecating people who believe that their conduct is appropriate. This behaviour borders on sociopathic and Gaydar support (who now is one person who clearly socialises online with these people) only encourages this all the more. The ridiculous assertion made that people are muted because they "don't stick with instructions" is demonstrably untrue, it can be shown over and over again not to be true.

In reality the fact that this once excellent site is now no more than a few (around a dozen) ever so brave keyboard warriors speaks for itself. But like I said, do not take my word for it; go on an see for yourself. Shameful.

Its a shame to see the end of Gaydar,but apart from any other comments I could write here about the state of the site, I will simply say there is just no one on the site anymore,so pointless logging on ,so with thousands of others I have deleted my account.

A couple of weeks ago, I was muted on this site. I had only said "Hi" and was given no explanation for this. Having read the previous review, I think this reviewer raises some serious questions and a great deal about the person running this site. The arrogance and ignorance of the person responding is only a testament as to why this website is a mere puddle of its former oceanic self. I must wholeheartedly agree with what the previous reviewer has written about gaydar. There is no way that I would pay for this low grade website which from what I have seen seems to allow some people to be defamatory, rude and bullying whilst attempting to silence others to the point of not being able to say "hi" or simply chat in a pleasant and NICE way. I don't believe this is a viable business option nor in the spirit of online communication. Clearly there seems to be an issue with the site's moderation/moderator only to its detriment. Be warned, do not whatever you, do not waste valuable money on this nonsense.

I barely spoke in their general chat room and was muted. Below is the conversation I took part in. I've kept a copy of the whole conversation for trustpilot to review themselves. I won't be using this again. 1984 on steroids. :(

I was a regular user of gaydar, and had been since the early 2000s, but then they changed it to a pale imitation of Grindr and with that it lost all the features that made it an asset to the gay community. Now it's just 'dial a shag.' I haven't used it since they changed it

Dreadful lack of response to a support request-fault log. If their technical support section were a commercial IT support company they would get the sack. Logged on on a Friday morning to find my message section didn't work so sent a support request at around 8am. Never heard back and it still hadn't been fixed by 3pm that day so sent another support request-fault log and followed up with an email to gaydar's support email address. It's now around 24 hrs later and Saturday morning and it still hasn't been fixed and I was supposed to be arranging a date for today, Saturday.

Totally disagree with most other reviews. Gaydar.net is a reliable and legit dating site. No doubt about it. IMO sites like Gaydar.net (but also GaySingle.net) are the only real alternative to Grindr. Didn't find what I was looking for so far but in general no complain. Works really good.

I was muted several times and not had any explanation. On the final occasion before account suspension, Customer support sent this:
"The muting was done by one of our automatic "bots" that monitors the amount and frequency of messages from users to intervene against possible spam messages and/or flooding. Your profile had created 9 messages within 8 minutes, if my count is correct." The suggestion was that the muting was automated. The support team then sent quite rudely sent:
"NO FURTHER COMMUNICATION WILL BE ENTERED IN TO regarding this matter which is now closed." I replied exposing the inaccuracy of this. Two other users within the same hour had in fact typed over double the amount that I had typed (in both characters and words) in around half the time I had. So as far as I am concerned, they are liars. On no occasion was anything that I wrote a breach of their terms and conditions. I have kept a copy of all this information for the purpose of this review and to validate the accuracy of it. It is no wonder people have left this site in the their droves. The platform is fine, the management and "support" clearly is not.

The arrogance of the 'new' Gaydar Team beggars belief. In an uncalled for make-over they obliterated my reason for using it. They deleted all my 'Friends and Favourites', all my 'Notes' and the life that I formally lived on the site. Gone are all the friends I made from all around the world and our daily chats and deleted my means of contacting them.
Unfortunately Gaydar has turned into a cheap imitation of Grindr. In my mind the two were quite separate, Gaydar being the superior, international gay line, and Grindr the simple pick-up site. Gaydar gave information to its members like, favourite film, favourite country, actor, film, food etc - It was like a matching site, and great fun.
The only way to get members back is by reinstating the old site and for the 'Team' to appreciate why former members loved it so much. The demise of this site really is an incomprehensible tragedy.

They had a perfectly usable and enjoyable website, then all of a sudden they decided to radically change it, destroying vast amounts of user data, removing functionalities, breaking the ones which remained, and making it unusable from an interface point of view too.

On top of that, the whole business model was erased: from being a website which made it easy to find hookups, it became a generic "gay dating" site without any direction. They even tried to actively discourage sex by removing themed rooms in the chat. Eventually some of those rooms were recreated, but the whole experience has been extremely sanitised. The few functionalities that are still present now work, which is hardly a unique selling point.

It seems the equivalent of a swingers' club stopping people from having sex, but expecting its client to go there anyway because they still serve orange juice.
Membership fees of people who had recently joined, unaware of the imminent self destruction were not returned.
They kept on asking what people wanted, only to ignore the immense majority telling them to bring the old website back - so they can't even pretend they didn't know what was going on.

The number of users has collapsed, so it's quite pointless to join now.

Website: I am not sure how they managed to break page elements which have been working flawlessly since browsers were invented: scroll bars, appear and disappear for no reason, scrolling down page using space bar works intermittently, update password in browser doesn't work either and once you changed it, it has to be typed in manually forever.
I honestly wouldn't know where to start to interfere with a browser functionality to break it, so in a way it can be considered an achievement?

Android app is shockingly bad, as its consistently low score in google's app store confirms. The average is still somehow acceptable because of the many ratings before the website's self destruction in 2017 - and a greatly reduced number of download means fewer people rate it down.

I downloaded it out of curiosity, and uninstalled it after seeing that every profile had a picture count of 1 ( 1 / 1 ), only to show more pics and the correct profile picture count ( 1 / x ) after swiping down. Shocking.

The website and android app ( from the apple app store rating I can assume the iOS app too ) should be open sourced and used to teach junior coders how not to do things, and fixing them to a usable degree could be a good exercise for students.

Not worth paying for. Site always goes down. Too many people are rude and ignorant. Supposed to be to chat but its too unpleasant. I won't be paying for membership. When doing some research I discovered the company that owns Gaydar company applied to be struck off from companies house so its obvious where that's going
Shame...good in theory, rubbish in practise.

A couple of years I go, I left Gaydar appalled at the way I had experienced a group of cyberbully, keyboard warriors who were being protected by a moderator on the site’s Manchester room. I felt at the time that until the “Support” team really got to grips with the collusive, tag team bullying, I wanted no part this dreadful site. Since then, it would seem that the site has been revamped. I would like to share with everyone, my experience over the past week or so.

To be as brief as I can, nothing has changed or so since I last joined other than the size of Gaydar which seems to have shrunk to the size of a puddle which now is overrun with internet “trolls”.

There are at least half a dozen people who regularly misuse the Manchester room. I am more than happy to be ignored when speaking in a chat room. However, individuals would actively make rude obnoxious remarks and would object to others chatting in what they would call “their room”. This immature behaviour is the stuff of playgrounds yet it is the action of supposed adults. To compound the issue, the Manchester room is moderated by an individual who both socialises and in turn then colludes with these people whose behaviours are in clear breach of Gaydar’s terms and conditions. I have in the last week taken scripts from the site in order to qualify all the remarks I am making in this review.

I believe that the moderator of the Manchester room and in turn the ineffective action by the “Support” team to be the reason many people have left and stay away from gaydar.net. Many guys have commented as such to me recently.

My desire is not to exact any type of revenge with my report, but I do feel strongly that I should add this review based on my experience. It is a shame that what ought to be a positive, friendly, adult experience is unfortunately nothing more than a playground for clearly inappropriate behaviour which in turn is ignored or endorsed by the inaction of the sites moderation process. It is worse than the lawless wild west in that sense and I would suggest that anyone wishing to avoid detriment to their mental well being would avoid this website like the plague. Time has proven that the leopard simply cannot or will not change its spots.

10/3/19 Further to my review, I have just been muted in the Manchester room for the fifth time in three weeks today. On none of the five occasions have the support team (despite repeated requests for an explanation) explained the reason. Today this occurred within an hour of another member using racially pejorative language about Japanese people. I reported this to the support team only to find myself muted from the Manchester chat room. This is further evidence of my assertion that the site has a significant problem with its moderation of this room and is as I stated in my title a site which is encouraging inappropriate online behaviour. Whilst it continues to capitulate to this biased moderation, people will use their common sense and steer clear.

UPDATE 13/3/19

After being muted a seventh time and seven failures to specify how I breached any of their Terms and Conditions, the support team sent me the following email:

Hello,

Your profile has been suspended.

Having received and read/replied to numerous emails from you, the Management Team are fully supportive and aware of this decision.

Our decision is final.

All gaydar.net have done is simply demonstrated that they allow members to conduct themselves in bullying, racism and other potentially criminal behaviour while suspending the profile of a person such as myself who has not breached any term of condition rather has sought specific if simple explanation of what occurred to mute me in the first place. Given companies have audit trails of their server activity, I am certain that the support team could have copied and pasted the supposed infringements of T&C's in order to refute my assertion that they are encouraging trolling and cyberbullying.

Anyone reading this review simply a choice, try it out, see the conduct of the members (particularly in the Manchester) and decide for yourself whether this review is accurate or not. I have kept detailed records of my experience with this company for my safeguarding and as a matter of public interest.

MY SUMMARY ADVICE: SIMPLY AVOID

Oh dear. What has happened to this site?

I re-joined this site two days ago, after a few years. I am completely shocked by how horrendously useless it has become.

I have now deleted my profile. There are FAR superior sites to this mess!

The app for iPhone consistently fails. Every couple of months I have to jump through hoops to get my password working again. This time it will not reset after five tries - each time it will not accept my reset. So I tried entering the wrong password over an hundred times to see what would happen - nothing! No email from them to express any concern,made me realise that a hacker has unlimited attempts to access my account!

From market leader to major embarassment. For years they were at the forefront, then someone had the great idea of turning the site into an app. And now, nothing works. You get locked out of your account, messages dont send or send and take weeks to arrive. There's so few users now you can almost hear the tumbleweed blowing through the place. The old site was a little tired looking but very busy. The non-functioning app has had to be sanitised to meet the requirements of the Apple store and google play. There's very little on offer for free, and what there is barely works with messages failing to send, being locked out of your account, "winks"arriving weeks after being sent, by which time whomever sent it has long deleted. They also the removed the "last seen" data, probably in an attempt to hide the fact that people just werent logging in any more. The result is that you end up sending messages to long-dead, unused profiles. Hardly an incentive to pay ( extortionate ) membership fees. Over 1000,000 downloads it says on the play store. But that includes downloads of the old app that worked quite well alongside the old website. This "one size fits all" app is a joke.

Gaydar has gone from being the number one gay hookup site to a third-rate irrelevance since its 'relaunch' a couple of years ago. What basically seems to have happened is that they belatedly realised the future is in mobile apps, so they built a copy of Grindr or Scruff, only with less functionality and five years too late. Worse still, they harmonised the desktop site with the mobile one, so that the emasculated and sanitised profiles which Apple and Google insist on in order to allow these apps in their app stores are now reproduced on the web version. It's a very pale shadow of its former self and is almost certainly destined to die now. They don't even seem to be able to attract advertising revenue: every now and then a pop-up appears saying 'This is an interstitial advertisement' in place of an actual ad. Sad.
